Many people have left the Mormon church in recent years. Today we meet up with an ex-Mormon who explains to us why this is happening.
This is the last video in our Mormon (LDS) series. Check out our Mormon playlist where I have:
-3 videos about those in the church
2 videos about the fundamentalist Mormons (to show the difference between them and the non fundamentalists).
-1 video about someone who's left the Mormon church.

This is the last video from the 6-part Mormon series: ru-vid.com/group/PLEyPgwIPkHo6jjSMpNn5YxgxHYmCJcQXX. In this Mormon series we made 3 videos about those in the church and loving it, 1 video about someone who left the church, and 2 videos about Mormon fundamentalism (which is completely different from the mainstream Mormon church). The goal was to give you a range of perspectives. Like all of my content, it’s about showing you what I come into contact with and I hope you learned something from this series. With that said, I chose 3 stories about those happy with the mainstream Mormon church and 1 story about someone who is against it. I could have done the opposite. Watch my content, watch other people’s content, enjoy the freedom in forming your own opinion. No one person has all of the answers or the truth. And to all Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members, I was trying to reach an audience out of the church to bridge understanding. If I titled these videos by your full name or LDS, no one outside of the church would have watched. Everyone knows Mormon, most people don’t know LDS. I apologize if that was cringe for you. Thank you so much for all off you who participated in this series!

1. How do Mormons look at mental illness and people with mental illnesses? 2. I have a severe mental illness which makes me disabled. I cannot support myself so the government does. There's no way I could financially support a wife and kids. What would the Mormon church say to me? Would they want me as a member?

I lived in rural Utah for three years in high school, and as a non-Mormon it was hell. I had a 'free period' each day that was meant to go across the street to seminary, but since I didn't go I often just sat in the library. They made life a pure hell for me. You really find out what it's like to be a minority when you live in rural Utah as a non-Mormon. They had church days in the park on weekends, and if I came to the park that day they would ignore me as if I didn't exist. "We can't make you leave, but no one will talk to you." My mother had a German welcome sign on our door "Willkommen" and the church sent a committee to our house. They stood on the lawn and wanted us to take down the welcome sign because they thought it was a 'Satanic" symbol. I told my mom don't take it down, but she took it down because she was afraid of the Mormons. Several kids were not allowed to talk to me and I wasn't welcome in their home because I wasn't Mormon. I still have Mormon friends today I met back then. I don't dislike or hate them or anything. It was an interesting experience. But I wish I hadn't lived there for my few precious years of high school.

This sounds absolutely horrible. I have always struggled socially and a lot of the times I get people who I can see don't want to talk to me for whatever reason and that hurts like hell. Most of them Christians by the way. I cannot imagine how hard it would be if that was to be the norm. That would have brought depression over me or maybe worse.

Clearly none of that particular congregation went on any missions to Germany. There are also some Pennsylvania Dutch that have some symbols that have been used in New Age religions that may have been similar to something on your sign that freaked them out. Regardless it was your property, not theirs. I can imagine it must have been hard living in a small town and feeling isolated. They missed out on getting to know you and your family. I should add, it does and can happen inside the Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ Church as well. If people don't fit the "traditional" both parents mold it can feel isolating as well. They really need to be better at the way they approach people, non members and members as well. 💗

He was an elder of some type and the man who was raping his own children confessed to this doctor and the church covered it up. Find out if he is still working for this cult. And the Masons received or tried to preserve theses ordinances from the original Temple ordinances of the temple in the old and new testament. So yes, it will be familiar. The difference is that God restored these ordinances in the last days through a prophet. Book of Revelations "An Angel shall fly through the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel" If it was still on the earth, then why would John the Revelator describe an angel bringing it forth in the last days? Don't be so quick discount the Saints and what they have. There is more to it then most will understand or even want to understand. Narrow is the path and straight is the gate that leads to eternal life and few be there that find it.

