I agree. This, Manhunt, Halo 2. Silent Hill 2, Its right before games got really good looking. They still look they are supposed to be fun. Actually Ratchet and Clank has held on to that ps2 magic a little bit.
Or just have both. That's what these old games can't offer. They can be fun, but not look good (except for a couple of hyperstylized games). Modern games have the potential for both. But even then there is no excuse when MGS3 existed on the PS2. Truth is you nostalgia blind people just call anything you liked as a kid fun and then somehow make a nonsensical connection between graphics and fun game experiences yourself. Seriously, this nostalgic nonsense... PS2 games for the most part looked absolutely horrible. And before I hear any deflections about how cartoon graphics or the like looked always good, there are games right now with cartoon graphics or stylized artstyles which look far better than anything from the PS2 era without being hyper realistic too.
Yeah I don't care too much about graphics as opposed to other variables in a game. A polished turd is still a turd. I try to get into the new games but they all seem so uninspired(for the most part, obviously there are exceptions and you shouldn't generalize and blah blah blah) and I keep coming back to the games of old. That was such a damn fun time 😊
51:00 something I LOVE about this bossfight is that, if you're playing with good morality, Carmen will aid you in the fight by literally showing up to block enemy attacks, that always felt like such a cool turn.
Really? I played through both games at least 3 times each (if not more) to get good, bad, and neutral endings. I don't remember that though. But it's been nearly 20 years, so there's that.
I played Suffering as a child, I didn't understand the story because I didn't understand English, but I still completed the game several times. Thanks to you, today I know the story.
Fun fact: Dr. Killjoy's appearance and personality are modeled primarily on legendary horror actor Vincent Price, who played both monsters and mad scientists throughout his career and was easily recognized by his mellifluous Mid-Atlantic accent and a pencil mustache. Dr. Killjoy was voiced by John Armstrong. Cheers 🍻😂
The Suffering is indeed an underated classic horror games made by the defunct Midway. I mean Stan Winston designed the monsters in this game, and not to mentioned it has that Clive Barker vibes all over it. Weird that no one has ever did a remaster port of these games.
The Tommy Gun isn't really an odd choice when you consider the portion of the backstory where the island/jail/whichever (I don't remember off the top of my head) was used for bootlegging and mob activity back in Prohibition. It's implied or outright stated there were caches of guns and stuff left over from then.
Love your videos and the direction to channel has been going! We always seem to be on the same page / wavelength When it comes to gaming! The suffering is one of my favorite game series from the p s two era and it doesn't get enough respect in my opinion!
I already know about the suffering but damn how is it’s like a once only done in a franchise the idea of a horror game being taken place in a prison sounds like a amazing idea
the rats are made using billboards. cheaper than 3d models for a ton of rats, think of them as 2d images that change frames depending on which trajectory from the object your at and rotate to face you.
Ernesto was my favorite companion. He has a really nice voice. His dialog sounded sincere. Killjoy was really great too. I was happy to see his character return in Ties That Bind. The Suffering is not only an underrated series, but also has some good voice work, especially for a game from it's era.
The Suffering 2 is kinda mid for me. I like the first one more. The monster lores of how each of them came into existence and the hidden mystery of the island. Its funny even though the island has many proves of supernatural incidents, whoever who wants to built the prison in that island is an ignorant fool.
Loved these games. Resident Evil and silent hill keep getting remakes left and right, so if they remade or even just remastered the suffering today it’s a safe bet it would do well. What would be great is if they did that and it revived the series with new entries. They can still do more with the premise they had if they wanted to. Have more locations and more monsters based on those specific locations histories
this game has always been one of my favorites for monster design, love when they do monsters that just feel overwhelming and impossible to survive against
The Suffering was so fun. I remember staying up all night with a buddy taking turns when one of us would die. Playing with all the lights off added a whole other level to the horror.
@@Alkal1nes It's funny because the game was underrated when it released, as everyone just believed it to be a cod clone (as they were many at the time). But in the era of youtube essays and retrospectives, it became the go to game for youtubers to be like "Guys this game is actually nuts and stuff". So It went all the way to overrated.
there was also the neutral ending were you accidentally kill your wife then one of your sons fell in the bath tub and drowned and the other son fell out of the window
I absolutely loved this game back in the day. It was one of those games I saw on the shelves at the rental store and ignored for a long time, and then one day my brother and I gave it a shot. We spent all night playing it and needing to take a break now and then to ease our nerves.
