Andrew do you know of any free literacy education programs that may be available to him? In Australia we have volunteers who learn how, and then teach people who can’t read and write on a one to one basis. Here one of these is called “Read, Write Now” I wonder could he access something similar? I just Googled and it appears that New York Public Library has classes available. I’m in Australia so have no idea whether this might be applicable, but could be a place to start.

I found his repeated complaints that he was essentially illiterate in English to be implausible. He speaks rather fluently, took a written course in real estate and passed a written exam. And his upbringing had massive amounts of reading, even if it was in religious Hebrew. Still, it was READING. Big advantage over millions of immigrants that truly come from an almost illiterate background.

More amazing than a Hollywood movie is the true story of Chaim Meisels, the great grandson of Rebbe Moshe Teitelbaum, leader of the Satmar Hasidim. Although the Satmars are well known for being anti-Zionist, Chaim left New York as a young man and enlisted in the Israeli army. Chaim did not speak modern Hebrew or English. In a short time, he became fluent in both languages. The handsome young man became tan and fit. He became an officer in the Israeli army, part of an elite unit and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. He kept his identity hidden but was discovered. Israeli media sought him out and he was interviewed a number of times on Israeli television. Chaim Meisels returned to the United States. He gradually returned to the Hasidim. In May 2023, he was married in a religious ceremony to the daughter of a Hasidic rabbi.

It tears my heart to hear of someone that had such a hard upbringing😢 I grew up in a nearby community and studied computers in school (not a Jewish school) with a group that drove in to NYC every night for class from Kiryas Joel. So not everyone by any means has such a restrictive upbringing. Some of those I knew from school went on to have successful careers in computer science while remaining part of the Satmar community.

I am a chasidic jew that can read speak and write English I am well educated and know everything about the world should it be medicine medical science nature etc. and I enjoy life. Sorry for Joseph for having to go through such a rough time, there is always help out there to help you clarify your confusion and concerns, But to go spread hate against a religion is non ethical and inappropriate, every religion or community can make mistakes and it simply needs to be addressed and if there is a bad community then leave it but doesn't mean that all chasidic community's are bad or any religion you are from is bad just seek the help and clarify it. And just to be clear the Jewish religion and being chasidic is not the same, chasidic is just a way to praise and believe in God, you can be Jewish without being chasidic (not saying that chasidic is bad just saying it's a choice,) But if you went through something bad in a community doesn't give you the right to spread hate especially with people only interviewing those who had a bad experience... how about hearing the other side of the story and interviewing people who are successful and enjoy the chasidic community? Speaking about abuse there are far more abuse by the non Jewish families look up for yourself the studies... Abuse can happen anywhere to anyone and to any religion or community... Bottom line is it's not bad at all to be a chasidic jew especially a plain jew if you know how it works you can enjoy life and be well educated and still be chasidic it's just the way you approach and understand it. If you don't it you can be a jew without being chasidic or you can leave it and choose whatever religion you like but don't spread hate! I hope everyone choose the right place where they will truly enjoy life but remember to respect all the other community's and religions.

I wasn’t criticizing! I was hoping that people would begin to list resources for him! I was relating to him strongly from my own experience with cancer. We see and hear about many organizations that are supposed to be helping cancer patients. But when we found that despite having “excellent” health insurance, the “co-pay” “balance bills” we received for my surgery and care from doctors and hospitals were enormous, and none of the large charities provided financial help to working women like me, it was awful. We didn’t need pink socks and we didn’t need pamphlets. I did not want to be financially worth more to my family dead than alive! (Life insurance) When the health insurance failed to pay for the 3-D mammograms needed in order to detect any cancer return at the earliest possible, treatable stage, I finally found a law group to help, and I led a class action suit to make sure that the primary health insurer in my state would at least be required to pay for 3-D mammograms for all women. The whole process took 2 1/2 years, but we won! Obviously, this was a few years ago now, as 3-D mammograms are now the standard, and covered by all insurers. My point is that the young man was straightforward in his difficulty with finding services that he really needs. We were told about a small local charity that provided cash grants for women like me, and we will forever be grateful. I hope that people keep pointing him to services he knows nothing about. I’m sincerely sorry if you felt that I was criticizing anybody’s community.

I feel truly sorry to hear how Joseph felt growing up in the ultra-orthodox community. I do want to say though, he does sound quite a bit lost. He's very intelligent but he is convinced that leaving his community will grant him a better life. As someone who's almost left community, what saved me was actually the fact that I was actually quite exposed to the "outside" world. He says once you leave there's no turning back, but actually most of current Jewish conversions are people seeking to join this very community he so badly wanted to leave. Contrary to what he's saying, that our customs are meaningless and over-restricting, it is actually what makes our community the majoritively happy place it is. In my harsh opinion, he hadn't suffered very much in the community as much as he was attracted to leaving it. Well I hope he finds happiness, yet I fear he will find it extremely difficult to find inner peace, knowing his former life contained so much more purpose and true happiness, rather that the glitz and glammer of western society and purposeless self-indulgence. He seems to partly still believe in Judiasm, there are so much more options within the Jewish community, why he threw it all off boggles me and bothers me. I wish I'd be able to speak to him, fully explain to him what he's giving up.

