After winning a major victory in court over the song "Blurred Lines," Marvin Gaye's family sat down with ET's Nischelle Turner to talk about what the court decision means to them.
Me to and when they sued the Gaye family I was like what that's their ass the asked for it!!! T.I. Was the only one skipped away and Robin told on himself!!!!
I was so shocked he didn’t credit them. I still love for real but this was obvious heavy influence you should give them a credit he has multi millions how much could giving them credit cost is it worth your reputation they should’ve been settled out of court and pay them what they wanted
I'm still amazed at the number of people who try to defend Blurred Lines. Like you, I was literally singing Got to Give it Up over the track. I had believed they'd been granted permission, as artists who sample typically obtain rights. I was shocked they had not gained permission. I was even more shocked that people defended Robin/Pharrell. Like Nona said, good people can do bad things. Sadly, they are enabled by stans and apologists. Robin/Pharrell know what they did.
@@creating1_c1999 Don't forget that thief Ed Sheeran. Like that wasn't Let's Get It On. (Thinking Out Loud) All those alleged RU-vid musicians talking about they couldn't hear it.
I'm trying to figure out, did he steal from Marvin Gaye, or was he simply inspired? What's interesting is that this was THE song that put Farrel on many people's radar. 🤔
@@ms16794 it was a similar chord progression. Marvin Gaye had also used many beats, rhythms, and chord progressions in his music that were not originally and solely composed by him. That’s just music. Basic foundation and theory. You can’t have Marvin Gaye without Temptations or Ray Charles, just like you cant have Ed Sheeran without Marvin Gaye. Should Gaye’s family have to pay Charles’ family? Should we just keep going around in this useless exploitation cycle? What’s the limit?
Hugh Tyner ... and they shouldn't even wait that long to do it... you don't piggyback off of someone's hard work and call it your own..... if it would have been Michael Jackson's Beat It song and Pharrell claimed that it was his own creativity everybody would have been an uproar
I don't think its that serious. They sued, they won. That's it. It think they were milking this whole thing to be something more serious. They replayed a song that sounded too much like Got to give it up and they lost in court.
@@abyss104 You can tell she is in pain. I see it. It's called discernment...If it's not "that serious", thank God...but nothing wrong with praying for her just in case.
@@INGEN_Dahnie-el-aha-ha Bullshit. It doesn't even sound exactly the same. I can see the similarity but its not the same record. The family got money from it anyway.
@@bocameron4507 , I actually don't have a problem with Thicke being sued because he tried to sue them before they sued him. The Gaye family counter suit was a reaction to what Thicke did. . I don't think it sounds exactly the same but I can see how the phrasing of the song is similar. Pharrell doesn't need to steal anyone's music. But I think Thicke knew the sound was similar to Marvin's record. Anyway,, I'm glad the won the suit. You have a Happy New Year.
The first time I heard it, I instantly knew it was "got to give it up" I told someone that and they said 'are you sure?' and I said 'are you crazy!' (in my Redd Foxx voice)😂😂
The Gaye family is a tragic case they all were subject to drugs and their up bringing triggered all of their misfortune it's true how a person is raised reflects their life...
They're "not in that space" to file anything else against Burrell...but they ARE in the space to file yet another lawsuit against Ed Sheeran. My gosh, MANY songs sound alike -- is that a BAD thing?? I think it's a GOOD thing. I've listened to SO many songs, that reminded me of songs from my past (or just other songs), & I've then gone to RU-vid & watched those past songs & brought back the memories. Artists emulate their favorite artists. To me, that HONORS the original artist. There are only so many chords & beats out there, with millions of songs, how could some NOT sound like others?? To be clear, I grew up in the Marvin Gaye era -- I LOVED his music!! But hearing modern day songs that might sound like his would only cause me to go BACK & listen to Gaye's music again!
Ed Sheeran just won the case yesterday. And just to point out, it wasn't Marvin Gaye that influenced Thinking Out Loud. It was Van Morrison that influenced the song. Van Morrison did the chord progression a few years before Let's Get It On was released.
