After MONTHS I finally have my hands on the Persona 5 Art Book. Join me as I go through the book and uncover all the fascinating secrets held within, learn at least one thing about Persona 5 or your money back. @ me pls; @fitherfith
Status update; there's a bit more missing from the book than I initially thought. Noticeably absent is a multi page interview with Soejima which I would really like to read so if anybody has a translation please send it my way. Also gone are all the Battle UI things, and the occasional odd sketch is gone. If you care purely about having the art you might want to look into getting the Japanese version, but if you're more interested in Soejimas comments on the art probably get the english version.
The only other big thing that's gone is the storyboard for the intro. But I agree with if you just want the art get the Japanese but his comments are enough to justify getting the English version.
Luckily I Imported the Japanese Art Book along with the Guide and OST a month or so after the Japanese 20th Anniversary Edition launched (I also grabbed that, couldn't wait the extra months for the English Release at the time lol)
That is my favorite sketch of the entire book, love it. I feel it should have been used in the animated scene when the protag meets her. Since it was raining she could have undone her hair to fix it.
Lightning takashi I like to imagine that when he's not wearing the glasses outside of palaces he's just blind as shit. Like during the rained in festival when they insisted he didn't wear his glasses. Can't see a thing.
I complettely guessed that Akechi was supposed to be a Nijima:the red eyes, the manners...at one point I thought it was gonna be a plot twist along with the true culprit thing
40:30 I think that's suppose to be an early sketch of Caroline and Justine. You have a more free style character with the white dress (plus she has Lavensa's butterfly hairpiece) and the more business type character giving it that duality. Also glad to see my donations went to more weeb stuff. Keep it up.
It's quite telling of Goro's true view of his "justice" that Robin Hood and his Prince attire more say "Look at me do good" rather than "I am a good person". If i'm not mistaken, the true reason he is a "Detective Prince" is to get admiration and love from others, a more "Look at me, i'm a good guy! Love me!" sort of image than someone like Naoto who is a Detective Prince due to her genuine desire to find the truth and be a good person. I like Akechi's true personality more myself due to how honest and raw it is; he's no longer "Prince of Justice" with a superhero-like Persona, he's more a "Dark Knight" with a Persona representing chaos and disorder, which is more fitting for him. I always loved that subtle detail about the contrast between Robin Hood and Loki: One represents not only what he pretends to be, but what he wants to be, while the other represents what he truly is. In the Thieves Den, he says that he doesn't like Loki being on display, which shows he's ashamed of it; A persona is a manifestation of someone's shadow turned into power, so the fact that Goro hates others seeing Loki shows that he is shameful of his true self. Sorry for going on so long, but i felt the need to share that.
I've really gotta wonder what a Persona game would be like of Soejima had free reign to do whatever he wanted with the art design. I feel like we'd have a pretty cracked out cast.
Fither, about the whole "Yusuke was initially going be from a previous game's highschool, look at his shoes": The Gekkoukan Highschool students have the same shoe type, at least the main cast, you can never really get a good look at the other students. I noticed while examining P3 Dancing's models and happened to recall what was said in this video. The main entrance in Gekkoukan even specializes in storing those types of dress shoes in an oriental fashion. Maybe the Bay Area isn't that far from Tokyo in-universe, or Kosei was really gonna be Gekkoukan at one point. However, I think everyone would've lost their shit if they saw a blue hair, bob-cut trimmed student in a Gekkoukan uniform approaching Ann, if you get what I'm saying.
The cover of this artbook is my desktop wallpaper, which makes watching this video so hard without wondering "what is this huge thing on desktop?!". love this art to death, true comic book vibe while "steal" looking like persona (yeah, I should be ashamed of that pun).
Personally I believe they avoid saying fictional female characters' weights because people with eating disorders obsess over weight numbers and such thin bodies, and seeing these already unrealistic females really messes with the mind of someone with an eating disorder i know its like "why specifically female?" and because its mostly females who are prone to developing one (sorry for bad english)
True, if you calculate the BMI of some girls they are clearly underweight. For example, in the anime Lovely Complex the protagonist is 172cm tall and 50kg. When i had depression i didn't almost eat and measured just the same, with the same weight they almost send me to a mental hospital (BMI=16,9!).