I think that Joseph has a backbone of solid steel and I shudder to imagine how courageous it was for him to leave the stringency of the haredi sect. To think that Joseph has never been streamed into normal schooling or the way of life as we know it and to attend University, is humbling and good for us to see and show us that we should never take anything for granted. I expect that Joseph has support hopefully from Hasidic people who also left the sect. It is heartbreaking to have to leave one's family and especially parents and not being able to see them again because one is shunned having chosen to leave the religion. I really feel for Joseph, but it gets better. I admire Joseph and I think that he is terribly intelligent which will serve him well in the future. However, he needs to know, not assume, the sources of why his community behaved as it did. Why did he throw out all religious beef if what he was objecting to was the excess of Satmar Hassidism? If you were abused by "religious" people, do you want to be religious? If you hate your religious abusers, it makes sense to hate the religion. What if you have homosexual feelings? You may not understand those feelings or want those feelings but they exist. Your community does not help you understand; only that it is perverted and wrong and sinful, an abomination (תועבה). Muslim here so i dont have any personal interest in advancing the Hasidic way of life or religion. But after watching so many videos on this channel, ive come to the conclusion that this is where you come to be educated on INDIVIDUALS' PERSONAL account of trauma/abuse. NOT where you come to be objectively educated about the cults/religions/systems Andrew puts in the titles. Most interviews are honestly void of hard facts or references to scripture or at leaat even scholarly interpretations. Theyre simply personal recollections of abuse. The people Andrew interviews rarely ever give reference to scripture, displaying their lack of knowledge of the system theyre criticising. Say it like it is then - "I was abused by a bunch of inhumane idiots - not necessarily the above-mentioned religion - just by a bunch of inhumane idiots who decided to put XYZ as the abuse label" Obviously its understood that Andrew is catering to a particular audience that probably already have an anti-religion sentiment to them regardless of reason so i understand his focus (be foolish for him to not serve his target market). However, i honestly think itd be much more productive and would be a testament to Andrews devotion to intellectual discourse, if he invited noted scholars/leaders from these cults/religions so that his audience can hear from the other side. A natural requisite to form an educated opinion about anything I'd say.

To the people debating family size and pressure to marry: Don't be hypersensitive to what Joseph describes. I have come across plenty of Muslim, Christian, and secular/atheist-wealthy families where there was intense family pressure to have "more than 6 children." Let's just leave it at that. This is true in societies where many people died in wars - not just in the families of Holocaust survivors; in many families in many parts of Africa; in many families that are of "special" ("aristocratic" or otherwise notable, including religiously notable) bloodlines. No one particularly pressured me, the emphasis in my childhood home was on education. But, yes, both parents were survivors of WW2 who had seen many of their family and friends, including close Jewish friends, tortured and murdered, dead in mass slaughter events, or under bombardment, fleeing, or on battlefields... And growing up I always imagined I would have 8 children. I am not Jewish; I am a traditional, ecumenical, not overly pious but certainly seriously observant Christian. I only had 3 children; stopped at 3 - could not imagine going through that again, plus simply we could not afford it. I look at my now adult children and 1 grandchild (from an unmarried daughter) and do not encourage them to rush to have children, or to have many children. Schools are getting worse and worse. Life is getting more and more expensive. The number of people experiencing some form of sexual violence (including from people they trust) is rising across the world. Parents need to take responsibility for keeping their own kids as safe as humanly possible: how many of us had children that we imagined would never experience any sexual violence? Does anyone want to have a child knowing that child will experience such harrowing trauma? At a young age? There are dangerous wars proliferating, that may explode into something bigger... Atrocities have become commonplace. Those are all very serious considerations that need to be factored in before anyone says: "Five kids? No problem!" My husband was/is an excellent, loving, attentive, hands-on father who also shares a lot of the cooking and was very involved during the childhood & teen years. Zero violence, zero accusatory shouting, etc. BUT we barely managed to have energy enough for 3: how could we possibly have managed to give 6 children the same attention? Or the "8" I fantasized about while reading the classics of the literary canon? A HAPPY HOME IS ONLY POSSIBLE IF YOU KNOW EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY WELL. You cannot get to know 10 individual children well! They cannot get to know each other well, either! Your household will be a constant meal-making and washing-up and laundry-time factory: there will be no time left for anything else! Not for sleep! Not for conversation! When people procreate out of an obsessive need to increase the numbers without actually improving the quality of the emotional and intellectual interaction, that is not actually serving God. That is serving your own personal vanity. That is saying: "I am so special, the world needs 100 of me." Yet no one alive today is that special, sorry! If you already have children, whatever your faith: NEVER hit them. If you hit your child, God will hit you. If you abuse your child, God will punish you. If you insist that someone marry a person they hardly know, you will most certainly receive the wrath of God, not the blessing of God. No one should be making children with someone they are not in love with, mutually in love with! And those children must be loved in return, they need your time. Time! Children are ideally spaced 3-4 years apart, so they have time to understand how the family grows, so there are FEWER rivalries and less chaos, and so the mother has time to recover from breastfeeding before she starts again, if she is healthy enough and has the means/inclination to add another child. Dragging a child into this world that you are not going to bother to make comfortable, keep fully secure in the knowledge they are respected and valued - and not exploited as some kind of workforce - is not any kind of "righteous act, virtue or sign of piety." It is cruel. Cruelty is never in alignment with any of God's Commandments - regardless of which specific religious tradition you adhere to or are descended from. Well done, brave Joseph! Yes, it shall get better, for you, certainly.

