If you still find it difficult to bend with Simple Deform Modifier, use Geometry Nodes to bend anything very easily, we discussed it in our latest tutorial 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-okHTUpG_hSA.html 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐝-𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐆𝐮𝐦𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 👉 5minblender.gumroad.com/l/easy-bend 𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 👉 www.blendermarket.com/products/easy-bend Thank you 😊
6:43 FYI, to copy the rotation info from the object to the empty, you can select the empty first, then the object, then right click on the Rotation box and select "Copy All to Selected". You can click on, say, Z, and choose "Copy Single to Selected" if you want to copy only that value. You can do this with almost any setting in the Properties window. You have 100 cubes and only one of them set to "Viewport Display > Display as : Wire"? Select all, that object last so it's active, right click on that dropdown and choose "Copy to Selected" etc. Or you can click on the option while holding Alt, same thing.
The empty controls the bend direction, with respect to the object that you're bending. It could have been done without an empty, but Blender has implemented it this way. In our Easy Bend add-on we have removed the need of this empty.
@@5MinutesBlender I got add-ons coming out every orifice. Haha. I have a confusing mess of blend files and addons. I made some myself copying tutorials. It's a lot to know
This is very strange functionality. Very stupid, not intuitive. In 3ds max, you just select the axis and degree of bending, and everything works as it should.
Completely agreed. Bending with this default tool can turn into a nightmare. So we have developed a one-click solution where you can just select the bend axis and enter the bend angle. It is called easy bending. If you are interested, the product is available on Gumroad 👉 5minblender.gumroad.com/l/easy-bend and also on Blender Market 👉 www.blendermarket.com/products/easy-bend
If you need to rotate the object after bending, there are two ways to do that. One approach is to apply the modifiers that you have added. Now you can rotate the object freely, it won't affect the bending since the bending is now permanent. But a better technique would be like this 👉 Add an empty in the world origin. Then add a Copy Location constraint and a Copy Rotation constraint to the empty. Select the flute as the target object for both of these constraints. Now you can add a Simple Deform modifier and use this empty to bend the flute. You can move or rotate the flute as your wish, the bending won't get distorted. You don't need to apply the modifiers in this case, so your design remains flexible.
Please What is the purpose of adding the empty. I bent the scorpion tail i was designing fine without it. I want to know if there's an advantage of adding the empty that I don't know about
@@shaelizadeelizabeth3027 The empty is only required to control the location and the direction of the bend. The empty is needed in most of the cases, but it is not a mandatory thing. If your bend looks ok without the empty, you don't need it. One advantage is, if you rotate or move your object, the bend may change. If you use an empty and rotate or move them together, the bend will still be fine.
'm following this along with a similar shape but when I add the SimpleDeform modifier, it will only Bend on the Z axis. Nothing happens on both X and Y. Anyone got a clue what I'm doing wrong?
You need to have enough subdivisions along the X or the Y axis in order to have a bend effect in those directions (assuming you have placed the empty etc perfectly).
Somewhat true. A bending operation in a 3D space is little more complex than what we expect it to be because there can be several ways an object can be bent. Our human intelligence can easily detect which way a particular object should bend for a meaningful output, however, computer cannot guess that easily. This may be the reason why this modifier is so weird - but I agree that it can be made more user friendly.
It is possible to stack multiple bend (OR twists) effects with smooth transitions in between? I tried but I got sharp stops between distort effects. Thanks!
Yes it's possible but only in some limited cases, you can check this tutorial 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wFszsG2GX1M.html You can also check our product which makes it far easier 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-okHTUpG_hSA.html
Is there any way to prevent the object from rotating while using the restrictions? I just want to control the spot of bending, what basically the restrictions look good for. But the object rotation makes it useless for me.
At least I don't know if there is a way to stop that rotation. This is the reason we have added the option of similar restrictions in our Easy Bend add-on. You can use it for bending any object far more easily, no abrupt rotations. I am not trying to advertise anything here, but I don't think Blender supports that functionality natively. If you are interested in our Add-on, please check the pinned comment for a tutorial and the links. Thank you!