Guys, I was mad as hell reading that crap, regardless of who’s involved this is awful for copyright law. This basically means that the “feel/groove” of a song is covered under copyright law. Before copyright covered mainly melody, lyrics and (in some cases) accompanying chord progression. Those are real tangible things that can be easily evaluated the “feel” of a song is not. So basically what this means is if you’re influenced by another song (which happens very very often) you’re liable to get sued for being influenced by that song.
you said it.... MAINLY MELODY...... can you honestly say that you cant hear the MELODY of Gayes song in Pharell's songs...... they know they took the melody and tried to cover and drown it in electronic sounds....... Inspiration and taking the foundation of a song.... are two different things.......... the MELODY is the foundation of a song... that cant be covered up.... lmao
@@emmanuelgarcia.garcia6556 lol its business its steps u have to take ti use someones song its not free , if someone stole one of his songs he would of did the same thing
Damn right and should be, most mfz that redo these songs cant even play a instrument. How do u think they come up with that feel good feel. So create your if u a creator u should be able to come up with your own feel good melody or groove just like the original. The problem is most mfz aren't creators or true artists. Pharrell is not a genius. Have u seen him play like prince does a concert. Or play the piano the whole song thru. He cant. He may can do some simple melody he had to practice for years. Like JAy z say , they say they made hov, well ok then go make another hov. They cant
Marvin Gaye did not write this song. "Ain't That Peculiar" was written and composed by Smokey Robinson and three other members of the Miracles: guitarist Marvin Taplin, singer Pete Moore, and singer/Smokey's former cousin-in-law Bpbby Rogers. Not Marvin Gaye. So if you're going to claim Pharrell stole anything (I disagree, but hey...), he would have stolen it from Smokey. Not Marvin. Smokey wrote this record. Smokey produced this record. Smokey told the Funk Brothers what to play in the studio session(s), and the Andantes what to sing on the background vocal track. Marvin showed up and sang (for his life, yes, but that's all he did for this record).
+NX Nicker. Smokey wrote the song with the intentions of others at Motown to sing it and he and Barry Gordy chose it for Marvin. It was their property dummy.!!! They were all with Motown Dummy. Don't you understand that you have to get the rights to a song before you sing it? There are legalities involved. Every singer in Motown had the rights to record any song that Barry and Smokey offered. Motown owned them and the songs dummy.
They were not suppose to win this case, rhythm and harmony are not suppose to be copyrightable. Shame on the Gaye family for that. There are gonna be other estates suing and using this case as a reference. Which could effectively destroy genre bending songs if feeling/vibe become copyrightable offenses
This ruling gets at something about the fundamental nature of art. Every artist is influenced by everything that's come before, creativity comes from the free flow of ideas, especially in hip-hop, a genre founded on the idea of taking the old and making it new again. Copyright law has always been about balancing the recognized good that comes from the public exchange of ideas and protecting the originators of those ideas, but this ruling tilts that balance dangerously towards the side of protection. All legal precedent before this said that such a vague interpretation of copyright wasn't within the bounds of the law, which is why Thicke and Pharrell's legal team seemingly felt so confident in pressing forward. That precedent's now changed.
I would hate to be in the music industry today, given lawsuits like this. I would agree with Ed Sheeran, that if he loses his suit, he'll leave the music industry. BTW, if he does lose, it will a travesty. While the songs are similar, they are also VERY different. Rick Beato's comparison is excellent!
Faking it to Make it seem legit that it was for his music not money so they dont look like pieces of shit for doing this. Pay attention to when his son speaks hes not as sad as the woman ..

Her father did go through a lot. I am not sure how old you are...but he suffered extreme emotional and physical abuse, drug abuse, two divorces, corrupt executives, extreme IRS penalties, living in his car, and ultimately being shot by his father.
Could be drugs, illness, or simply could be relief. She went up against some heavy weights. This case could have bankrupted the family if it had dragged along.
Perhaps she is tearing because she understands that she is now in the eyes of millions; who will look up her from her days of performing, and compare it to how she looks now. That is traumatizing.
Disgusting. Marvin, as a musician, would have himself said that what Pharrell and that Canadian guy with the flapping head did making Blurred Lines was merely grooving in a similar timefeel and tonality to his Got To Give It Up, which itself was just a disco beat with a 1 4 5 progression and Marvin's inimitable vocal sttyling. Musican's do this all the time and understand it is not infringement. You cannot copyright 'essence' as Nona should well know, and leave the bones. It would be the bones that are copyrighted, and they know better. Just a massive moneygrab and a very very bad, disturbing precedent for creatives all over the nation.
Nona actually is still gorgeous, she just gained some weight, and I noticed she lost several teeth and this is affecting her speech. Now that they've won the lawsuit, she definitely has the money to fix her teeth well. And I'm not being sarcastic here, I love Nona. If the drugs didn't get the best of her, she would've been more successful coz she is very talented.