Just to fact check here, this might be how he personally felt and the way his family treated him but some things said are wildly exaggerated or completely false

Agree. As someone in the same community, I see more good than bad here. Of course, every community has its own problems. But as an whole I think it's a great community.

He spoke so well for someone whose second language is English and he should be very proud of that. Joseph was very brave and very clever in making his escape from the culty religion. I’m glad he saved himself and has been doing everything he can to make a better life for himself. I hope there’s some help offers in the chat, which knowing the amazing quality of viewers here I’m sure there would be. It was disappointing to hear that the foundations set up for cult survivors don’t have what he needs, such as learning to read and write. Although it could be a funding issue? Who knows? Let’s hope this guy gets a boost up and I’m sure he will rise to the challenge. Great interview Andrew! Thanks to you both for doing it. 🙏❤️

I’m confused on how he’s planning to get Swiss citizenship? Doesn’t one of his grandparents or parents have to be born in Switzerland in order for him to be eligible for Swiss citizenship? He said he’s 3rd generation born in the US, which means his grandparents, parents, and himself are all born in the US, therefore making him ineligible for Swiss citizenship by ancestry since his family has been in the US for several generations already? Or did I get something wrong? Unless he’s planning on actually moving over there and waiting 10 years to get citizenship - which would be hard since he doesn’t have a proper education or money. 😕

"In the summer of 1944, as a part of his efforts, Kasztner met repeatedly with Adolf Eichmann who was charged with deporting Hungary’s Jews. In late June, Kasztner succeeded in convincing Eichmann to spare the lives of some 1,700 Jews. Kasztner, along with a committee of other prominent Jews, drew up the list of those to be included in a transport that would leave Hungary for the safety of the neutral state of Switzerland. ....Unsurprisingly, Eichmann did not stay true to his word and instead of arriving in Switzerland, the transport stopped at Bergen-Belsen where the passengers were detained.... It was only on December 7, 1944, that the remaining 1,354 passengers were released from Bergen-Belsen and sent to their original destination." Source: National Library of Israel.

I know a lot of people who tried to help him out, regardless if he will come back and get religious or not, they just tried to help him find a job and make him stable, but he don't want anything. He just likes to sit in a homeless shelter and hate hacidic jews. It's very painful to see a guy in this situation struggling like that, but what it's much more painful is to see how a person put himself in a position that he would never had to be in. I know quite a few people who left the hasidic community and everyone of them just went their own ways trying to find good luck on there new society. Joseph is not trying to go anywhere, he's busy sticking around the hasidic community and keeps telling all kinds of hateful messages about them instead of just walking away from them. if it's not for you just go and find good luck somewhere else. Don't be busy to blame your past. From my perspective he's just a hateful selfish liar.

Thought so. There are so many people and orgs helping these kids/young adults. It’s a thankless job as all they often get is hate in return. But that never stops them as they know the kids are in pain. It’s been many many years since otd kids/adults were cast out. The pendulum has swung the other way. Too far sometimes. In my opinion we coddle them a bit too much, treat them like patients. Just respect their life choices but also expect them to act like responsible contributing members of society.

@Andrew gold. I like the way you are interviewing ppl, so i would suggest you should make a interview with a hasidic Jew, to get a clear vision on the hasidic community's. BTW i just finished listening to the interview, and what i can say for 💯 is that Joseph is an absolute liar!!!! I know his father very well, and i can say for a 💯 that he is far away from an abusive personality. His father tried more then a few times to help him, regardless if he is coming back or not!! Joseph im sorry to say but you need to be ashamed of yourself. There is One more thing I want to say. I know for a fact that he is lying about "smuggling into Canada", because if you're checking what it was the law in the covid times you can see that the law was if your parents are Canadian citizens you can come into Canada. so he had no reason to smuggle in because his father is a Canadian and his grandparents are still living right now Canada. He is just a teenager who is lying around for a bit publicity and attention.

Joseph is a delight. I'll admit I struggled to listen to him at some points but I kept reminding myself of where he came from and I made it to the end of the interview. I grew up in NY around the Hasidic community and even worked for them. I know how these people are. I wish you all the very best Joseph. It will get better! Edit to add: it occurred to me that for him, perhaps the best option would be to join the military? A lot of his needs could be taken care of that way.

For those facing homelessness, start working with state social workers. They will guide you towards resources. Food pantries will have free food for people struggling. Community Colleges have resources for homeless students. They can help find housing, help with books and supplies and help you find jobs.
