It was widely known among the Scottish people that the sith could be dangerous creatures, it was not wise to meddle with them and commonly leaving them a wide berth was the safest action. On the other hand, some craved the knowledge and the power of the fae, and if they came face to face with the great gods of old, they would happily enter into a bargain or take their opportunity to win a wish from the beings, may times these boons granted to mortal men would come in the form of prophesy. But dealing with the sith is never straight forward, and the intent to change the future can often cause the undesired one to come true. It is in this latter category that we find Ewen (Hugh) of the little head.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is based on the Irish Dullahan and the Germanic folklore of the Wild Hunt, about a Hessian Soldier had his head blown off by a cannon ball during the American Revolution. American Author, Washington Irving is part Scottish, so yes, He also might be inspired by Scottish folklore like of the story of Ewen the little head.

It’s a shame British Columbia didn’t keep its original name of New Caledonia, so we could have had two New Scotlands. 😆

Between you, many Scottish folklore historians, #crecganford , #messeduporigins #stefanmilo and #lugh yall could possibly find the earliest known oral history of Headless Horsemen. Many it's older than that of the Highlands AND on the Continent.

Im really glad you do these videos. Count Dankula started to do Scottish myth videos, but he cant be fckd to keep up making them because he doesnt like that they get less views than madlads (which seems dumb to me, of course its not going to). Anyway, im pretty sure he just gave up after getting us addicted, so thank you for your amazing work!!

Quick note on the Dullahan. Despite his popularity Crofton Croker is not a reliable source. He's confirmed to have intentionally falsified at least one story and he claimed he had "lost" his collection journal and had to redo it from memory. There's not much evidence the term Dullahan was in use before Croker and the one older reference I have found does not describe the creature as headless, rather as a very generic ghost. Even after Croker there's no mention of the term in the Irish Folklore Collection even though the researchers were specifically instructed to look for it. Headless horseman figures are common in Irish folklore, but not by that term and things like the bone whip and the blood are completely absent, they seem to be pure Crokerisms.

@@LiathWolfwhat about wyverns?
@LiathWolf
@LiathWolf 10 месяцев назад
@@heatherturner2366 There might be some, depending on which description you believe. Wyverns are more common in the scottish boarders, I think this is because they are very prominaint in both english and welsh lore and those tales may have crossed the border. In Scotland we tend to have more great sea serpants which are considered dragons by many, but you can still find classic dragons and Bheithir, all over our country. Hope that helps.

Why do Scottish surnames start Mc or Mac??? I heard it was to do with clans but that makes no sense as they all the same?
@LiathWolf
@LiathWolf 6 месяцев назад
The prefix Mc or Mac in Scottish names, translates from the Gaelic word for "son of". So take the name John MacDonald, john son of donald. The word Clan, is the "Children of". So Clan MacDonald is "the children of Donalds sons". That was the original use of the words, it changes a little through history, but thats the basics. hope that helps. (not all clan members are blood related, on occasions people would take on a differing clan name by swearing loyalty to the chief, etc)
