I'm fine with this cut as long as he releases the deleted and extended scenes. Every movie shoots hours and hours of footage that's ultimately cut. This sounds long but a lot of them are just establishing shots, B-roll footage from different angles, long pauses, and alternate takes from already existing scenes. Assembly cuts are usually the first drafts where every single scene shot is laid out and strung together in order before it gets shaped.
He's changing FILM itself entirely... I wouldn't even characterize Midsommar as "horror," frankly. I'd call it a drama/ thriller/ suspense. Aster is as much "horror" as Stanley Kubrick (who is an obvious big influence on the director.). Pigeon-holing this man into one genre is myopic, imo.
Dylan C Totally agree I just watched it and it was sick. It wasn’t scary but disturbing like a snuff film. Any director can smash a character’s head on camera and call it horror. A true creative director doesn’t need to do that to make a good horror film.
Ari is my favorite director going today. Both Midsommar and Hereditary left it's mark on me and obsessed me for weeks after. The portraying of grief/depression and the way you invest in the characters and fear for what might happen to them in Ari's films are unlike anything else.
I literally can be having the world's most normal conversation and suddenly I find myself talking about a thing that I missed on Midsommar. These movies are packing with continuous talk and discussion, it is not a film you see and forget about it two days later.

He's mentioned he wants to work on a comedy movie in the future. I'm excited to what he puts together, especially since the funnier parts of Midsommar were brilliant.
I already have him above Jordan Peele if I were to compare the two. US was a bit of a letdown for me. The only part I liked was when Tim Heidecker was "communicating" to the others while on the dock, which made me laugh. The only good scary part was Elizabeth Moss on the carpet.
Moo Moo Puppy agreed. Us felt like a parody of horror. Both of Aster’s features have been near flawless. He’s already up there with Denis Villeneuve for me. Two of the best working directors right now.

@@rebeccagirling2808 as far as I know the directors cut was only shown in select theaters on Aug 30th. It will be released on blue ray and dvd eventually.
With Astor, Peele and Robert Eggers we are blessed with such magnificent vision in this generation of horror. And there are plenty more out there who are no slouches either! Looking forward to Eggers’ The Lighthouse.

Mad sommar is a very strange and weird movie. I dont like at all. We cant take something good from that movie. When i know if he wrote the strange things jonathan as well, so I thought I knew what the strangeness of his upcoming movie would be
I gave Peele chances to blow me away with his films but I am left underwhelmed afterwards. I think his ideas are better than the final products. Plus I believe he is getting into his own hype which I find obnoxious.
To hear such a magnificent genius discuss his creations in depth and with honesty is so beautiful and refreshing. He is truly changing the game right now. I’d say him and Jordan peele but I’m tired of comparing them to each other since they’re so incomparable. Ari aster is awesome. Master at his craft

I saw the director's cut in NY last night. It's the only cut I've seen. WOW. So good, I love this director's true auteur vision. He really lets scenes breathe and live in wide masters, the editing is amazing. It's beautiful and surprisingly funny - I was laughing when Dani smiles at the end. So confident.
I know that Ari has to make the Director's Cut go to Stream/DVD because of the impact it had already in just a couple of days and felt like a different movie for most even tho the rest wasn't changed til the end. But I think this is a learning lesson for Ari because I actually wanted to see the 3 hours and 45 minutes of the ENTIRE UN-EDITED movie because the details of this movie and the crazy things happening makes the movie completely euphoric due to it's context and would've been awesome to see everything! And that's why to some people it felt like something else was kinda missing even tho it was very beautiful and terrifying still.. Yet I think the Director's Cut will be satisfying and I believe it will come out around the same time to streaming since the people are really wanting to see more! I know I wanna see MORE!!!

I love Ari's movies but I really wish he would admit that Midsommar is as much a horror movie as it is a break up drama .... Its this sort of denial of the horror classification that gives people the impression of the horror genre being something not to be proud of ... Being a director who knows how to make heavy lifting horror movies in the grand tradition of The Exorcist, Ari has a chance to elevate the whole horror genre to a higher level of respect among film buffs, he should use that chance to tell everyone that horror can also be as sophisticated as the best drama movies ...
Midsommar is the best movie maybe in the whole decade. It looks like the real movies from the 70's, Rosemary's Baby or The Omen, movies that moves feelings inside, not the actual plain cinema, that only serves for simple entertainment. Thanks for this awesome movie. ❤
This dude has it. I’m not a horror movie buff but I’ve seen all the classics. Without a doubt both movies are deeply disturbing and that’s mainly due to the score. Talk about depicting “Grief”. He absolutely nails it!! Bravo brother, I can’t wait to see his next movie. Every night for a week after seeing Hereditary I checked the corners of my room for Tony Colette. LOL!!
I actually loved the pacing of midsommar ! This movie did take a second viewing to to really appreciate it. Florence Pugh’s performance is really perfect, this movie in my opinion is a masterpiece ! And oh my god, what ever you have to do to get Mr. Phoenix in your next film, do it !!! 👍🏼
He should continue to utilize the slow build form of horror or for any type of film he makes. Having such a slow rise creates a feeling of satisfaction when it comes to a close. Any film that he has had been a part of I've enjoyed so much. There is great mix of feelings when I see films like Midsommmar, I always process it for days.
Yoooo. I walked out of both hereditary and midsommar thinking I thought they were mediocre. Then I kept thinking about them for the following days and fucking loved them. That's a special thing.

