It and the Merino hoody have both been on my list of stuff I want from Varusteleka since I found them. Good to know it gets the Wooly seal of approval too. Stay frosty over there, brother.
Getting one you’ve sold me also woolly in winter with buffalo underneath u ain’t getting wet and your fully spark proof, it just shows u don’t av spend £300 to be sorted in the woods👍
I bought this exact anorak/smock as well and I must say that I love it! It is a great value at their retail price, however, I was browsing their "Used Kierto products" and got it around half price! It was in new condition I must say. I did modify it a little...I sewed in cashmere into the handpocket area and lined the hood with cashmere wool as well. I put elbow patches and also wear patches on the wrist and along the front pouch zipper hood. I highly recommend the merino hoody from them as well.
Wooly, finally followed your advice and got one. Thank you! I should have gotten one years ago. I have had it since mid fall, and I wear it for woods walks almost every day. Today was -4 C with a light breeze, and it was comfortable with a mid weight base layer. Handled a light rain pretty well. The only thing I would like is some cord loops or maybe a simple cellphone sleeve in the kangaroo pocket.
Wooly , I seriously love your passion and enthusiasm when reviewing a product that are NOT fresh out of the box or packet that alot of reviewers do . I bought the Meindl army boots you reviewed and was impressed and will probably buy this Anorak and the matching pants on your recommendations . Living on the IOW I have a choice of Blacks which is expensive , Mountain warehouse or Trespass which sell pretty low end budget stuff so any recommendations for outdoor gear is welcome . Wooly I would love you review other stuff like waterproof rucksacks and hats that stand up to the bad weather .
i would recommend the outdoor pants , the windproof pants are ok, but only for summer, as for rucksacks, i never trust them always get a regular rucksack and use dry bags
I enjoy your channel a lot! I love Varusteleka project and his products. Only con I noticed with Sarma (outdoor serie) polycotton: Is much more noissy than policotton surplus gear, G-1000 or Ventile. Only a problem for treestand bowhunters or "lonely fox" operators...
Weeeeell, Just got mine out of the packaging and holy moly the QUALITY of it. You mention the material isn't that thick, but just for reference it's a tad thicker than fjallraven's g1000 (I know you said you don't have much exp. with that so hopefully this helps someone!). I can't get over how cozy but tough this poly blend is. I bet it's gonna get even better when they transfer the manufacturing to Europe soon! Now to put it through the paces. I'll be gardening, landscaping, and logging in it for the rest of winter and spring. Roll on! Ty for the cracking review once more!
Just got back from a weekend with my Scouts involving fire's, wood working, shelter building and navigation. Once again I've worn an old fleece with cotton trousers and have managed to still get boulder burns in a reasonably expensive soft shell 🤬! I'm a great lover of the Buffalo smocks and am on my 2nd one due to you guessed it.... Fire damage! I need fire resistance that isn't fjallraven prices! It's between this and the Helikon-Tex Woodsman?
@@RedBranchBushcraft I've ordered one of these as the Helikon-Tex are a stretchy fabric across the back none waxable. There sizing system was really good to.
@@RedBranchBushcraft some people seem to think Varusteleka gear is expensive but from r what you get quality wise there is little to touch em plus they do all the sizing as well so you can get it fitting exactly as you want. I’m like you height wise but I have a bit of a belly so can sometimes struggle getting stuff to fit me properly but no such trouble with Varusteleka
Hey wooly, what would you recomend wearing under this to make it a great michigan winter coat....I was thinking somthing like the uk issue pcs Thermal jacket? What are your thoughts? Need to replace my old German issue winter coat, it's 20 years old!
@@RedBranchBushcraft Looks like it. I'll put it through The Hart and Snake Rivers, Yukon, Canada this summer (plus wax or DIY oilskin). Will let you know.
Hey man, I just order both color, I very love Anorak's design, windproof, huge pocket, fucking love it. Anyway, thank you again,I watch a lot of your video, teach me a lot!
Hi Wooly So the rabbit hole led me here. Anaorak / smock looks great. Good value. Been on the website but can't find the weight. As you now know :) am searching for kit for 4 season long distance mountain walking in the UK . 1. Could this be used in conjunction with a buffalo? 2. Could it be used instead of a gortex shell if using the layering system? 3. If no to above, what light weight gortex would you recommend? Heeeeeeelp!
I used it on top of a buffalo , not light weigh not as waterproof as goretex , light weight goretex I'd be looking at pack light stuff, burghaus make good gear as do montane
I love mine. My only small criticism is that my helikon anorak has organiser pockets and a little d ring in the kangaroo pocket. But this is a much better material and fit for me
Thanks for this Wooly! Very much thinking of getting one now. A couple of questions though:- 1. how heavy is this, and does it pack small? (Thinking of getting it for climbing such as Snowdon, and multi day treks/camps. Looks unparalleled at this price as durable wind protection, but it must be light and pack down well). No worries if you don't know a weight or can't weigh it super easily, I don't want to be a pain in the arse, haha. 2. I'm usually okay in a medium for items, including wearing two layers underneath. I'm 5,11, 12 st. I've heard these anoraks run small though - would you recommend a large in this?
2 years later, do you still wear the Sarma windproof anorak? I'm wanting to replace my Fjallraven windproof smock that I've finally beaten into retirement.. Will this Anorak replace it??
I wear a Hilltrek ventile smock now , I give this away when I got the Hilltrek, to very different smocks . I've never worn falljraven but for the price the vaursteleka is hard to beat
@@RedBranchBushcraft the Fjallraven I've owned was exactly the same as the Anorak,.. A windproof, over the head that needed Waxing.. So as long as the Sarma is well made I'm sure it will do the job.. Thanks for your time..
@@RedBranchBushcraft Their famous "Anorak Number 8 " retails for about £500 (since apparently some people are willing to spend that sort of dough on an anorak). A tad more luxurious material here and there and a few inches more textile on the hem but overall hardly justifies 500 quids. But as all Swedish things it must be overpriced because well, it´s Swedish ;)
Thanks for this review. It looks excellent! A small complaint. I am not a military person and want to blend in as much as possible. That said, I find velcro on this sort of annoying. It'd be a much cleaner look without.
I removed both velcro patches on my sarma woolshell jacket easily (and carefully). They also sit on top of arm pockets. Doesn't even look like they were there. Could defo do that with this no doubt!
@@RedBranchBushcraft Hello sir...from the USA. Love your channel, content, and your passion. I'm looking to buy this anorak, and want to layer up for COLD weather; the website says go up one size from the recommended size. Do you have any input on this? Cheers-
Mine is a size medium and I can gett some a base layer and and Insulation layer under it. But I think a medium is the right size for me ( I went with recommend size on the website) if I had of sized up I think a large would have been to big. But then I don't get very cold here
@@RedBranchBushcraft awesome! Im definitely going to be getting one of these. I fell for one of those anorak scams on Facebook recently, not having any experience with buying online. I Paid $80 for a piece of crap fleece anorak rip off. I'm so mad haha
@@RedBranchBushcraft ah yes, good call. I live in rainy British Columbia, and I looking for a waterproof system for bushcrafting. I'm gonna order a wool roll neck donegal sweater from theirishstore, and thought this might be a good top layer
Maybe don't wax it (I know, sacrilege on cotton!) but use a DWR like on the British Army windproof smock and goretex outer layers. Should work like blazes on something like that.
How tall are you what size is the anorak i have short arms im 5'3 39 chest 23 arms to wrist 28 inch arms overall i dont know if i need a small or medium lol how many inches are the arms from shoulder stitch onward on the anorak youre wearing ? lol hahahaha