See what God said in the Qur’an about Christians: O People of the Book, do not go to extremes in your religion, and do not say anything about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His word He delivered to Mary and a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His Messengers, and do not say three. Stop It is better for you, but God is one God, Glory be to Him, to have a son to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and God is sufficient as a Guardian. Christ will not disdain to be a slave of God, nor the angels who are close to Him. Those who said that God is the Messiah, the son of Mary, have disbelieved. Say, “Who can possess anything from God if he wants to destroy the Messiah, the son of Mary, his mother, and all those on earth, and God has the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, He creates what He wills, and God has power over all things.” And the Jews and Christians said, “We are God’s children and loved ones.” Say He did not torment you for your sins, but you are human beings who were created to forgive whomever he wills and punish whomever he wills.O People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to you, explaining to you during a period of the Messengers, that you should say: No good tidings nor warners have come to us, for there has come to you a tidings of good tidings and a warner, and God has power over all things. Those who said that God is the Messiah, the son of Mary, have disbelieved, and the Messiah said, “O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. He who associates with God, God has forbidden him Paradise, and his abode is the Fire. And the unjust have no helpers.”Those who said that God is the third of three, while there is no god but one God, have disbelieved, and if they do not desist from what they say, a painful punishment will befall those who disbelieve among them, so will they not repent to God and ask His forgiveness, and God is Forgiving, Most Merciful? The Messiah, son of Mary, is nothing but a messenger, messengers have passed away before him, and his mother is a believer. They used to eat food. See how we explain the signs to them, then see how they misrepresent.Say: Do you worship besides God that which possesses neither harm nor benefit for you, and God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing?Say, O People of the Book, do not go to extremes in your religion other than the truth, and do not follow the whims of a people who have gone astray before, and they have led many astray, and have strayed from the right path. And when God said, “O Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to the people, take me and my mother as two gods besides God?” He said, “Glory be to you, it is not for me to say what I have no right to say. If i said it, then you know it, you know what is in my soul, and I do not know what is in your soul, that you are the Knower of the unseen. I only said to them what you commanded me to do: to worship God, my Lord and your Lord, and I was a witness over them as long as I was among them. So when you caused me to die, you were the watcher over them and you were a witness over everything. If you punish them, they are your slaves, and if you forgive them, then you are the Mighty, the Wise God said, “This is a day when the truthful will benefit from their truth. For them are gardens beneath which rivers flow, therein to abide forever. May God be pleased with them and they will be pleased with Him.” That is the great victory. And they said, The Most Gracious has taken a son, Glory be to Him, but rather honored slaves.They do not precede Him by saying, and they act by His command, He knows what is between their hands and what is behind them, and they do not intercede except for those whom He is pleased with, and they fear Him.

I grew up Mormon and I never fully believed. I always felt as if people were putting on a front all the time, and I sensed that as a kid. Not enough transparency and everything seemed so orchestrated. Never sat well with me. Recently I looked into the church again as I now have five kids of my own and I decided once and for all that it wasn’t the right way to go. That being said, Mormons are some of the nicest, most genuine people I have ever met. Not all of the members are judgmental like some of the stories out there. There are many amazing people within the church. We have friends who are Mormon and don’t judge us. I think that what the church is based on isn’t something I agree with, but so many of the people have pure intentions. I do not regret growing up Mormon, I do think that it helped shape my values. I took what good I could get from it and left the things that weren’t good behind. I definitely have mixed feelings on it but overall it’s not something I’m willing to commit to. I am thankful for what I got out of it and the wonderful people I met along the way.

As a lifelong Christian I can relate so much to the feelings this man shared. We don’t realize what a powerful hold a church can have on a human being in the name of faith. So many churches of every denomination seem to sweep sexual assault under the carpet and people in the churches are afraid to speak up because they don’t want to make the church “look bad”. Or they’ve been manipulated to think that it would be gossiping and that’s a sin. What they don’t realize is how much harm they add to the situation. 😢it’s very sad.