She's still gorgeous but she just got caught up like most celebrities do. Who knows what else she's dealing with!? And I also believe that Prince did break her heart if what they're saying is true about that little gal: "Mayte!" And the same way she cheated with Prince on Nona, 3 years down the road, the same thing happened to her!!!! I loved Prince but let's keep it 💯!!!, Prince didn't date black women! They were either mixed race or half something else... And if Nona's mom wasn't 'mixed race', he wouldn't have dated her either!!! Love me some Prince though!!! #rip #💜💜💧💧🎸🎤🎵
Marvin Gaye was a awesome singer whatever was going between closef doors nobody really knows only the people that live there people always add and take out when it comes to media and magazines in newspapers but the really one that suffer in there was Marvin's kids and wife and he didn't get up the sentence he should have got anymore but and I believe they can move forward may God bless
"Happy" IS NOTHING LIKE "Ain't that peculiar". These people are being delusional and high on power. If they ever take Pharrell to court over it, I hope they lose HARD.
Miriam C Well Miriam we the viewing public aren’t privy to everything that the family had to endure during the course of the proceedings. She was old enough to remember her late Father and probably has lots of feelings about the loss and his legacy. Her and her younger brother sound a lot like Marvin. He was a very emotionally expressive person. They should have permission from the Gaye estate...
It was a 5 million dollar verdict...She probably has memories of her father being stolen from, hard times, him living in a van, divorces, and ultimately being shot by someone he loves.
I hope they don't come after me for my Marvin Gaye/ October London mashup?!!!😂😂😂 I love music more than I love money, just paying homage to Marvin Gaye because he was one of a kind!!!
all of you that are saying you don't see what the problem is then why didn't they try this shit with Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder?... The Gaye family had every right to sue especially when you are arrogant enough to say that you created the beat in a day and then go on to win numerous Awards and make tons of money off of Marvins creation!!..... its a disservice to a man that put his blood, sweat and tears into his artistry and shared it with the world only to have someone with no original talent take on his musical persona.... if you agree with Pharrell then sadly you'll let others run completely over you in your personal life without bothering to hit the brakes.
Common Sense would tell by your logic, that every artist copies or takes from some other artists at some point. Aaliyah literally covered the song and they are not suing her estate!
I told my daughter when that song came out that is Marvin Gaye's song!!! So I brought it to the Chief Fan who threw her Panties at Marvin who met him when he stopped at a Dinner in Gonzales,Louisiana where she and my Aunt worked!!! My Mom said " Who Fucked up Marvin's Song That's got to give it up" baby she don't play when it comes to Marvin and Teddy P
+All I know is when I first heard the song I thought of Marvin's song that I had sung religiously so many times over 30yrs. Actually if it didn't sound like Got to Give it Up I would have never attached myself to it. Pharrell made a big mistake and now he has to own up to it. This year the courts upheld the verdict.
Good Evening. Your mother wasn't the only who was screaming who fucked up Marvin's song. When I heard that Marvin's wife Jan and their children were being sued by Robin, Pharrell and TI, I was pissed and I listed to both songs to see if it was sampled. After listening to the long version of Got To Give It Up 5 times, I was screaming they sampled this song and they sampled the bass line, percussion and Marvin's ad-libs. Even music fans who were born in the 80's and 90's said that they stole Marvin's song and many of them lit them up on social media.
First of all, although I like Pharrell, he and Robin would have no right to donate the money. Marvin's family has a right to be paid any money that would have been due Marvin himself. I'll bet that over the course of Marvin's career the record industry already didn't pay him everything he should have been paid. I'm glad his family didn't get screwed over this time.
I think y'all need to look closer. Nona isn't crying. She just has on a lot of silver shimmery eye makeup. Jeez so what if she was crying. Going through a lawsuit is draining
Pharrell and Robin Thicke are living good and making more money than that little pay off they got.. hope nobody ever listens to Marvin Gaye for inspiration ever again.. his famoly is pissing on his grave
2020'💕 WoW!!😮 Happy for their Victory in the matter! The Music🎶🎵 Industry can be Trechorous😮, Stay Woke and Keep Your Ears In Tuned!!😅😅 Thanks for Sharing!👍✌
What did they do wrong? This story always got told wrong and people didn't pay attention. Robin and Pharrell sued the Marvin Gay Estate first. Now, why would they do that if the song didn't sound a little like Marvin? Pharrell said he did it because he was scared the family would come after him so he went ahead and sued them first. The family was blindsided by being sued by Pharrell and Robin. They didn't even know of the song at that point. They eventually countersued. It just irritates me that people think Marvin's family sued first. That's not what happened. Once they heard the song they agreed it sounded similar.
