Elon Musk's Deal in China for Tesla's Self-Driving Program:
Elon Musk has reportedly secured an agreement to roll out Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in China. This comes after his visit to China where he met with top government officials to discuss the implementation of Tesla's autonomous driving technology and data handling practices to comply with local regulations.
This deal is significant as it allows Tesla to operate its advanced FSD technology in the world's largest auto market, potentially setting a precedent for autonomous vehicle deployment at scale. Musk's negotiations also likely involved discussions on how Tesla's data will be managed within China to adhere to stringent local data privacy and security laws.
Polestar's Fast Charging Demonstration:
Recently, Polestar showcased the rapid charging capabilities of its upcoming Polestar 5 model, which can achieve a charge from 10% to 80% in just under 10 minutes. This demonstration highlights the advancements in charging technology that are essential to making electric vehicles more convenient and practical for everyday use.
The ability to quickly recharge batteries is critical in increasing the adoption of electric vehicles by alleviating one of the major concerns potential buyers have about EVs: the charging time. Polestar’s technology could set a new standard in the industry for charging speeds.
NIO's Battery Innovation
NIO is advancing the electric vehicle industry with its public trials of new 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery packs in China. This innovative technology is set to enhance the energy density and efficiency of NIO's batteries, promising longer ranges and shorter charging times for future models. By pushing forward with these trials, NIO aims to lead in battery technology, setting a benchmark for others in the industry while also preparing for a broader commercial rollout.
Xiaomi SU7 Electric Vehicle
Xiaomi has quickly made a mark in the electric vehicle industry by producing 10,000 units of its first electric vehicle, the SU7, within just over a month of its launch. This milestone highlights Xiaomi's serious ambitions in the EV sector and its capability to leverage its manufacturing prowess. The rapid scale-up in production not only demonstrates Xiaomi's commitment to its new business line but also positions it as a significant player in the competitive EV market, particularly in China.
Affordable EV Leasing in Washington State: A new program in Washington State now offers EV leases for as low as $56 a month, targeted at middle- and lower-income families. This initiative aims to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable, potentially increasing EV adoption rates among a broader demographic.

On the topic of subsidizing EV's, people tend to forget that even now, the fossil fuel sector gets more subsidies than EV's. In 2023 the US subsidized fossil fuel to the tune of 7 Trillion dollars. If that would stop than the prize of fossil fuel would become so high that There would be no need to subsidize EV's because they would be far cheaper to own and run than ICE cars.

What's more, they are trying to demonize foreign government - China for encouraging EV development and investment.

Nope. Indeed, he just fired the Supercharger employees. How he will be able to walk with that hole in his foot is beyond me.

what peopel don't seem to realize is that the AVOIDED cost of gasoline can easily make your car payment. If you spend say $300 a month. So anyone can afford a car payment for if your lease payment is $90 you would have plenty of money left over.

I enjoyed the informative video. There was an article you read regarding the subsidizing of electric vehicles, I believe in Washington state? Yes that is a good thing for lower income households. However, I believe the reasoning behind the subsidizing of EV.s in any state or for any demographic is the fact that very few people actually want the dang things in the first place. The necessary infrastructure just simply isn't there in most states, unlike it is in California. Not to mention that each of the states has their own policies implemented when comparing to the state next to them. There are far too many variables at this point, against electric vehicles in North America. Not to mention the fact that the amount of energy it cost to produce the vehicles and batteries being far More than conventional vehicles. Where are the EV charging stations getting their electricity from? Is it renewable source or fossil fuels? Is the source sustainable and what kind of carbon footprint does it leave? These are just a few of the determining factors in whether or not EVS How are even necessary? With all that being said, I do believe there's a certain scenarios where an EV would be an excellent alternative to a gas burning vehicle, such as a densely populated city dwelling (taxi cab, delivery service, Ambulances, street sweepers, waste management vehicles, school bus). These types of vehicles would be better suited for an electric Power management system due to its close proximity to the area it's being used. I feel that going to is going to take some time and a lot more testing. The fact of the matter that most Americans aren't ready to give up their fossil fuel burning vehicles leaves us with an excellent alternative by using hybrid technology, which checks off many of the boxes have concerns for lecture vehicles. Another option is a plug-in hybrid, which is an all electric vehicle until that runs out of battery, and then it switches to gasoline. For short distance driving scenarios, it would basically render all the benefits of an electric vehicle without having the range anxiety of all electric vehicle due to the gasoline motor taking over once the battery dies. a third option which is currently being utilized by some manufacturers is the addition of a range extender small gasoline powered motor that Primarily charges up the battery when necessary under certain conditions or if need be overridden by the driver, if they were to know that the battery range would not be enough to make it to their destination. This would decrease the need for charging stations which in itself is costly to be added to the power grid and all of the energy it takes to produce the charging stations. Using a hybrid plug-in would answer almost every problem. There is with EV and gasoline engines by utilizing the best of both worlds. This would put far less strain on the current ageing power grid throughout North America, which is already approaching The tipping point.

Hi Ben, Is it possible to do an episode around the data of superchargers and what potential impact it might have around the charging experience for the future considering the decision this week. This could be with Tesla and non Tesla charging.

My daily commute is ~ 60 miles. A EV would easily work for me. I would keep my gas car for long road trip use. Going to make an EV my next vehicle to buy.

I have said this many places and I 100% think it will be and is true. When an average person can have an EV that gives them most of a charge in 10-15 minutes thenEVs will be fully viable. Until then no. Most people want simplicity. 95% of people that can afford n Ev but don't want a simqple 1 to 1 Gas replacement. Charging at home? Not a flipping chance. Stopping at a "gas" station is so ingrained in socsety it will take decades to unlearn.

China has private data security laws? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard this month. But more seriously, I have my doubts how much additional revenue FSD is going to generate. I’ve only tested the most recent version of FSD when it was made free for a month. I found that “supervising” FSD more psychologically taxing than just driving the car myself. Until Tesla manages to move to the next level of self-driving (unsupervised FSD) it’s hard for me to see there will be much change in its market position in China.