It's not fair to little kids who can't reason yet to inculcate them. I went through a similar thing when I left the Catholic church. You become an adult. You have a mind of your own. You have been forced to believe something that you later realize is unbelievable. This man shows great bravery and integrity.

I am 39 and left the LDS church on my 18th birthday. My parents are still very in love and involved with the church. When I was younger they were very judgemental and had a sense of superiority towards others because they have the "whole truth" and feel responsible for sharing it. They were saddened when I left and said the words "where did we go wrong." It is believed that if you grow up with the "truth" and then later deny it, you are worse off than someone who has never even heard of it before. My parents literally grieve myself and my siblings who have left, because we will not be together forever because we don't want to be a part of it. However now years later my parents have truly become the most unconditionally loving people in the planet. They no longer judge us nor push their beliefs on us and rather accept us and love us for who we are even though we are not in the church.

Similar here. Grew up in a large Mormon house (8 siblings). I started to leave (as much as I could) about freshman year. I had been literally dragged to church by my dad. I got so tired of them sending mormonites (what I call missionaries) I finally let two in my apartment in my twenties and got one of them to leave the church. I now feel terrible about that but I am still the black sheep who is invited to everything and go to a lot of family events. They are disappointed when I show up. Obviously this still affects me deeply. Wish I had the reaction you did.

I’m the great grand daughter of a prophet and the great great grand daughter of a prophet and the great great great grand daughter of Hyrum Smith. My entire, entire life was the Mormon faith for 40 years. Every decision I made, every thought I had, all my feelings, they were all tied up in my faith. I was betrayed. I was mislead. My trust was misplaced. I made the excruciating decision to leave. My sense of honesty wouldn’t allow me to stay and play along. I have suffered tremendously in my journey out. I have lost friends, I have lost associations, I have lost community, my children’s grandmother no longer speaks to them. She (my own mother) no longer speaks to me either. We are now apostates. We are now a lost cause. To lose your entire worldview and everybody you thought you had and every hope you thought you had and all the answers you thought you had, it can’t be understated how devastating that is, and how psychologically traumatic it is. I did nothing wrong. I spoke the truth that I had found that had been hidden for me, and I was ostracized and gaslight for it. This man’s story mirrors my own.

I'm really sorry that this happened to you... On the bright side you are free now and you can get to know God for real if you so choose. It has been my personal experience that true believers become your real family when you get saved. That may or may not be blood relatives. And it requires no church membership or tithe, etc. Even Jesus said that his real family were those that truly did the will of God and He wants to dwell with them for all eternity (for real). Please don't give up hope because God is still on the throne! No, we can't be gods like Him, but we are meant to have a relationship with Him, our Heavenly Father and our Creator. Mark 3:33-35 KJV 33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

You do realize how satanic that is, right? 😮 It's great you were able to leave a "religion" at the expense of losing your family, but don't leave or forsake the love for God. 😊 All holidays that Christians celebrate are pagan in origin and should be forsaken. Hi Yeshalloween-When I was 19 years old, I converted to Mormonism. Shortly after that, I met a returned missionary who insisted that God had prepared me to join the church so that I’d be ready to marry His faithful servant. I bought into his narrative-hook, line, and sinker-and married him in the DC temple a little over a year after my baptism. After years of emotional abuse (and meetings with bishops in which nothing was done to correct the abuse), I ended my marriage. (The loneliest seat in a Mormon chapel is the one where a divorcee sits.) I am now on the list of “less active” members. The fact is that I stopped attending church approximately six years ago. I am very much at peace with where I am today. Kindness is the doctrine I follow. Patience is my journey (at times a very rocky journey). My sisters and their husbands are still active members of the church. We’re as close as ever. I know that in their prayers, they pray for my return to the fold. I also know that if I told them some facts about the church, their testimonies would fracture, but I won’t do that. They are happy and secure in their beliefs; I wouldn’t think of taking that away from them. I wish you peace and joy throughout your life.

