Them floppies have a very limited life span. Even if you keep them safely stored in a humid-free environmentally controlled space, they utilize magnetic storage. IF they are still readable, they surely won't be after another 20-30 years.

I hope whoever wins the auctions for the source code and utilities does something with it outside of just collecting it. Now... I wouldn't ask whoever pays the kings ransom for these things to then just give them away... but please do something with them. Create a wiki and document this rich and important piece of early computer gaming history. Honor this mans legacy. I'm so jealous you got to meet this man on his turf, and see his treasure trove along side with him as your tour guide. He truly is one of the forefathers of video game history and his contributions were so memorable and influential. I hope the purchase of these higher end items comes with a lengthy interview so we can capture those moments for all to see forever and ever.

Yeah the whole video I was thinking a) I hope these floppies are still readable b) I hope whoever buys them backs them up to a more modern storage medium. A lot of them. They might not put them online but they’d be the best place to hold on to a copy.

Al Lowe is such a nice guy. We got to hang out with him a few months ago, and it was absolutely sublime. I knew he had a reputation for being a nice guy, but he exceeded expectations in person. Suddenly "Al Lowe" turns into your favorite uncle, and hilarity takes over. I wish we could have more connections like this to those that created some of the great games from years ago. Thanks, MJR, for doing this video. It opens the eyes of many viewers and helps give a glimpse into the people behind some great games. Imagine what a talented person could do with the source code of older games... there are so many titles that have lost their source code, like Spyro and Crash, which would (if found) be invaluable to modders. Not that Activision would ever let anyone use the source code of their IPs without sending multiple cease and desist notifications, but still, the _potential!_

That was great, guys! Love me some Al Lowe, wish I could just thank him for all the wonderful memories he helped create. Underage memories of playing the first Larry game ...until my dad realized the content of the game and took it away. I've always found the story of the Leisure Larry betatesters very interesting. Apperently Sierra sent test floppies to beta testers, people would play it and the game would log any unhandled input. The floppies were sent back and Al Lowe added many additional input and synonyms to the Larry game. Which explains why Larry 1 is relatively user-friendly, compared to Kings Quest or Police Quest.

@@cyde79 I'm sure leisure suit Larry 4 is around their somewheres. It's always been this urban myth that the master discs got lost or erased. While the game was being produced or that any number of things like that happen. When they started talking about lowering his attic. I immediately thought they're finally going to find the game under a couple of loose boards or something while poking around his boxes of stuff. God I miss leisure suit Larry games. I know everybody hates the ones for consoles, but at least they were something after such a long absence. I've never played all the games for a couple of reasons, mostly to do with what I can do with computer hardware and can't do. I gave up playing video games on computers a long time ago because you always needed something different. You had to much of this or not enough of that and gamesRequired all that foolishness and I got fed up with that real Fast. I like taking a disk turning on the machine and it just works. No having to upgrade or downgrade or anything like that. I don't think they made a complete leisure suit Larry box collection that will just run on a basic windows XP computer without having to worry about. If your video card is too fast or too slow, or how much RAM you have or any of that other crap. I can't even are member what operating system I was running when I played leisure suit Larry love for sale. I want to say I was running Windows 95 probably on a IBM Aptiva Pentium 75 is what my brain is saying which should be about right. That would've been my first computer. Every computer game I always seem to have a problem where the video card was too fast or to use while or didn't have enough RAM or any number of other reasons, and it just got monotonous. At one point I tried to install a videogame in the that was clearly labeled or the and it totally screwed up the operating system when it up losing everything that was on the computer because the bloody shop decided to simply reinstall windows And Remove everything. It was around that point I stuck with consoles and never went back to computers. I know at one point I've bought a leisure suit Larry collection that in clued the leisure suit Larry casino game as well. As all the other cup games in the series, which was several years before they did the console games. I'll probably never see another leisure suit Larry game. Obviously they'll never do one for console again on. Fortunately, I know they did a remake of the first game a couple years back for computer. But once again there's the whole issue of it probably requires one operating system or another and your computer can't be a certain age, or be two new. They never did figure out that whole concept of just stick it in and it works without screwing something up.

This stuff needs to be preserved. Honestly it should be in a museum and not owned by some collector. I really hope the person who wins the auction will archive this stuff. It's important video game history.

I feel like all of this should be digitally archived at Archive.org, and then donated to International Center for the History of Electronic Games/The Strong Museum in Rochester, NY for display and physical archival...

Always enjoy seeing history like this and it's so awesome that somebody was forward-thinking enough to back these games up.Here's hoping any of the buyers make sure these end up in a museum for preservation and historical purposes so they're not lost and again forgotten in another collection!

Honestly people keep mentioning "a data recovery team", I really doubt you could get anything better from professional data recovery off a 5.25" floppy than what you'll get from a KryoFlux (forensic floppy disk controller, not that expensive relatively speaking) and a decent floppy drive.

Am I the only one worrying that the only remaining source code for some of these games should be going to a museum instead of to a private collection? Al has no way to know or vet the auction winners and I’m just horrified that this code could be lost forever. This is to take nothing away from the fact that Al is making a huge contribution to all of us here. I just worry about the irreplaceable things like the source materials.

I've had quite a few Sierra games over the years and to find you MJR, and by default get to finally know so many of the sierra staffers from back in the day has been a real full circle experience for me. As a NASCAR Racing fan I always knew of Dave Kaemmer and those that worked on that series, but to see you both in a room with Al in a mini Sierra reunion of sorts, I sit back and think about it and there's just not many times in life where someone gets to have that sort of vicarious experience 25 years later. In short, THANK YOU.