These are the faces of people who have managed to live their lives by taking other peoples hard earned money... First it was Marvins, now it was This.. Thank God Ed won!
I’m not understanding these comments. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. If someone stole from your parent, some of you wouldn’t hesitate to file a lawsuit. I’m not sure why these people are being met with hate.
Artists should make their OWN beats, if they’re incapable of doing that, just ask for permission and pay the fee! R.I.P. Jan Gaye who just passed away yesterday on December 6th.
Isn't she a sad sight to behold:-( I blame her parents. That's all she witnessed growing up. It's been told. M & J did drugs right in front of their kids. Then, mom did drugs with Nona. DESPICABLE!!!
You know what, I tend to believe it...that mamma of their has been a bad influence. I hope for her sake she beat the drug scene.Marvin sure didn't. He probably was high on the day he died. How sad😞.
All they had to do was ask the family for permission to sample a part of Marvin's song! I am quite sure that they would have said yes, especially with Pharrell being involved.
But doubt that they wouldve let it go in the name or art their not musicians or artist to be exact.. Any artist will always be happy to see someone inspired and use the soul on a new track or painting
Good Afternoon You're speaking fact. When Angela Winbush wanted to cover and sampled Marvin's original vocals from Inner City Blues, she asked for permission and when Erick Sermon wanted to sample Marvin's classic Turn On Some Music for his hit Music, he asked for permission. What was Robin's Pharrell's and TI's excuse? Greed. They also had the audacity to get a judge to agree that they didn't sample and then they sued Marvin's family from getting royalties Well Marvin's family fought back in court and now Robin and Pharrell Got To Give It Up and pay Marvin's family the judgement and 50 percent of the royalties from Blurred Lines.
@@MUSICENCYLOPEDIA Why should they have to pay for feeling or inspiration of music. We wouldn’t have music today if other artist weren’t inspired by other artists. There’s no samples of Marvin Gaye in the song. By your logic, The Beatles should sue Andre 3000 for Hey Ya!!!
@@girlbrittneygirl Good afternoon. I listen to both Blurred Lines and the full length 11 minute version of Got To Give It Up and they did sample the bassline, Marvin's ad libs and percussion into the song. Plus Jan Gaye had sung background on Got To Give It Up so she know what she's talking about. Plus Robin, Pharrell and T.I, had sued Marvin's family 1st, which resulted in the family filing a countersuit and rightfully so. And being inspired doesn't mean sampling songs without permission and suing the artist and/or artist's estate to prevent them from getting royalites.
I have no idea what possessed Robin Thicke to claim that this was not plagiarism. He should have just given credit and shared the wealth...a painful and expensive mistake.
ya’ll! ya’ll! stop the cap. Marvin’s music sounds like inspired from Van Morrison too. Which is way before Marvin’s time. I guess Van’s family can sue him too?

Being a multimillionaire helps a lot (personal trainers, dieticians, etc.). I doubt Nona is a multimillionaire. Well, maybe she is now after winning the lawsuit. But then again, some people just don't take good care of themselves.
Mozart and Beethoven should come back from the dead and sue marvin Gaye’s estate for copy right cause I’m sure they ripped off some of their chords and notes

Lauren smith ... man what planet are you from... most of the whole album was written by Marvin Gaye in London... go do your research and look at the credits.... Marvin even played several instruments on that album which is why he is called a genius... Smokey Robinson had nothing to do with that Masterpiece album... most of Smoky's writing for other artist was done in the late sixties when Motown was starting out.... if you missed all of that then you are certainly missing the point on this particular issue.

The melody to "Happy" is def from "Aint That Peculiar". Nobody said ppl can't do Marvin's work , but just pay his kids for the use of material that they own, thats all. 🤷🏾♀️Jeez. Wtf
No, they won't! These newer artists think they can just use someone's music just because they feel like that can get away with it, its not right. It's pretty much plagersim!!!
New school artist just sit around going through the library of ol' school songs picking which ones they will sample, because they have no originality. This is why r&b is dead like Fred today. They should dig up Marvin's grave and through both Pharrel and Robin both in there and cover them up with Marvin so that he can kick their butts.

I'm glad that they won their verdict. All Robin, Pharell and TI had to do was seek permission to sample Got To Give It Up for their song. Had they did, they would have given them permission and a fair deal But no, they not only sampled the song, but they also sued Marvin's 2nd wife and children to prevent them from getting royalties. Marvin's family countersued and won their countersuit. Plus Jan and Marvin's late brother Frankie had sang background on Got To Give It Up.