As a person who’s lived in Utah my entire life and not growing up in the church, I can tell you that it’s hard to be a kid who’s not allowed to be friends with some of the Mormon kids. It makes you feel like an outsider. As an adult it has been hard to see my own children go through the same thing. I can’t understand why some parents suddenly won’t let their kid play with my kid when they find out that they’re not Mormon. Every neighborhood I’ve lived in has had certain people who won’t even talk to me because I don’t attend their church. I’ve become pretty antisocial and I no longer attempt to make friends with my neighbors. I guess I feel as though if they don’t know me, they cannot hurt me or my family. I don’t hate these people, I just choose not to associate with them. My best friend since age 7-8 also didn’t grow up in the church, but now is a member is one exception to the people who I am very close to who are members of the church. People ask me why I stay here, and my answer is that it’s hard to leave when this is where my family is. My kids are here and now my three grandchildren are also here. My husband and I have no desire to leave everyone who means the world to us. It hasn’t been easy, but there’s a reason why we choose to stay. And there are still plenty of people who are pretty great who would never judge us over such trivial things as what church you belong to or not. I just thought I’d give my perspective on growing up as essentially an outsider to the Mormon capital of the world.

I was raised in the church and have been inactive (not practicing) for 5 years. I was a mostly believing member up until about 3 years ago. My approach was different then Todd's where he did a lot of history digging. I never did that because I knew I would find things I questioned. My approach was relying on spiritual confirmations and revelations. At about 18:06, Todd talks about going to the Kirtland Temple in hopes of a spiritual confirmation that he never receives. My approach was similar as I was struggling with my faith at 32 years old. I remember being desperate and praying for a spiritual answer 3 specific occasions and for the answer to be, "Go back to church and live it's teachings." I never got that overwhelming confirmation that that should be my path going forward, so I never went back. My wife and I have discussed many times what 'feeling the spirit' may have been over the years. We had always been taught that the feeling was confirmation that the church was true, that what we were being taught was true, that we should adhere to it. Our answer for that now is it was probably of feeling of peace and love. What we were participating in was still a form of worship/meditation/prayer. A stronger connection to ones spirit/soul, universe, karma, creator, etc. was being made. I have special love for those who have had to or will have to dissect their faith in the LDS church. It has been incredibly difficult and is still a continuous process. I continually ask what the valuable principles taught to me in the church were that I want to carry with me and what are those that do not serve or make sense to me moving forward. Happy journeying 🙏

Yes there was hardship with family and friends at that time. With that said, being raised mormon and having a positive structure blessed my life. I believe my upbringing led me to a relationship with and eventually marriage to the most amazing Christlike woman. She has greatly enriched my life. I was so disgusted with their decisions. The cover ups. The blame on “free agency”. “We’re the true church! Remember, the people aren’t always right, but the church is!” Bull. Especially with the sexual abuse and stuff they’ve swept under the rug. Just, thank you for making this.
@MrPompousClown
@MrPompousClown 3 месяца назад
Caryn - by free agency they mean the ability to choose good over evil, liberty and eternal life as Packer puts it. That is not entirely true. By nature we are sinful and destined to hell through the fall. Only God is good, we are morally incapable in our wills to save ourselves through any works. Faith is the gift of God lest any man boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). The only true statement is that we are free to make choices that have consequences however we're not free to do whatever we please as God's moral law tells us what is right and wrong and the beauty of putting trust in Christ is the freedom that comes with it in being given the desire to love him and not wanting to sin. That being said we're still in a sinful state until death. What's beautiful about it is when Christ forgives and makes you into a new person, the penalty of sin is washed away through Justification. But yes you are correct, you're not free to question, just blindly follow and accept the pat answers given. Mormons are the masters at deception and twisting scripture - besides all the damage caused by their system that sucks the life out of them. If you desire to know what IS actually true and desire an actual relationship with God and seek eternal life, read the Bible alone and turn to Jesus (God incarnate) by placing your trust in him. About three years ago I did and became a new creature in Christ. 😃 In the meantime this video may clear up differences between Mormonism and Christianity. Thank you for reading this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IQNObk2qAwo.htmlsi=cVksCEb5cCB8iuiC

