What's the best way of testing a catamaran? Sailing her for a week, so that's what we did with the Excess 11.

We hope you enjoy the yacht review and boat tour - we chartered this Excess 11 from Canet-en-Rousillion in France and sailed her down to Cadaques and back in a range of conditions including flat calm, and 35 knots of Tramuntana (northerlies).
▫️
We had a great week on the boat and were impressed by the living space on this 37 footer. She was fun to sail too, a good package.
▫️
There's always pros and cons to every boat of course - watch the whole video to find out what we liked and what we think could be improved.

Nice review. What would your suggestion be for someone considering a used version of this model vs the Open 40 / Aventura 37 for a liveaboard family of 4? Best regards!

Hi, thanks for the kind feedback. I haven't sailed on an Aventura 37, I'll just start with that caveat. The Excess 11 and Aventura are roomier down below. In terms of overall comfort, the Aventura is a clever design for a 37 footer. The Nautitech has lots of living space up top and it works particularly well in warmer climates (big covered space aft). In terms of performance, the Nautitech shades it, followed by the Excess. I like the low booms on the Excess and Nautitech (keeps the centre of effort on the mainsail low). If you want a protected helm, the Aventura wins. On the Aventura and Excess you reef from the helm, on the Nautitech from the mast (there are some advantages with this simple system on a forty footer). In terms of resale, the Excess and Nautitech are probably a match in terms of depreciation. The Aventura is a less well known brand. All 3 have options for a bowsprit which I would go for. The Excess and Nautitech have self-tacking jibs, the Aventura has an overlapping jib. The Aventura and Nautitech have travellers for trimming the mainsail, the Excess has a bridle system. The Excess has the widest dealer network (Beneteau Group). Those are the main variables I would be looking at if I was matching up my requirements. I hope that helps, if you need any more help we have more detailed reviews on katamarans.com or contact us through the site, all the best with your search!

@@katamaranscom Thanks for the thoughtful response. You have a ton of information over at the site so thanks for that. I'm hoping to see trial the Nautitech in June. Sailed the Excess 12 but the 11 fits the budget better. Thanks again and all the best!!

@@jones3892 good luck with your search! I prefer the 11 to the 12 personally. Ask them about their new model which launches 2025

Hmm, now I’m not expert but those “skeg” rudders in the video look remarkably similar to “spade” rudders I’ve seen around…?

Yes, you are right. They are spade rudders, thank you for the correction. Have been brainwashed from my windsurfing days 🙄

I love this boat but, since I single hand a lot those exposed helm stations are deal breakers. I need to be able to see all four corners and be protected in a rough sea state. Sure there's auto-pilot but when it breaks...and it will(at the worst time), I don't want to be helming on the stern with breaking following seas. How was it? Did it feel like the seas could swamp you if it got rough?

It is more of a monohull position, for sure, but you have two helms. When it gets really rough you just move to the dry side (windward). If I was doing a circumnavigation I would probably have a back up auto-pilot on my options for redundancy, but that would also be a good plan on a raised helm cat. For me, the visibility was more of an issue in the marina, but even there you just hop up to the deck every now and then or switch sides. They turn on a sixpence

Why don't I seen any traction kite on sail boats or catamarans? A traction kite can drag the wind in high altitude.

O-Yachts have been testing this. I am guessing they are not that easy to deploy from a moving bow

Hi, I am the owner of the boat you are presenting. Would have been great to discuss before putting it online.