I usually walk out of films still in shock liking them the most and as time passes and I process what I witnessed, I gradually see their faults and like them less and less. (Akin to Phantom Menace syndrome) But for Ari Aster's films I love them initially and my love for them grows.

(I will actually re-watch films I love with a conscientious effort to view and attend to Different, or shall we say "secondary" parts of a shot, as in, instead of keeping my eyes on the main character in a scene in which they're talking, keeping my eyes on a secondary character, or even a part of the background - just in order to experience something new. And I do. This, I think, is one of the beauties of Film. With a book, the words are the words. Yes, your experience may change as you re-read them; but, the Eye can only true see and "match up" with the brain in fairly limited flashes and snippets. Re-Watching something (along with the aural sensation of music, effects, and dialogue) just provides such a richer canvas on which such a lush environment can be built, experienced, and re-experienced again and again... Try it out!!
Huh, it's about a depressed woman who is in the worst time of her life and brought to a cult which she is taken into because they need new pure blood so their group doesn't become too inbred. Nothing spiritual about it. Literally a cult.
the framing as "fairy tale" more than "horror" was found helpful. the description of new family relationship as *also* codependent was found helpful, along with general direct addressing of codependency by director. edward yang reference was found interesting. inclusion of lake scene in director's cut very much added to film for viewers, as well as may queen dani running and off chair at end.
Dust Memory people don’t go to horror for the story anymore. I went with a group of people that came out not even understanding the ending of the movie...there’s a blanket assumption that all horror is mindless
I love this directors unique ability to show a film in such a shocking & disturbing way in many scenes. Looking forward to more from him. If I get a chance to meet this guy that would be amazing!
To that last person's question, I remember being so wound up when I saw the movie in theaters - I was told it was horror, and I don't do horror - that not only did I completely bust out laughing at the Christian/Maya ritual scene, but I also remembering being devastated when Dani decided to torch Christian because I recognized it as meaning she was now a member of the cult. When I later watched it again on Prime Video, though, it was much easier for me to sympathize with her decision in the end now that I knew all of what to expect, and even more so once I watched the director's cut.
I'd love to see him to a series of some sort. I'm a big Fincher fan - Zodiac is one of my favorite movies. In a recent interview he talked about how Zodiac didn't work (for mass audiences) because it was a 2hr 45min film with no clean resolution but with Mindhunter he has a lot more freedom. The theatrical cut of Hereditary is great and I would love to see some deleted scenes but I don't think it needs a directors cut. With Midsommar, however, I did feel like the story didn't fit. It felt like a very slow movie and yet at the same time like a lot was missing. To be honest, after how much I loved Hereditary I was disappointed by Midsommar, but I'm curious to see if the director's cut fixes my gripes. That being said, if you end up with a 4 hour movie, maybe you should have made a miniseries. I felt the same way with the new IT. It felt long, and yet like a lot was missing. I think the miniseries format would have been better... still excited for Pt 2 though.
I watched the directors cut first. Having heard Ari feels closer to it, I doubt I will ever check the theatrical cut, since I too cant imagine the story without the extra character development.

Supposedly the movies Blu-ray release won’t have special features I read somewhere they’ll save those for the Directors Cut Blu-ray release. I’m wondering if they won’t do some kind of combo w an extended Hereditary cut
buttershady24 I thought the same thing. Absolutely loved that film, but it was categorized as a thriller, and really is multigenre: drama, Sci fi, body horror, a musical number and comedic elements. My best guess tho is that The Shape of Water likely just slipped Aster’s mind when placed “on the spot” during a Q&A.

I love horror films but very few maybe 4 movies have actually freaked me out amd scared me but this one was another story especially being alone in a theatre with maybe only two other people in there and this movie actually gave me slight anxiety
I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned The Influence of the Holy Mountain (especially in the way humor works in both films), or the works of Ingmar Bergman form the late 60s- Early 70s. There was that one character named Ingmar they meet when they first arrived at the village though so..
Ya way before the movie came out as soon as I read it was set in Sweden I was like “well that makes sense”. The scene in the car where it just holds on Peter was when I said “yeah I think I might love this movie already”, didn’t even need the later confirmation he was a Bergmanite Also he said on reddit Santa Sangre was a movie he loved I think

I think it would be terrifying to see the seemingly “normal” village folk stalk the members of the group up until their demise! Would add a whole other feel to the movie 👌
o0oh did i fall hard for this film. i have analyzed it to pieces, but i have lingering questions. one is like a discussion question i keep entertaining but ending up nowhere with: what is the significance of ingemar, the one who recruits the english couple and also burns to death in the end? symbolically, what does he represent?
How does one walk into an interview, knowing full well you are the interviewer, so completely and utterly unprepared?? She sounds like she's struggling to think of a cohesive question and just keeps talking until something comes out! So frustrating to listen to!

I’ve definitely seen more fucked up and unsettling movies (The House That Jack Built, Antichrist, The Devil’s Backbone, Raw, Bone Tomahawk) but I don’t think any of them have stuck with me as much as Midsommar or Hereditary. There’s just these little nuisances and realistic things that hurt so much because they are so honest (when she says sorry to Christian because she should have reminded him to tell her happy birthday). If these are this guys debut films (often a filmmakers worst work) then I’m pretty hyped to see what’s next.
