It's been 13 years since the collapse of the National Soccer League.
Today, just 17 players from that era are still playing in the A-League.
In tonight's special feature, we hear their thoughts on where the game has been... and where it's heading.
Darren Mara (@DazzMara) reports for SBS World News.

This was a bit Sydney centric. No mention of South Melbourne or other Melbourne clubs. Anyway, the NSL was a passionate league and true breeding ground for Australian talent unlike the the current A league. Basically you can’t franchise fun which is what the A league was attempting to do. And there is still crowd trouble. Maybe de-ethnicising the game and crowd violence are not related. Watching the A league is like watching “it’s a knockout “. I refuse to go to the games until (at the least) the old NSL get the right to compete in the A league through promotion and relegation. If you look at AFL or NRL teams the older teams all started out serving a particular community. It may have been Catholic or Protestant or something else. That’s is why these leagues have gone from strength to strength because it was always tribal. I can only speak for the a club like South Melbourne which if allowed to prosper will become a juggernaut in Australian football because not only does it have a large Greek community backing but it had started to branch out and have non ethnic support. It had started making the transition before the old NSL was canned. I have no doubt that other clubs would have done the same. Sometimes you need to allow things to organically develop. That is the only way to build a successful competition.

The old NSL was a production line for truly skill full players........the clubs inspired loyalty like no other code in the country.....while the A-league is a bland passionless go through the motions bore fest.

What the fuck is Santalab talking about? Parra Power copped stick from United (he played for both) fans because their team was full of ex players, making it a rivalry just like Rugby League had big rivalries. I went with my family for years and there was no trouble at all even with the biggest rivals, Sydney United and Olympic. The worst would be a small pocket of kids that got a bit drunk at times and just bothered each other. Saying there was a lot of crowd trouble is just a downright fucking lie.

What is Santalab talking about? It was the ethnic rivalries and trouble at grounds that made the NSL what it was. An exciting competition.

The sooner the old ethnic clubs fall by the wayside the better.

people like you are the reason australian soccer is fucked in the future. If it wasn't for these ethnic clubs there would be no passion and that is obvious in the a league. no one gives a shit about the a league anymore

Like it or not those "ethnic" clubs are what made the golden generation and represented a fanbase that stood faithful to the sport unlike the sports journalists and public that "joined" the sport after years of mocking and belittling it. Here we are 15 years after its demise and we have yet to match that standard despite holding a "professional" league and appealing to a "wider audience." How is this so? The A-League is unable to promote younger talent like the NSL, having being confined to the Y-League where they play around a dozen matches a year and on the flipside, the amount of money in league means that it can't bring in superstars like other national leagues do. Thus, resulting in crowd attendances having minimal to no growth at all. The clubs, until recently, had no influence on the league itself and the recent trend in catering to the womens game with equal pay whilst also holding their anti-ethnic structure, is effectively hypocritical of the game, and of Australian sport in general where every other sport is allowed to pander to minorities whilst soccer is discredited for doing so. These clubs are still there after 15 years, and with the A-League not attracting many new viewers the reality will be that some of these ethnic clubs will return to the top flight of football (or if a compromise can be met to form a second division).