Very nice but how do I delete the empty as when I do the bend design is gone, also can you please speak a little slower, you talk so fast I need to keep stopping the video and rewind so many times, great videos like your way of teaching, just a little slower in taking please for the kids..lol
If your bend is final, you can simply "apply" the bend modifier to make it permanent. You then don't need the empty anymore. But you can also just ignore the empty. It won't show in the render. The purpose of an empty is to control various things in an animation, but it itself remains always hidden. If you prefer a slower version, you can adjust the speed from the RU-vid player controls. Most of the people prefer a faster version, some even watch it at 1.25 speed, so we don't want to slow it further 🙂
@@5MinutesBlender thank you for reply, your videos are the best in explaining things of all videos I seen, I'm new to blender, normally being an artist I just draw things quicker but when it comes to 3D that is something nicer, great work, thanks and thanks for reply..you in UK? Or USA?
You can actually move an object after bending. Please take a look at the second pinned comment to know how to move or rotate an object without breaking the bend operation. It may be a simple thing or a very complex thing to do - based on what geometry you have. We have created a tutorial on double bends, please check if it helps 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wFszsG2GX1M.html
So i curved my model, but as soon as i go into editor mode, there's a weird overlay effect and i can only tamper with the model as if it wasn't bent at all
That is the default behavior (modifiers are not effective while in the edit mode) but you can easily change this. In the modifier itself, you will see many icons at the top. One of them (the last from the right side group while going from right to left, or the second icon from the left after the dropdown arrow) is for this purpose, it's titled as "On Cage". If you enable this, you can see the final mesh in the edit mode and that particular modifier will be "editable". I hope it solves your issues.
@@5MinutesBlenderThank you! I have one last question. So it's removed the overlay, but there's a strange transparent effect on the model still with black dots all over it. Is that just something I'll have to deal with or can I remove it?
@@Radiomen_IV Those black dots are the vertices. They are visible only in the edit mode. Once you come back to the object mode it won't show those dots. Needless to say, the rendered output won't show them as well. Actually these dots are very useful white editing a mesh. Within the edit mode, you can switch over to edge selection mode or face selection mode, those dots won't be visible then.
FYI, to copy the rotation info from the Object to the Empty, you can select the Empty first, then Shift Select the Object, then right click on the Rotation Box and select "Copy All to Selected".
Excellent, thanks. About the question on which axis to bend the empty object here's an answer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pSLv2CFpNm8.html. You rotate the empty by 90 degrees on the axis around which you want to bend your object. Worked well for me.
I tried following this tutorial and for some reason it isn't working for me, I'm wondering if we have some different settings, and if so, what they are. I get stuck after applying the Simple Deform modifier. For some reason my object warps into an odd shape after applying that modifier. I'm so stuck and so sad, someone please help me.
Hi, you can send your blend file to us at 5minblender@gmail.com so that we can check it and suggest. This modifier can easily go crazy if the orientation of the target object or the empty is wrong (and it can easily go wrong). This is the reason why we created the add-on for Blender called Easy Bend. Anyway, you can send your blend file with the original model and let us know which way you want to bend it.
Yes it's difficult and cumbersome, so we have created an add-on that makes this job super easy. You can check this 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-okHTUpG_hSA.html
Thank you! Glad you think our tutorials are useful! I saw your individual comments on each of the beginner's tutorials as you finished each topic. Great going 👍
True actually 🙂 We created a product called Easy Bend that makes life super easy. Install it and forget the hassles of bending anything. Plus, it works within Geometry Node as well. You can use it as a modifier or as a geometry node, it works both ways 😊 You can search for it on Gumroad or on Blender Market if you are interested.
I could not perfectly visualize what you are trying to create, specially the later half. Are you trying to wrap a flat plane around a spherical structure? Something like this 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HqZbZqfP4lg.html ?
