Great video Kyle! Regarding the railways in Ireland. There was a craze for railway building in the UK in the 19th century when Ireland was part of the UK (the world's first dedicated commuter line was in Dublin). Loads of lines were built anywhere and everywhere, including by competing companies often building competing - and redundant - lines. However, after WW2, as roads and cars improved and car ownership increased, railways were seen as being on the way out (like the canals before them). A great many lines were closed. Too many as it turned out! That was what happened in Britain anyway, and I think the story was similar in Ireland.

Similar building, mergers, and abandonment in the US rail network as well
@rogersmith7396
@rogersmith7396 Год назад
Similar in the US. Cars trucks and planes made rail obsolete along with infrastructure building. Few passenger trains in the US. I also think their are government subsidies for trucking which puts rail at a disadvantage. A lot of abandoned rail lines have been turned into bike paths. They hope to make the system coast to coast. See "Goat Canyon Rail and trestle". A non sense railroad built in the 20s with no economic viability. See also Alpine Tunnel, CO.
@rogersmith7396
@rogersmith7396 Год назад
KC has a huge rail station built around WWI which was one of the busiest in the country and peaked in WWII. It was abandoned for decades recently turned into a type of museum.. A lot of the giant switch yards here have been torn out. Still have an old rail bridge over the Missouri river that is raised for barge traffic. Built in early 20th century. The auto lanes have been removed.
@Number69

Let us not also forget they tore up the tram/ light rail in Dublin midway through 20th century then we paid a few hundred million recently to relay the track... with different guages 🤦‍♂️

7:46 In reality Ireland has even less railway lines than on the map. Some of them aren't used any more while others have been turned into bicycle greenways. Many of our railways sadly closed in the 1960's due to increased car dependency. Gaelic Football and Hurling are Ireland's national sports. I'd really recommend looking up videos of them. Europe's 3rd largest stadium (Croke Park in Dublin) is filled every year for the All-Ireland finals between county teams. Rugby, soccer and golf are also very popular in Ireland.

Crime is higher when it's warm because people aren't hanging around outside when it's cold. I'm always glad when it's either raining or cold at night because then, the neighborhood kids won't be out wandering. They aren't necessarily up to any criminal activities, but they are never exactly quiet, either, and when it's 12:30 am and I'm trying to sleep, it gets old really fast. I'm on a corner lot and the road beside me is one of the darker areas of the subdivision, so kids sometimes hang around.

I am not surprised by the reduction of Railway lines in Ireland, it's the same thing that has happened here in Canada. The government stopped propping up spur lines and the major railways either shuttered or privatized many, especially here in the western prairie provinces. Many small towns have become either little hamlets or just out and out ghost towns after the tracks where torn up and the grain elevators closed and where torn down and replaced with large concrete grain terminals. The local highways have paid the price with many in poor to middling shape due to the high volume of trucks transporting the grains and goods further away to get them to market. The prairie sentinels as the old town elevators were called because you could see them from quite the distance are few and far between. Now days people want things delivered the next day and that isn't possible with rail service.
@garyholt8315

very sad that in both alberta and Saskatchewan everyone is moving into the large urban areas and large chunks of both provinces are mostly abandoned. the rail network gets smaller and smaller.

As a person who has lived in Ireland for Five years, I can confirm that traveling in this Country can be problematic lol. I think I'm correct in saying that Dublin airport is the only Capital City airport in Europe without a train station next to it. As a result, a 40 min trip by car can take up to 3 hours on a bus as it has to go through all the towns for pick ups. Taxi's and parking fees are insane, so it's usually the only viable option for a lot of people.

Although not being fully to scale (as it's a game) it'll be interesting to hear your take on how the map looks as well as maybe some of the scenery the game has and comparing it to real life. Come to think about it, it could be a whole series on the channel. The current Dumbarton Bridge is NOT the 'Oldest bridge over the Bay'. It opened in 1980 and replaced the original built in the 1920s you referenced. It is also is NOT the older "bridge". The Dumbarton Rail Bridge just south of the Dumbarton vehicle bridge was built in 1910 and is listed as the oldest structure spanning the Bay. The Rail Bridge can still be seen with the swing bridge portion open. There has been talk off and on about trying to use that again for a commuter train, but more likely it would be using the right of way and completely replacing the actual bridge. (assuming it ever became a real project). The original 1927 passenger vehicle bridge still has portions on both sides which are used as piers.