A black protagonist was pretty rare too. From that to the rating, issues of murder, rape, esp involving kids, these devs took a huge gamble and deserve props!
There was a point where the United States Army owned the rights to this game and area 51 the games became free but still the last people I expected to own the rights to two PS2 games
If early nineties until late 2000s was the vulgar times, then we have to live in the wimpy, no skill, nothing unsettling era now, where women should not look good in video games. 🙂
I still play it on the computer, and I consider it one of the best horror games ever made, the monster design is totally amazing, sick and bizarre, I would love to see these monsters in high quality today, they would be the perfect representation of bizarreness
They're very awesome indeed. For other cool monster designs, have a look at the Zeno Clash games and Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. Creature designs range from stuff from the pages of medieval monster woodcuts to prehistoric animals to... well, whatever the heck the protagonist of Clash: AoC is. (the dev studio, ACE Team, made another lovely game with strange bizarre creatures by name of The Eternal Cylinder)
It sucks that the PC port is utter garbage. I went insane streaming this game a couple years ago 'cause the PC version breaks at several critical moments. I had to sequence break to start the warden boss fight (or whomever that is on the turret in the prison in the first game, it's warden, right?) I got stuck permanently then after because my companion needed to trigger certain events for me to move on and the triggers were just busted so I literally couldn't proceed forward. I wanted to get into this series so bad since it seems like something I would have LOVED as a kid having grown up playing Dead Rising, Dead Space, and other action-horror games. Your video is super good and was a nice revisit. I'm hoping to track down a set of console copies some day so I can finish both games myself. I own them on GoG, but I didn't wanna play "Ties That Bind" without beating the first game so they have sat collecting digital dust.
Hey I did a Let's Play of these games! I covered every outcome and morality choice in it, plus a pure neutral follow up run for Ties That Bind. They're amazing games. I got the voice actor for Ranse Truman to come back and voice all his unspoken lines, including loading screen ones! He had an interesting story about his role where he was just kinda there and thus was casted. He also did the narration for the movie G-Force, and had a similar tale! His name is David Markus, he goes by The Vocal Chameleon, and it really fits because he's in so many things and I never know it's him. He's a really cool guy, check him out if you get the chance!
The Suffering is probably tied with F.E.A.R. for my favorite action horror games. I love the creative monster designs The Suffering has. They serve as great metaphors and help flesh out the world and atmosphere tremendously.
To me personally, i always loved the suffering ties that bind more than the first one. I was more focused on the action Rather than horror, i never once died in Ties that Bind since i was already skilled at any gameplay i play against. There's also cheat codes that can help Greatly that is on Game FAQs online on PS2 and the OG Xbox, except for the PC which didn't have
I thought the story line for the 2nd game was actually quite embarrassing compared to the 1st game. I also hated the changes they made to the gameplay. It made the gameplay way too annoying. That being said, I'm thankful I played it.
Really liked 1 over 2 because all the gameplay changes. The max payne kinda gameplay was much better. Though that pimp boss enemy design is really fucking good
I remember liking the game in 2005 when I played it, I played both a few years ago and hated my experience... now thinking I should give them another chance
I remember renting the first Suffering and enjoying it. I knew of the sequel but never got around to it. Recently, both games were on sale dirt cheap on GOG, and I've been replaying them. Definitely some fun action horror titles. I would love to see a remaster, remake, or even a new game. Too bad Surreal Software was absorbed by Monolith (the guys who made those Mordor games.)
I never liked The Suffering and it's always made me feel like a crazy person, since everyone always talks so highly of it. I've tried multiple times to enjoy it, thinking the problem was just me and I needed to give it more of a chance but it just doesn't click with me and I don't quite know why.
The music for the original game is excellent, some of my favorite combat tracks. Don't like Ties That Bind that much; Its visuals is the only positive in the game for me.
I remember first playing this on a Xbox demo disc and a few years ago I got the real deal! This along with silent hill is one of my favorite horror games to play!
