In this Blender tutorial, we have discussed how to convert some excel data into a 3D line graph with animation. We will use a script for this operation - in fact two. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫: If the first script does not run correctly, you'll get an error in the second script (like "Module Not Found" error). The most common source of error is insufficient access on your device, so it is advisable to execute this script from an admin account on your machine. If the error still persists, I suggest you to use the portable version of Blender (follow the steps given here 👉 bit.ly/5mbexcelscripterror) This always works. Or you can skip this and directly go to the 3rd script given below that uses a CSV file instead of Excel.

The pip install step can be skipped by including the path to your pandas or whatever system python module by doing something like import sys; sys.path.append('/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/'); import pandas as p at the top of your csv script The way to find the path to include, is open your python console (not the blender python but system python) import whatevermodule; print(whatevermodule.__path__) And thanks for the great video! @@kabre_ali If you want to do it quickly, you can use a realistic high resolution picture and place it in the background. The angle of the picture should be perfect otherwise it won't go with the video. But this is really not a good technique. Creating an actual real city would take a lot of time. The things are not so difficult, you create several different buildings and use array modifiers to duplicate them several times to populate the city. It can take a week to create it but the end result will be satisfying. We will see if we can come up with a tutorial on this.

The output is animated. So if you are at the start of the animation, nothing will be visible. If you play the animation, the curve will progress and get visible. To quickly check it you can go to the last frame and verify if the curve is visible. Please let me know what you see.

It is a common problem. Often due to insufficient access, it will install the packages into user's area instead of blender library. Please check the error scenario and the solution mentioned in that document (attached the link in the video description). We need to give the instruction where to install the packages exactly (otherwise Blender can't see it). However, it also needs sufficient access privileges, otherwise it can still fail. Whatever happens, the system console will tell you. It even highlights the error msgs like access denied etc. In a nutshell, we need the pandas and openpyxl installed inside Blender's python library folder. Otherwise the script won't work.

Thank you. I tried this code and it was just I needed for graph animation. One question if it's okay to ask: my data has decimal numbers and negative numbers. The graph showed a long decimal numbers when I tried to run the code. for example, 0.5165 becomes 0.51650000000 on the graph. Is there anyway to fix the code?

Hi, we have to work on the negative numbers, it is not yet done. But the other problem that you have mentioned (long decimals) is easy to fix. In the script, you'll find an expression str(data_list[data_counter]) Search for it. You have to just replace this with str(data_list[data_counter]).split(".")[0] + "." + str(data_list[data_counter]).split(".")[1][:2] (put everything on the same line, don't break it on multiple lines). This assumes you have a decimal point for each number. If some numbers have a decimal point and some don't, it will need few more lines of code. Good question! "r" stands for raw, it means Blender (i.e. python) should not modify the path in any way. Usually it tends to add the current directory or the system path or replace backslashes with corresponding escape characters. Raw means the program will use the path as-is.

It's actually very similar to the single-line graph. We just need to repeat some part of the script with the second set of data. We have shared it with the members of this channel (the script for 2 graph lines), they have access to it. A separate tutorial is probably not needed, since it is the same thing only with some changes in the script.

@@kylebeschler03 No, you do not need excel directory. You do not even need excel to be installed on your machine. Just keep the excel file in some place and mention that location correctly in the beginning of the script as shown in the tutorial. Yes. All our scripts have two versions: Excel and CSV. Almost all spreadsheet writers including LibreOffice supports CSV format. You can save your spreadsheet in LibreOffice as a CSV file and use that with our script. In fact it is much easier to run the script with CSV file than Excel because the later needs some additional modules to be installed first.

It can be done. This script can be slightly modified to work with csv file instead of excel. Now in LibreOffice we need to export the data in a csv file, then you can use this script to create the 3d curve.

Store your x value in the month column and change the header ("month") to something more meaningful for you. However, this will show your x-values on the graph. If you want to display the x-values along the x-axis, on the x-axis, the script needs to be modified for that specific customization.

You can render the video as an image sequence. Then use Blender's VSE (Video Sequence Editor) to create a video from that image sequence along with a logo picture (you have to add a logo file from Add>Image).

@@dustonclubs3867 Understood. This will need a custom change because the difference in the values is small compared to the individual values. The graph is mathematically correct, but it does not look presentable. So a change is needed in the script to artificially amplify the differences and draw the graph based on that while the correct data is displayed alongside the graph.

@@dustonclubs3867 In our script, there is a list called normalized_data which we are building from the original excel data and these normalized values are actually used for drawing the graph. The logic to create this data needs suitable changes. It won't be a single line change. If I get time I will see if I can share an updated script for your requirement. In the long run, I have a plan to create an add-on that will work with any range of data with more flexibility.

Blender also runs on Mac, but excel is not there. However, this script can be easily modified to use csv file instead of excel. Then you can use this on your Mac as well.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. This error in the second script comes when the first script fails to run correctly. Often due to insufficient access privileges on your machine, the first script installs the modules in a different location - not within Blender. It will show a success code but this is of no use. Unless the modules are installed within Blender, the second script will fail and you'll get that error msg. You must have administrative access on your machine and then run the first script. Better still, check our modified script given in the possible error scenarios (in the video description) which will force your system to install the modules in the correct folder. Further to this, you can send the results in a mail to 5minblender@gmail.com and I will try to help you as far as possible in resolving these issues. But root cause of the error is insufficient access on your machine, so please get that access enabled before we do anything.

I think if you can get the conversion from excel to csv file done correctly (please note that we are talking about comma separated file, some systems use a different delimiter for csv format), rest of the things should work alike in mac and pc. And that conversion can be done online, without having any software installed on your pc - I mean, mac :)

Better still, if you can send your CSV file to us (5minblender@gmail.com) we can verify and confirm that it is nothing to do with the file or the script, just a windows vs mac thing or not!
