Director Ari Aster and stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor sat down for an exclusive extended interview about Aster’s follow-up to ‘Hereditary,’ ‘Midsommar,’ ahead of the film’s first public screenings. Described as a breakup film with some serious horror elements, and set during a once-every-90-years Swedish festival where the sun never sets, the buzz is that ‘Midsommar’ is one of the most original scary movies to come along in years. Here, Aster, Pugh, and Reynor talk about the folklore that inspired the movie, the challenges of creating a horror film set entirely in sunlight, and how the movie differs from ‘Hereditary.’ Plus, they have a piece of advice for moviegoers about to take the ‘Midsommar’ ride: “Watch the walls.”

He’s just having a hard time explaining his process and probably drawing blanks. Off the cuff, I fumble when someone asks me a simple thing like what my tattoo means. Anyone who's picking on Ari in the comments for taking his time with his words should be ashamed of themselves. Ari suffered from a stutter as a child and I'm sure that the stress of doing well in an interview probably brings some of that back. As someone who was also a stutterer as a child and is a current writer, I have a lot of the same pausing/ stammering habits as well when I have to speak off the top of my head in a stressful situation. half of it for me is that it is stress induced and I can't help it; the other half is that as a writer every word has a place and purpose and I want to pick the perfect word every time even when I'm speaking.

Nicely explained. I noticed his difficulties to answer clearly in this interview, but it has to be difficult when you're trying to convince people to watch your movie without giving many spoilers. And you have to add the stress of FILMING A FUCKING MOVIE which is a huge endeavour, trying to explain his internal process for making the story (one that seems to be very intense and confusing even for him) and probably the exhaustion for making who knows how many of these kind of interviews. I don't mind if, in that context, the guy takes his time to search the right words.

Fat Maybe though I wouldn't put my money on it. Hereditary was fine, though felt more like a throwback/homage to 70's horror films like Rosemary's Baby and The Sentinel than anything else. Judged on it's own? As I said, it was okay but had some seriously-and unintentional I'm willing to wager-laugh-out loud moments that didn't help. I haven't seen Midsommar yet-I'll see if I can catch it this weekend or next-and I expect to enjoy it but my expectations aren't huge (like with Hereditary I expect to like it; the questions is can it bring more).

@@tonywords6713-- indeed. but best picture should simply be the best picture. what a contradiction with them nominating the basically generic superhero popcorn movie Black Panther for best picture - dark knight never got nominated. You got wakanda, the most high tech nation in the world supposedly, and the warriors still fight by throwing spears. Black panther is as absurd as any super hero movie, or more so, and totally mediocre in every way. Horror movies are often the most original, you never who's going to make it to the end, they can go into weirder and more surprising territory with their plot beats.
@kurtwylde2332

theContainer &theContents the comic book genre never got nominated for anything as well. Plus why would the people of wakanda need to make guns when you have something simply as a spear that can stop a tank. It’s their way of life. Hereditary is Oscar worthy most of the horror genre is not.

@@millsykooksy4863 no it wasnt. It was a mid level marvel movie at best. Unremarkable in every way. Infinity war had vastly smarter writing. The academy chooses nominees based on mind controlling the public and cultural agendas... the quality of the movie is barely relevent. If you are objective... its clear the vast majority of movies are complete trash creatively. Even most of the nominees. Certainly theres some consistently brilliant ppl in Hollywood like nolan, james cameron, aaron sorkin and im sure many more ppl could list... but, theres also no question that the vast majority of them are just secret society ppl who are given their place and status and jobs and never earned them and dont actually have much real talent or ability. And thats why so many movies are so repetitive and weak. And i think the system actually wants to make mediocre and even bad movies, because it debases the citizens, it dumbs us down, weakens our minds, brainwashes us into idiotic behaviors and beliefs. Movies are not art, they are programming. The world is not a meritocracy, you cannot earn elite status in a fair way. You will have to cheat and steal and lie and make deals with the devil and sell your soul to get the big jobs with the big money. And because of that... most movies are garbage created by hacks. Same with tv and everything else in all domains of media and art.

Ari Aster successfully confuses the audience in Midsommar. He forces us to sit in the Uncanny Valley throughout the entirety of the film. We as the audience must attempt to rationalize, process and stomach the events unfolding before our eyes, just as the characters were forced to. The movie was so gorgeously meta in that every character had a reaction I that saw being mimicked in person with the myself, and the people around me watching in the theater. This self awareness doesn't pull you from the world within the movie. It actually made the movie even more immersive. I felt as if I was a part of the world. It made the movie so relatable, and yet vastly unsettling. The fact that it was genuinely and effortlessly funny creates a truly 3-dimensional world, which forces you to see the characters (good and bad) within yourself. I am just so impressed by how confused the film made me. Just as confused as the characters are, just as confused as the setting of the film itself is, since it's set in a beautiful Swedish village, set in all daylight, and yet is filled with the juxtaposition of the dark emotions and events sitting just under the surface in all of these gorgeously shot scenes. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you to all of those involved in this film. Happy Midsommar 🌻☠️🌻

this movie gave me nightmares that night. I watch a lot of horror and this doesn't normally happen to me. It wasn't scary but disturbing. I had to get up in 4.5 hours for work the next morning, got bad dreams about the movie then couldn't fall asleep again. I kept thinking about the film. Kept telling myself, stop thinking about it, think about something else, but my mind would keep drifting back to the film. In the end, I went to work with only 2 hours of sleep.

Went into the movie ready to be fucked up like Hereditary did to me and I was not disappointed. After the ending credits my friend and I needed a second to decompress so we took a walk and discussed how brilliant this movie is. It wasn’t as horrifying as hereditary but it leaves the viewer with a sense of dread and uneasiness that immediately (for me) cements Ari Aster as a horror icon. I went in with high hopes (which were met with beautiful sound design, gorgeous visuals, unsettling sequences, well executed gore, brilliant acting, etc.) and tons of energy but after seeing the film I was both mentally and emotionally drained. Can’t wait to see what Ari does next.

If Ari's intention was to transport viewers to that world of Midsommar, he certainly achieved his goal. Watched the movie twice in a row this week and it keeps haunting me. I'm far from being a horror film fan, this movie is certainly something more. It was so beatiful and so disturbing at the same time. On a side note, I love how Florence greets the viewers in this interview by doing the "jazz hands". Think I saw that somewhere else, lol.
