You can find enigmatic Ewenny Priory in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.
The village is very close to the town of Bridgend.
This tranquil location inspired JMW Turner who visited the priory in 1795 during his trip to South Wales. His watercolour painting of Ewenny Priory can be found in the Museum of Wales.
Ewenny Priory church is open to the public, it’s run by CADW and it’s free to enter although the rest of the priory behind those big walls and the medieval gatehouse is private.
With all its fortifications, you may forgive yourself to think you are approaching a castle and not a priory.
The priory church is Romanesque and quite austere but it’s very peaceful. You are only 2 miles from the centre of Bridgend but you feel as if you are in the heart of the countryside.
Ewenny Priory is only 2 miles from Ogmore Castle so it is easy to visit both sites.

When I was a young teenager, 50 years ago, Ewenny Priory had one open day a year. My friend and I would cycle there from Pantyrawel, also visiting Ewenny Pottery, Ogmore Castle and cross the stepping stones to the swinging bridge and Merthyr Mawr/Candleston Castle en route before cycling back home. We did a lot of cycling back in the day...!

I grew up in Bridgend. My girlfriend from Aug 10th 1989 lived in Ewenny just off New Inn Road. She later became my wife and then mother to my daughter in the late 90's, so the next bit is ok. We used to walk down there and chat, then use the enclosed lower section of the north tower for, lets call it heavy petting. Lucky for us it was not a pool and no lifeguard was there to raise an eyebrow! I don't want to waste your time commenting on all of your videos but I have spent some time watching them of late and they are delightful and well shot. Thank you.

My ancestor, Sir Payn de Turberville, was allotted the castle and lordship of Coyty, and then was established in Wales the great house of Turbevill, seated at Coyty, Tythegstone, Penbline, Lantwitt Major, and Ewenny Abbey

Fascinating video. People driving through Wales might want visit that place, if they knew about it. I knew what a monastery, convent, nunnery and abbey were, but never heard of priory. Now, I know what a priory, prior and prioress are. One suggestion: add "St. Michael's Priory Church in Ewenny, Wales" into the title.

A very nice video. It is amazing how they could set the stones and the structure stand as straight and as long as they have.

It is a very underrated place and a lot of work has gone into preserving it. I was there on my own for quite a long time.

Thank you Marcus, for showing us great places in South Wales (mostly East of Swansea), I was wondering. have you heard of Alan Wilson? he was from Cardiff, and he has investigated South Wales for historical reasons, and some of his findings are amazing. they are in your area.

Hi Marcus and Mel. My wife and myself really enjoyed watching your walkabouts. Is it possible to give an update on the work being carried out on the porthcawl pier. As you mentioned a while back in a previous walkabout. Are they nearly completed. Kind regards Kevin and Diane Vanstone. Cardiff.

Hi, thanks for watching. It still doesn't look like the Pier or the Eastern Prom will be open in the very near future. I would be surprised if they finish by Easter.
