When describing electric vehicle motor performance and battery size, many people get kW and kWh confused. This video explains the difference between them, when's the right time to use each term, and also throws in another handy term that's used to describe how hard a battery is being pushed during driving or charging.

I like the horsepower and gallons analogy for power and capacity - I think it would be a good starting point in any explanation for someone not familiar with electrical terminology

Great video again Euan, i kept up till we got to Ah's then i lost it ! I wish BMW would follow the rest and quote kWh re battery sizes too, but i can see the reasoning behind it , i think !

Excellent explanation Euan.

I find it useful to think of the instant power kW figure as kWh per hour (the "hours" cancel out mathematically, but I don't do that). So a Model 3 with a 74kWh pack, charging at 7.4 kWh/h (correctly therefore at 7.4kW) clearly takes 10 hours for a full charge (if it can maintain that rate to 100%).

I was just pulled over by a Cop and he should watch this video. I got a speeding ticket for 30 miles. But he made me wait an hour to write the ticket.

I have caught myself making the same mistake between kWh and kW :)

OOPS! at 4:10, a 94Ah battery can supply 94Amps (not Amp-hours!) for one hour - in theory.

Hi Mr Nixie. I can't hear anything wrong with what Euan said. With respect, please listen again - I stand to be corrected.

mrnixie he said 94 amps for one hour so your mistaken

Hi Byron, agreed. nAh = nA for h hours. I suspect that Mr Nixie has his own tubes to attend.

In the video he correctly said "94 amps for 1 hour", but incorrectly wrote "94 Ah for 1 hour". So you're both right :-)

This is my pet hate kW for everything mentioned