I started having doubts about the lds faith at 16. I kept it to myself until I left my parents' home at 18 for college, and once I entered the adult world, I had more doubts. Prayed about it because that is what I was taught and never received any answers, so I left and have never looked back. Best decision I ever made. My family just told people I was in- active but still supported the church in ways that went on for 20 years. Some years ago, at a family function, I think it was a family reunion at a a testimony meeting by the fire pit and I was asked in a group scenario to share my testimony. When it was my turn, I just came out with it and said I haven't had a testimony since I was a teenager. I personally left and haven't gone back to church since my early 20s. I do not believe. I am not sure what my mother has said, but I don't consider myself lds or Mormon at all. I am about to turn 42 in 2024. My extended family has not treated me differently to my knowledge, and I'm still accepted, but I don't share why because they haven't asked me. I figure if they want to know, they will ask. It's been 6 years since that day, and I feel I'm in a better place with family than I was as a teenager because I just tell it like it is.

I'm in the process of leaving, after a really traumatizing experience i went through as a young mother. It happened 9 years ago, and its been a difficult process to say the least. I grew up most of my life in UT county, and now live in Soutern UT. I have so many bitter and sweet feelings towards my own experiences within the church. It is painful, and i dont have ANY animosity towards the church, despite going through something truly awful. I love my fellow church members! They're some of the most humble and loving people! I just feel more love and closeness to my Lord in other Christian churches now. Its the "mormon culture" I think i struggle with the most in Utah to be honest. Its so strong that members dont even know that they're doing it! I loved the LDS church in Missouri so much. We were a mega minority in the town i lived in, and it was so different to be on that flip-side. The transition out is such a mental, emotional, and spiritual process. But i FINALLY feel peace, and a true relationship with my Savior since switching to a Baptist church. I feel things I've never felt in an LDS church. And i recognize that my journey is specific to me. I dont judge anyone! My mom and dad are still very active LDS, and we have open conversations often. I'm going to end this by saying that i LOVE your videos Peter! Great thinking! Have you ever wondered if there was some kind of connection or relationship between all the historical religions? Could they all be an expression of truth tailored to the needs of particular times and people? Sort of like grades in a school, where we are taught basic addition and subtraction in the first grade because that's what we're ready for. Then the teacher of each grade thereafter builds on the foundation of the first grade teacher to expand our understanding of math. The teachers in the school of religion would be such as Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Zoroaster, Krishna, etc. who presented the teachings that his era needed. This is consistent with the idea of God being a heavenly Father who loves and cares for all of his children, and provides the divine education for all, not just one small group.

That’s right! Religion is not the key. God does not expect us to be in a religion to be with him, he expects us to have a relationship with Him. Religion will not get you anywhere but down the broad road of destruction that Yahusha spoke of in Mathew. There’s a significant difference in “religion” and having a relationship with God, who’s name is actually Yah and not God or lord or Jesus….

