Examining the Joel Edmundson signing 

Appreciate the Podcast. I think one number not a lot of people mention is ice time. Look at Joel Edmonson's ice time more so in the playoffs. Post season he's pushing 20 minutes which is a 1st or 2nd line defenseman? To me, that tells a lot about the type of player he is.

I wouldn't omit the fact that there were four (4) other teams in on the Edmundson signing, these included FLA and the NYR (NSH and COL apparently as well). Do we think that all of these teams are staffed with "bad" and "stupid" GMs and player evaluators? Just seems odd to not mention that.

He will play 2 line mins

I believe they gave JE the contract he got because Blake and the front office were unhappy with the Kings being pushed around last season. All the signings point to getting the team tougher. Which I believe they achieved. JE contract should have been incentive laden. Especially since he has never finished a full season. Toughness is something this team really needs and they added that. The complaining is unnecessary.

Edmundson was quite effective in his brief Toronto stint. He’s a nasty bit of business - but that contract is rich.

The collective Insanity over the Edmondson signing is way more disturbing than the signing itself

The questionable part of this contract is the AAV. Ideally, you'd hope it were about $1M - $1.5M less than what was offered but if it's true he had other suitors then it's not just paying him but also making sure other teams didn't. To that point, for all the Rob Blake haters saying this is just another bad signing, another team would have signed him and likely not faced the same backlash Blake did. ...I know those negative feelings are lumped in with other recent trades and dealings but every trade, signing, etc., has to be looked at it through its own lens. I will say that I was banging the "Zadorov to LA" drum for about two years and, seeing as that didn't materialize, it was crucial for the Kings to get someone with size and veteran experience. Do I think Edmundson is the only guy that could have fit that mold? No. But, I do think he was one of the better options available for the role LA needs him to play. I'd like to see the 5-man unit of: Turcotte - Byfield - Jeannot Edmundson - Spence With the idea being that Jeannot and Edmundson are there to act as personal bodyguards for the kids (particularly Turcotte and having Edmundson literally watching his back [on the left side] insures Turc's safety). This would be the third line where you can hopefully maximize Edmundson's time on the ice without over playing him and exposing his faults (ie cross checking and the penalties that come with them). ...A couple years back, when I was playing one of the EA NHL games (I think NHL 20), I added Edmundson to my Kings team in GM mode, signing him to a 4-year deal (oddly enough). The game defaulted to putting him on my second pairing and the team never seemed to get better. HOPEFULLY this isn't the case in real life!

Why does our Hall of Fame GM struggle the most creating a line up for the exact same position he played ?

My concern is years 3 and 4 as Edmundson hasn't played a full season in a minute but I think if healthy and that's a big if he's the perfect partner for Clarke as Clarke got hit ALOT in the AHL and now he's in a league with guys like Tom Wilson and the like so he'll need some sort of protection. If Rempe ever got ahold of Clarke he might kill him so at least Edmundson will provide some sort of insurance with I'll guess Englund waiting in Ontario if he does indeed get hurt again.

Edmundson has not been a regular presence in the roster lineup..not sure if that is injury related or not.. but seemed an odd signing based on that. GM Blake favors players based on physical appearance ..large tall imposing above actual personality and performance fit.

problem is Flake doesnt care about the term cause he gone in a year.. Why make it easy on the next GM? blake cares about blake

When almost every Kings fan has been calling for more grit and physicality for a number of seasons now, when everyone could see they were routinely being pushed around out on the ice, no one expected our GM to overpay by this much to address this concern but he had no choice because he needs Edmundson physicality to offset Clarke's offensive prowess. Price was one thing but the term as well? That some fans want to validate this because the team has had this need for so long but those that are are thinking with their hearts, not their heads. Intelligently managing a team's cap is imperative for a team to be successful and Blake seems lacking in this area.

From an outsider looking in the Kings are weaker today than the team that made the playoffs last year. Seems to me they are going in the wrong direction and will be hard pressed to make the playoffs this upcoming season. The team seems to be kind of in between were the older players are no lomger good enough and aging rapidly and the young players that the jury is still out on. The young guys are not of the same quality of the Kings that won the cup. I think that a rebuild is not that far off.

This is 3 years in a row where Blake made a really bad signing. Peterson, PLD, and now this one. BTW h Ede got rid of PLD's $8.5m salary, and now has $9.1m tied up in Edmundson and Kuemper.

Only reason is to protect the kids like turcotte / clarke maybe Thomas and Englund gets his ass whooped each time he tries to protect a teammate. Maybe also the reason we got jeannot

Englund is the guy you mentioned, young and improving. Edmundson is over the hill. He has slowed, never was that good. Yes, he has a nasty streak, but the guy sits in front of the net and watches the puck and just lets guys setup inside of him for deflections and tap ins. Horrible job Rob Blake, you are destroying this team.

Look at the precedent this sets from current Kings. If Edmonson is worth that salary and that term what is QB or Spence worth. That's the questions their agents will be asking Blake. GM keeps painting himself into corners, embarrassing.

I'm not that upset about the Edman signing. I guess I used up all my energy being mad all last season about the PL trade and his subsequent and predictably bad season he had the was 100% his fault. If Edman stays healthy, then it's really not that bad. 3.8 mil cap for a guy who can shut down the opposing top players, is physical, and can throw some hands may be worth it in the end if he stays in the lineup, which he didn't seem to be able to do in a little while. Englund played well enough to where I was like, okay, he can stay in the lineup as a 6th man. He has his limitations, but he did improve, but Edman should he able to play more minutes and help up on the PK quite a lot. Just stay healthy.

The AHLers have to step up with the likes of Thomas, Turcotte, and Fagemo. Clarke will be a season older, so he should hold his own and hopefully beefed up. D Corp, although swift puck movers, are getting beat down during puck battle, particularly behind the net. Teams that didn't make last year's playoff or were in the cusp will sneak up against the Kings. Kaliyev plus picks for Trouba.

There was a bidding war over Edmundson. Fans have been crying that the kings are soft, no they are crying that there was an over pay for the grit. Eddie’s show has become an echo chamber for disgruntled fans.

Let all the toxic armchair GMs chime in. Cater to the numbers i guess. I will wait to judge until a game is played. Everyone hated on Englund before he played a shift and then he was a cult hero for a part of last season. There are a ton of bad contracts this free agency season. Wah wah wah its locked on kings.
