Watch PART ONE here: • Examining Our Extant C...
We're having a look at our extant corsets, to show you some of the details and surprising features common to corsetry at the turn of the last century. How do you tell if your corset is baleen or steel? Were Victorian corsets thick, or thin? Were fine finishings always the norm?

This is so informative. It's surprising how light weight the steel bones and busks are. Thank you for sharing this!

I wonder if in the first corset, the extra boning was removable for the purpose of customizing the fit of the corset to the individual? So if a lady wanted more flexibility in one spot, she could remove the extra boning pieces, and leave them in where she wanted more stiffness/support?

Are they all double layer corsets? Or just a single layer of cotton sateen?

Were machines of the time designed to reverse stitch? Love these videos. Thank you for the education!

Majority of them, no. To 'backstitch' you need to leave the needle in the goods and turn the goods around. There were a few treadles that could backstitch, but I think they were made in Germany.

My mother was born in 1905, so my grandmother would most likely have worn those.

Soufflé Girl they’re not fully boned all the way down. It’s pretty simple.