Personally I believe we shouldn't create anything and put all people into little sensory deprivation boxes to protect them from anything the world has to offer. PS: There is nothing unrealistic about the figures of any of these girls.
Joker with a scarf and top hat is the silliest and somehow coolest thing that I've ever seen, now I just feel cheated that we don't have gentleman thief Joker fight cowboy gunslinger Akechi.
This is great. I bought the Japanese version online a while back without knowing there was an English release, and looking at the art is good enough but hearing all this stuff is actually great, Thanks.
It looks like they were planning a female protagonist route in Persona 5, which similarly, Persona 3 had the same idea when the orignal game was in development, but unlike P3 where they were able to incorporated the idea for a future rerelease, the idea for P5 however never ended up seeing the light of day due to the final story and game being finalized with only the male protagonist in mind. So, when it came to the expanded rereleased, Persona 5 Royal, what was included instead is a brand new female character who is a new party member whom her appearance is taken a lot from Joker, mostly, her Phantom Thief form, and that is Kasumi Yoshizawa.
Thanks so much for this! Because of you I was finally able to decide which to get between the Japanese and English versions, and unsurprisingly I chose the former
I was lucky enough to get it for Christmas one year and was surprised to discover that the first 15 pages of the book were printed twice(!!) So it’s like I have an extra rare version of an already uncommon art book
I think it's better that it's soft cover because it's easier for people who want to use it as references, then it will allow it to do it easier and stuff.
This guy's voice is so good at talking about flaws and problems in things, seriously, hearing his voice talking about the failing attempts of showing us the book, so seriously, he should be a diplomat!
I feel like that beta art of the garage could've been the concept for P5's Velvet Room cuz the figure behind the car kinda looks like a scribble of Igor.
Omg Makoto’s braid in her hair is a headband !? Finally my question has bin answered on how she does it, because if it where real hair it would be impossible to get a braid like that
aljino lambino Huh really? That's kinda neat. I almost find it hard to imagine though. I wonder if they intentionally cast the English voice of Char as a reference to the Japanese casting.
actually i recognized it first in the japanese audio. then saw his boss fight, right he's definitely char. and then when i heard his english voice, wait a minute, this is char's voice too!
aljino lambino Same for me and the English voice. I like to follow him on Twitter because he likes to do cool stuff with his fans like live tweet during Toonami airings.
Just wanted to add in that Nazca lines are in Peru, in the Nazca desert, which is located in the Peruvian department of Ica (zones here are diveded in departments, something similar to states I guess)
33:54 ngl the expression mainly reminds me of ms. ideal from P2:IS (mainly from her insane portrait) they're both adults who get in the main plot, sae being the prosecutor who helps joker and ms. ideal being one of the candidates for the ln lak'ech (which states that if a woman who's named maya, she'll be the factor of the world's end) and insists maya to be the candidate for the book
i literally thought adachi was not to be trusted specifically because he was an idiot.... they dont make idiots detectives so i always thought he was hiding something. i remember thinking to myself "this guys silly smile is going to turn into an evil smirk i bet" and when it did i was so hype that i called it, i still accidentally got the bad ending though..... but i literally did not see akechi being a traitor ... i knew adachi was not to be trusted but for some reason couldn't tell akechi was the black mask lol. I also based my judment of adachi on duffy from scary movie 1 lmaoo, its always the guys that want you to THINK their dumb, at least thats how i saw it....
He doesn't wear his glasses during the Fireworks festival or (Spoiler Alert) when he goes home at the end, so it's kinda assumed he doesn't need them and simply wears them to look inconspicuous during his probation. That's also why his hair is unkempt: It's thought that he keeps it that way to, again, keep himself inconspicuous, he's not exactly looking to stand out while in the real world, that's why while in the metaverse, he's a flamboyant show off; he's able to be his "real self" while steal hearts.
The description for the eyeglasses accessory you get as a placeholder item in the start of the game says that they are "hipster glasses" meant to look attractive
When you said that akechi mask was inspired by plague doctors I was spazzing the fuck out because if i was a phantom thief I would also want a Black Plague doctor mask and I also love akechi as a character
15:03 so he wanted to implement that he's creepy by designing a specific pair of shoes, I honestly don't know what Soejima was drinking while designing these characters.. But I want it!
Perhaps the sketch with the garage and map are something made for the original draft of the script, witch i believe was the MC traveling the world, or so i read in An article.