Glad it helped! You can make the bend permanent by applying the simple deform modifier. It will permanently bend the object so that you can use it anywhere, move it or merge with another mesh.

Very good explanation, personally I prefer to bend part of the object by bend tool in editing mode. Bend modifier is sure better when you want to bend complex objects. Anyway, after watching you great geometry node introduction, I wonder if we can bend there? Especially when you can apply (as I learn in the video) on different vertrex groups.
Thanks for liking our tutorials 💝 As far as I know, bending of objects is still not possible using geometry nodes, but I'm sure it is on the way. And I totally agree with you, it will be super fun to work on bending within geometry nodes!
@@5MinutesBlender Thank you so much! That's a huge help! I love being able to find these again later - so having the ability to save them to a playlist is fantastic!
OMG your the only tutorial that actually helped me! the rest barly told me what to do and even when i did it, it was weird, but this tutorial was straight forward and helped so much! Thanks! Now i can make the front of my dirt bike helmet wrap around the front :)

Thank you!! This helped me so much. But just a question, do you know how to fix deformation? Because when I move mine it will become distorted or weird.
I made it myself 😃 Not very difficult, take a cylinder and reduce its radius, then take another cylinder, use it along with a boolean modifier to cut holes through the first one. Done!
@@TimeForTowels Thank you. If you are actually creating that flute, don't forget to add a solidify modifier at the end to add some thickness. And in the boolean modifier, you may need to use some special options like Self Intersection etc if otherwise the result is incorrect.
Took a bit but got it to work and after watching your how to animate video I made animation of a bending bar! Couldn't have done this without watching your tutorials.
Something must be missing. For example, the orientation of your viewport's X-Y axis plays an important role. If the orientation is not the same as ours, you may not get the same result. There can be other reasons as well. I suggest you send your blend file as it is to us at 5minblender@gmail.com (you can also describe which way you want to bend it). We will check and get back to you on what is wrong or why you did not get the same result.
@@5MinutesBlender Oh thanks really, I have fixed it with 2 additional things, First used global and local features then loop cut. I appreciate your kind support.
I hope you have added subdivisions. If you are not able to get it to work, you can send your model in a blend file to 5minblender@gmail.com so that we can check and suggest you accordingly.
Instructional video. Well done. Having said that the video also demonstrates how difficult it can be to bend things in blender. Trial and error with three fields and three axis as well as matching all the necessary data from the origin object to simply bend something? Bending things shouldn't be this hard.
I tend to agree with you on this 👍 I also understand the difficulties in its development. In my opinion, a better tradeoff would be to give an option in the bend modifier, where it shows pictorial options of how something is bent. The user can comfortably choose what he sees. The system can easily do this by computing various results with all possible options. So the system displays, hey look, I can bend it in these available ways, which one do you think looks correct? And the user simply selects the one he needs. That will remove the difficulties on the part of the user, and also the code implementation is very simple. The UI will be little heavy, although manageable. But I think Blender UI is not like this yet.
The end part with the flute, can one solve this issue by simply ctrl+A apply all transformations - so that it's 1.0 ; would the bend then work perfectly?
No, I don't think that will work. However, you can do one thing to make life easier. Add an empty in the world origin. Then add a Copy Location constraint and a Copy Rotation constraint to the empty. Select the flute as the target object for both these constraints. And you are done! Now you can add a Simple Deform modifier and use the empty to bend the flute. The underlying principle still remains same, but this approach has big advantages on the UX front. You can move or rotate the flute at your will, the bending won't get distorted.
@@macnavi Very true, but RU-vid does not allow us to update the video once published. I will add it as a comment at the top, hope that will help. Thanks for this suggestion 👍
It is rotating because the empty which you used for bending operation stays in its original position, so it is influencing the bending such that the object is rotating instead of moving. Parent your object to the empty i.e. make your object as parent for the empty. Now if you move the object, the empty will move along with it and everything will work without any problem. Just in case it does not solve the issue, please let me know.
