Years ago I built a 4 car garage. I over time got the tools and equipment. I loved making old stuff run and like new. Then I had a stroke where I can do nothing. That's why I love your videos cause of what you do and your ingenuity of things you make. I love my life through you now. Thank you

Had to watch ADS’ video before watching yours. Man they did a hell of a job on your pump, that thing looks brand new. And that oil cooler, the cost of the got it from Deutz… Holy!!! 5 grand for an oil cooler is nuts. They are definitely proud of that, luckily ADS was able to get a good deal on one. Great video man! Stay safe out there and send some of that rain to south Ga.

John, the hole in the socket is to line up with the BB in the end of your socket wrench, or extention. It helps to keep the socket ON your wrench or extention. Which is why you will see some socket wrenches with a button at the back of the wrench to release the spring tention from the BB. Cue the music from "The more you know" LOL

While I will never repair a Deutz diesel as an extreme amateur mechanic and in my remaining years, you are such an inspiration in terms of perseverance, ingenuity and networking. Wow, just wow.

It’s very kind of you to look after that poor old 360, I’m sure it will do its best to help you in your work when it’s all back together. Also a big thumbs up to Area Diesel for sending you the fuel filter/sight glass, its quite obvious to me that they love their work to be spot on by doing that. All the best from England.

For that line I’d have silver soldered a sleeve of larger tube over it. It’s a very quick method and doesn’t require as much heat as brazing would. With a jewelers torch I have fixed the spring in the back of the drivers seat in my truck without messing with its temper.

When I saw where the leak was, my heart sank into my stomach. Brutal.

Besides your ingenuity, I really appreciate your commitment to a project. A normal my would have bagged it by now.

I have used weatherstrip glue fir gaskets for 50 years. A trick that I learned from journeyman truck techs that I worked with when I was young.

Just a tip I was shown,put a piece of copper wire in the tube about the size of the inside diameter. It keep the hole open and gives you a backer to weld. When done just pull the copper wire out as the weld won't stick to copper.

Without knowing, you'd never believe you were working inside the guts of a machine larger than my living room instead of the engine bay of a Morris Mini. Hats of to you sir!!

Using the mirror is a life hack I should have thought but never have. Thx for that. I use a piece of gorilla tape attached to my sockets to make sure I can retrieve them. I love this excavator series!

Hi Jon, thanks for sharing your techniques on fastening washers and nuts to “hard-to-access “ stud bolts using a socket and wobble extension. I’ve found that wrapping masking tape around the socket and extension aids in keeping them together during withdrawal.

Hey John, On the oil hose that broke behind the injection pump. You can take an angle grinder with a cut off wheel and cut through the crimped on collar, pry it off and then pull the banjo fitting out of the old hose. Take the banjo fitting and old hose to your hydraulic shop. They should be able to match up the hose and using a new crimp on collar reuse the old banjo fitting. No need to cobble all the JIC fittings and hydraulic hose to make what you need. They just wanted to sell you a $100.00 hose. Permatex Aviation gasket sealer does not harden Permatex use to make a part A and part B one was hardening and the other was non hardening. To glue gaskets on a surface use 3M weatherstrip adhesive, we call it gorilla snot in the business. Hi tack and Aviation adhesives are excellent for cooling system gaskets. Using RTV or silicone on gaskets, the RTV acts like a lubricant and the gasket can squish out when you tighten the bolts. Sometimes you have to see using your fingers instead of your eyes. You make a mental picture of what you are doing, close your eyes and feel your way around. I've had to do that many times. And on breaking the mirror, you're supposed to get 7 years of bad luck but I have a good lawyer who can get that time reduced.

The hose connector hitting the block preventing the seal is really a simple fix you could do right there. You have a lathe just make yourself a steel spacer and put your copper washer on each side of it and use a longer bolt or if you couldn't get a longer bolt you might be able to turn the head so that it will go deeper through the banjo and the spacer.

It just amazes me that you are able to get away with doing the difficult things you do without having the fates intervene and ruin the job at hand. When it comes to using mirrors, use 2 mirrors. 1 will reverse image rotation an the second mirror will reverse again giving you normal view. Takes a little fiddling to get them lined up perfectly but it’s worth It !!!!! Used a lot in welding!! Great job , sad about old line breaking.. Thanks

John, Your fearless, how have you made it this far in life with all your fingers & toes still, you'll just take on anything. Between the injection pump rebuild and all of the maintenance you've done if you would have had an on-site case mechanic come and work on that thing it would have been a good $10 -$12,000 and even then he probably would have had to have made three trips and 6 to 8 weeks for parts in between. I'm not even at the end of the video yet but I'm pretty sure this thing should run a lot better cuz I could tell when it started up that the injectors were pretty weak on it and it was running pretty low on power so like I said in my first post that thing will have a lots of power and can dig through some stuff like you wouldn't believe if it's at good operating condition which you seem to keep everything in so excited to see how it all turns out and thanks for bringing us along on your Odyssey.

My experience has been minimal to your endeavors. I find it pretty easy to disassemble things, but I will usually drop something and be clueless how it came off, making it near impossible to get back together. As always, I am throughly impressed with your efforts.

Oh damn...that is a LOT of oil leaking out...and in a really difficult spot. @53:33 Is it possible to use a small grinding wheel or something...like maybe a Dremel...to cut back the cast casing enough to clear the hex that's hitting it?

Watching the back side nut and washer work taught me that the county fair skills games would be good training for a farmer/mechanic.

So glad to hear you confirm the myth that an extension does not give an accurate torque. Lot of folks still buy into that fallacy. A note on the dipstick tube: Shorten the dipstick by the same exact amount you shorten the tube.

Hi Jon, In the aircraft industry when fitting an awkward nut we use 1/2" masking tape, sticky side to the socket

What I have done to hold gaskets, washers and such in place is fine thread. Tie through the holes. The hole in sockets is for the ball on ratchet, extension to pop into. This helps the sockets stay on. If your tools are worn then I wrap a piece of tape around socket and extension. Works for me.

Good video, no unnecessary blah blah, all good honest content.

Just thought I’d throw you a hint from a dealer mechanic, on those hard to place gaskets find similar bolts and cut the heads off then grind a slot in the shaft and use them as guide bolts. You install them as studs first then put everything into place and use a screwdriver and magnet to remove the place keeper studs and replace with the regular bolts.

That pump and those injectors look fabulous

the mirror and hard places to reach reminds me of working on the F-16... did that for 12 years... be proud you don't have to safety wire it... I can do it by feel at this point but it makes the nut and washer seem like child's play..

@ 31:55 - A company called Pacific Oil Cooler Service in La Verne, California specializes in overhaul or repair of these types of coolers. As rare as that thing is DON’T throw it away. It is repairable. And, they do nice work on every type of cooler from aircraft to trucks to heavy equipment.
