In the Appalachian mountains, we terrace the mountains near the roads and highways. A metal mesh type of fencing is put in place with larger gravel behind it to prevent the terraces from eroding. It's not a bad look.

You have stone walls supporting the old terraces and, as the old folk who built them knew, these prevent landslips. Has anyone talked to you about retention netting for the slopes between each of the new terraces? EDIT: I see others have mentioned this already, and gabions too. The latter are large steel mesh baskets filled with stones - of which you have plenty!

Leave the bottom door closed! It will keep the rats out. You will also need to water your compost in the summer since you are in such a dry arid climate. I never watered compost until I moved to Oregon. The moist eastern parts of the US have ample water, so compost doesn’t need watered. Watering the compost also helps to deter the rats, they like to make tunnels in the dark, dry contents of a compost pile. Another thing I learned living in Oregon. I like that the base of your composter has holes for air flow. A compost pile needs layers of food scraps covered with dry leaves or hay, or some other dry carbon materials, and lots and lots of moisture. The pile needs 6x as much carbon as it does green or nitrogen rich materials. In the fall I would make a large pile of dried leaves right next to the compost pile so when I added the food scraps I could cover them immediately to keep the smell and the bugs at bay. Cats can kill rats when they’re small, but an adult large rat can put a hurting on a cat. Found that out the hard way too. Poor kitty. I love your terraces! Now I know where the rock came from for the original terrace walls. You guys are really transforming your property! I admire your vision.

The terraces are awesome & will be great for your property in so many ways. I am Australian & Eucalyptus oil is so versatile. your idea of making use of the remaining trees is a great idea. Eucalyptus oil is great for clearing the head etc for colds . It has great uses for cleaning, a great natural bug repellent & so much more. I used a water soluble eucalyptus water soluble solution to clean mould off an outdoor blind more than a month ago & the mould has not returned. Eucalyptus trees can be dangerous too, they loose limbs & just fall over very easily. They are also called widow makers. love watching the progress of your property. Cheers Helen

The landscape is dynamic on so many different timescales. Trees are just slow plants. Right kinds, right places, right time, etc. You just have to take a thirty year outlook instead of a thirty week one. Except, now year after year, above and below ground, the overall ecosystem you're creating is steadily beginning to improve. Good on you. All the best.

Really enjoying the stamp you are putting on the mill and surrounding areas. Wonderful to see the logs being reused. ❤

Wow, wow! The terraces are amazing. Everything is looking great!!!. I agree you’ll be much safer without those looming eucalyptus trees overhead. I do have a comment for Drew’s mention about if he just made himself more work for upkeep on the terraces. One thing I would suggest is once you planted all your fruit trees, etc , I would consider planting “ground clover” as a ground cover as it creates a tons of nitrogen in the soil plus it doesn’t grow tall. You can buy very low growing clover one variety is only like 4 inches tall. If you start it early before other native plants start to sprout, it will create a beautiful green cover, a little white or red flowers, depending on the mix and only 4 to 6 inches tall. Drew will never have to mow and trim up on those areas. Additionally, It will hold the soil to keep it from running away once it’s established. Its awesome stuff. I think everybody should do this in place of (gas mowing)lawn’s. Anyway, thanks for all your content love watching you guys and seeing things come along.

@lfuentes4098
@lfuentes4098 Месяц назад
Exactly what I was thinking. My property have a slope as well and we have dry stacked stone walls at the cuts to help keep the erosion under control. The earth will still find its way down though so it’s good to plant things that help retain the soil and won’t be too intrusive on the walls. I’m concerned in having too much of a slope inward since too much water into the mountain could also cause landslides.

It's Amazing how much that this week has transformed your property. I remember last year how much erosion from runoff that you had at the Watermill. I have a quick question, was the lower terrace behind your Watermill used previously for logging eucalyptus from the neighbor's property? What are the property lines on your 3 hectares of land? That ramp to landing area will be so useful this upcoming year as you build out the Watermill and need room for trucks and supplies to be staged. Really like how well the grass grew back on the lower terraces that you both had seeded. Not to mention the ruin just above the road entering your terraced Watermill.

I understand how your swales will trap the water, and so reduce erosion. But when the rain is torrential, there may still be erosion on the front wall of the terraces. Laying rocks along the terrace walls will reduce that, but will also be a major major effort. Perhaps a five year project, working on it as other tasks allow.

"I just need to remember that this is the beginning. That this is going to lead to what we want in the future." and you celebrate each step as you go. This is such a beautiful and healthy way of seeing life. Thanks for sharing it with us. xo and give those kitties a little scritch for me. We travel with our cats in the RV. They wear trackers so we don"t lose them. They love it as much as we do!

I’m curious to know if even if the chopped leaves from the eucalyptus are buried will they still reroute themselves and grow new sprouts upwards?? They tend to grow so rapidly. The terraces are really looking amazing. Lots of ideas for future projects! 👏👏👏

It would be really nice to see if you could get hold of some footage from the previous owners of what they started with and their progression.you are both so lovely and I'm enjoying watching your vlogs.

We have been given some original photos and have shared them in videos in the past. We talk with them frequently and love having they follow along and watching how we transform the place in there footsteps ❤️

Wow! Sad about the eucalyptus trees, but so happy you guys will be so much safer. I actually planted a eucalyptus tree because I loved the leaves and branches for making wreaths. I love your idea Brittany for making eucalyptus oil with the remaining trees. I use that oil every day. Those terraces are incredible!! Can’t wait to see what you do with them!! Love from Mary in SoOC💗