Peter, I'm 60 yrs old, grew up in Salt Lake City in the 60's and 70's. There has ALWAYS been a problem with cover-ups in local leaders of the church (bishops of local wards). In fact, it was far worse in the past, has actually improved today due to the Olympcs in 2002 there - it opened up Utah to the world and UT, the church in general went thru a ton of scrutiny worldwide so they wanted to present their best face. Sexual abuse was NEVER brought to the police, the church "handled it." I know this was still happening less than 20 yrs ago in some cases (my friend's great niece was molested by her father and it was "resolved" by the bishop alone). The church doesn't teach its own true history against Native Americans. Growing up, we were taught that racial mixing wasn't disallowed, but it would be bad for the offspring of such a union. The UT government (all LDS) for over a century overlooked all the problems with the polygamists in the state (because in reality, they were distant cousins)! Polygamists towns/compounds are rife with abuse, physical, mental, sexual. The church was aware of the crimes but ignored them - again, until the Olympics were coming. A teenager near Logan was forced to marry her uncle. She ran away and made it to the cops. They sent her back to her father who then returned her to her uncle. She was beaten and basically imprisoned. Many, many examples. In my opinion, it's the local leaders/members that have the most blame, not the prophet and his disciples. I have so many examples, stories, etc. Also, it all comes back to Joseph Smith was a charlatan, a womanizer, actually not womanizer because his illicit affairs were with teenage girls. But, he got away with it by stating he had a vision that polygamy should be enacted. Just a farce!! Thx for this video and Happy New Year🎉

Peter, your channel is by far my favorite. I was born into the LDS church and have lived in Utahs bubble my entire life (34 yrs). It's been a real treat being able to see other cultures and the world through your channel. The world is so different from the tunnel vision I was raised in. My father is a "religious extremist" and raised me with some really harmful beliefs. I left the church 20 years ago, and with the indoctrination from leaders and parents, it still causes me to feel guilt somedays. After struggling for so long with the back and forth about if I'm making the right decision, about a year ago, I decided to shelve the battle. Since that day, I've felt mostly peace for the first time. I've been surprised with the mental struggle of leaving something that was pounded into a core belief at a young age. I really appreciated this series and the respect that you show to all walks of life. Thank you.

I think it is important that you are making an effort to get the perspective of those from both inside and outside of the LDS church. If possible, it would be awesome if you could speak to someone like Don Bradley, who is a leading author and historian regarding the churches history. He was raised in the church and later in life left the church because of what he learned about the church's past. Then, he rejoined the church based on further study of church history. I think he would be such an interesting person for you to connect with as he has a very unique view of the subject given his personal past with the church as well as his area of expertise. Based on other stuff I have seen him do, I would guess he would be more than willing to do an interview with you or something. If your world view is so narrow that anyone who doesn’t accept your world view is triggering you, there is something wrong with your worldview. Most of the rest of us can happily accept the majority of people as normal, even when they are different from us. It’s my experience that only in Mormondom do you start to see language that creates categories of worthiness for people. For example Mormons like to call me “unworthy”, “inactive”, “unsealed” but the rest of the world just sees me as a fellow human. IMO Mormons are among the most judgemental people I have ever met. If you could practice your religion and not feel compelled to bring everyone else with you, you might be able to engage in sincere relationships with people who don’t share your faith nor want to.

The issue is not that there are predators in any mass of people, the issue is how it is handled. Is it brushed under the rug, like this man watched? Or is every step taken to protect the children, teens, and other members or attendees? Perpetrators require an umbrella of protection to operate. Silence, speaking out being strongly discouraged, cover up, even placing the predator in charge of kids-all provides protection and access. Most predators have multiple victims. The average is 70. Serial predators is much higher. So, it’s gross negligence at best that this man is protesting. Good on him.

Such great interviews Peter! I appreciate so much that your interviews are 100% based on gaining an understanding with such an open mind; it really makes me strive to understand why people think or act the way that perhaps I would not, and do so with love and kindness. Keep up the good work! I wish there were a thousand of you reporting all over the world so that we could get true news without hidden agendas.

I grew up in palmyra, ny where the Mormon church began. I did research into the towns history and found old newspaper clippings. The founders of the Mormon church did not have a good reputation at that time. I don’t know what happened between then and now.

As someone who used to be religious I miss it because it made all your problems in life seem insignificant. I was barely in elementary school when I realized my terrible life didn't matter because this was just a blink of an eye. Losing that shattered my ability to accept and feel comfortable with a difficult life but I never found anything to replace it or grew determination to fix life

Dear Chris, what happened that you lost all of your faith? What religion were you raised in, and why did you leave?
