Evolution Rage 5-S Table Saw - Installing a Soft Start Module.
In this video I will be upgrading my Evolution Rage 5S table saw with a soft start module. Those that got this saw will know how it kicks off when started. I wanted to improve my experience with this saw and extend the life of the motor of this saw by installing a soft start module.

It might be wise to have the soft start module outside of the housing - it's aluminium case acts as a heat sink. I'm thinking about mounting it on the outside of the housing on short stand-offs. Protect the leads with heat shrink.

Hi Tomasz, I’ve just ordered a module using your link to Amazon UK. This is just what I believe is needed. I’ve been concerned about the extremely sudden start with this saw and worried it could lead to damage or failure. Many thanks indeed for your video which has brought relief at last. Well done.
@CasualDIY

Thank you very much. I think that the way the machine it is the slow start module should extend the life of the motor. Less stress on the motor when starting up. 👍
@ianmathieson65
@ianmathieson65 2 года назад
@@CasualDIY And less risk of damage to the flats on the shaft and the bosses which prevent the blade from spinning on the shaft - something I’ve been concerned about. In spite of tightening the nut as much as possible I’ve had clear evidence of the blade slipping which I suspect was in starting the saw. Clear signs of metal galling and tearing on the faces of the bosses which I’ve then had to file flat again.
@CasualDIY

@@ianmathieson65 hmm that does sound quite bad and potentially is caused by the rough start of the machine. I'm curious if the soft start module will solve that problem for you.

Hi Tomasz, great tip! Unfortunately your link didn't work for me, (it was 3 months after posting) however, I managed to source it elsewhere 😁 Why oh why is it not fitted with one! My issue is I've only got 20 Amps in garage, and if I have my Bosch GAS 20L extractor running, and other things, my supply trips; so far all OK. Thanks again for your great tips and upgrades. I've also added the large safety flap on on/off switch. 😊

@@CasualDIY so that's zero clearance plate and now soft start. If you could just have a crack at the blade guard / dust collection to stop it spraying dust everywhere, you'll have fix the three main flaws with the saw ;) 👍👍
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 2 года назад
Hehe seems that way. I was recently looking into the blade guard as I bought myself a 3d printer like a year ago. And was thinking about printing one. But so far I'm to dumb to do it lol but I'll get there. With the dust it's mainly spraying from the bottom and now I'm thinking of building a bench and just mount it to the bench that will act as an outfeed table. So I would try to tackle the dust extraction at that point.

Hi Tomasz! I hope your ears where burning this afternoon! Getting all the wiring back in the box had me cursing you ;) But I have to say... what a great mod. While I had it upside down, I added some very thin flexible plastic sheet (0.5mm) & Gorilla Tape along the side and back of the dust shroud. It's isn't "airtight" as it has to move through 45Deg but WOW! Such an improvement... Two excellent mods in one day :D Keep up the good work

Hehe glad it worked out for you in the end 😂 I'm planning to ditch the stand from my saw and mount it to a bench, when the prices of plywood go down that is 😂 so I will try to tackle the dust issue then

There is never enough safety to be honest. I don't want my workshop and house to burn down and I'm not all knowing. Good tips and feedback are always welcomed here for my own sake and for benefit of others. Now, everyone has got a brain and responsibility to look after themselves and make safety amendments as they deem fit. Some of the tips and feedback are worth while others may be over the top and maybe they are required in a full on factory but not necessary in a small workshop. Its a vide topic to cover really and everyone got their opinion on it. But yes I don't think we need to go over the board with it. All the best mate.

Hi Tomasz, do you know how to fit one of these to a mitre saw? The wiring on my AEG mitre saw is a bit different, so I've not been able to work out how to do it.
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY 2 года назад
The easiest way to do it is to get access to the on/off switch, locate which wires that are attached to the switch are coming from the motor of the saw. We only need those wires. And then make sure to locate which wire is live and neutral. And then you connect as I show in the video. Although it all depends which slow start module you got as it may be bit different

You should have a technical sheet or some drawings on the module so just try to follow those
@davechooi4566
@davechooi4566 6 месяцев назад
I cannot understand wiring diagrams at all. However, ignoring wire colours but connecting my module according to wire locations, (where you have a blue wire, I have a red, where you have a red next to the black, I have a blue), it now works. In other words, where you connected the red onto the switch, I connected blue instead. My red was then connected to the blue on the switch. Black was connected as you indicated. Hope I described it OK.

I want to use this on a power amplifier if it will function as a generic soft-start. To confirm the wiring: Red to LIVE/ACTIVE Black to LOAD (Active from load) Blue to Neutral -> when you push your power button I presume Neutral connects and now goes to the soft start and the motor together (a Y split)?

.... How hot does that soft start get? Tbh seems really tiny for something supposed to handle 8A @240v or 15A @120v. The soft starts I've installed for other equipment were always much larger for that amperage. Especially when the motors working hard. But I might be wrong.
@CasualDIY

The one I got is up to 250v and max 16A. So far had no issues with it. But time will tell.

@@CasualDIY Glad to hear you're being safe! It would be nice to hear how this has faired after 6 months or a year. There is a peak ampacity number they might not have published, where it can survive a peak current of say 45A or 80A for 500ms or 80ms. The same with inductive voltage spikes. As well if it's chinese they may or may not have lied about the ratings. There's more than enough tear downs of Chinese knockoffs demonstrating that. I don't want to be negative, you followed good practices. Hopefully it works out great for you. If you do end up with any concerns put it in another sealed metal electrical box so it doesn't wreck anything like the switch or the existing box.

Hi Thomaz, the blue and brown wires from my motor to the switch are on opposite sides to yours. Is it ok therefore to wire it by just copying your wiring eg. Red from soft start module to where brown was, blue to blue and black to brown regardless of the sides the original wires are on? Might sound confusing but I don’t want to go ahead with it before clarification in case I do damage. I don’t see a way to attach a picture to the comment
@CasualDIY
@CasualDIY Год назад
Not sure what you mean that they are on opposite sides? Are they attached differently to what I show on the video. If so they are wired in incorrectly? You need to establish which wire is brining the electricity, which one is neutral etc.

Hmm, see the way you "crimped" the connector onto the pre soldered wires with a pair of pliers, I'd rather have don't that to the bare wires then lightly soldered the whole thing. I'd also get a cheap crimping tool, done right it's a solid connection but you really need to form the crimp down in one go.
@CasualDIY

Thanks for the tip I'll have a look for that crimping tool it may come in handy 👍😁

@@CasualDIY good job. I believe that in aviation/ F1 etc they just crimp connectors, the right connector / wire combination and crimping tool (£hundreds) forms a cold weld between the connector and the wire. If you then solder this the solder wicks along the wire and forms a stress point for vibrations, just crimped you don't get the stress point. For the quality of crimps / tools we're using and because we're not seeing the vibrations they will I think a crimp then running enough solder to just wet the joint is the best solution. Probably. Keep up the good work.

Hi, I do not mean to insult you but your soldering skills are not up to much, you are making the mistake of melting the solder with your soldering iron instead of heating the wire and then applying the solder so it will flow into the strands of the wire.

You shouldn't solder and the put in a screw terminal anyway. The screw crushes the solder and risks the connection coming loose. The wires should be re crimped only.
