Jan Gaye is real cool. I like how she doesn't throw Marvin under the bus by exploiting his faults and addictive behavior. She is still protective of him. Nice.
If you are a Marvin Gaye fan you would love this book. She put you right in front of him in her book. Made you feel like you were in the room at all times. You disliked the way that he treated her but you still admired him because he was such a free spirit and rather intelligent. If you asked her she would tell you that she would do it all over again if she had the chance.
People forget Jan was still a teen when Marvin courted her. Imagine being 16/17 and one of the most famous musicians wants you and you become his muse! She was enamoured but far too young to understand what she was getting herself into. After dealing with the much older and assertive Anna Gordy, Marvin seemingly tried to mold an impressionable teen to be his wife. I'm sure he loved her but that didn't stop him from cheating and becoming violent.
Marvin was married to AG she was a lot older than he,then he married Janis much younger,he got to be the shot caller with Jan, Anna was a Gordy, strong and her brother was in control of his music.
@@wendylee7242 ,Wow very well said true. And I've always believed that too. If you noticed he was smitten by Jan Beauty and Youth. He even said her named in one of his songs, during the earlier 1970s. The other songs called You Sure Love To Ball & I want You. Well I believed he was talking about and wanted Jan,just listen to the Lyrics of those Songs. That man Mr.Marvin Gaye was Smitten by Jan. Ana Gordy, knew that she had to eventually let go of Mr.Marvin 🤦🏾♀️
Yeah, Tammy! I had breast cancer also a few years ago and it wasn't the best time of my life, but it was tolerable because I had people who deeply love me to get me through it and to give me hope, even the hair loss giving me the proverbial "chrome dome" because I'm a girl. Imagine what Marvin and Tammy would be doing in today's world...
tessamersus. She's not fake to me but she could be. I don't know her. She looks good for someone of her age and all the damaged she done to her body and mind.
"Janice is my girl, in all the world.. there's no one sweeter.. and when She goes to sleep I kiss her face and think I'm the luckiest man in all the world" Marvin Gaye.. I personally cant get beyond this song since I first heard it 1976 or so..
Marvin Gaye...A Divided Soul....he said that Tammi and his relationship was not sexual. His first wife was his muse, then later, his second wife became his muse.
It wasn't just any other relationship. Jan keeps saying that.. They had an affair while he was still married. He saw a 17 yr old and wanted to bang..you can circumvent all you want. She was actually not considered legal at the time. So when she says it was normal it wasn't.
I think it also reflects the time period. In the freewheeling 70s and even decades before, an older man snatching up a child bride want met with the same consternation as today. As for the adultery aspect...yes, that is tawdry, indeed. I'll never forget how she describes Anna Gaye as referring to her as an "it"., and in empathizing with how disrespectfully brazen Marvin and Jan were with living as a couple right in her face, I can't say I blame her.
By the time the 80s came around this was not considered normal, but women and men have been getting married and having kids at 16 and 17 years of age going all the way back to the turn of the century and before
She did her best to normalize a whole immoral mess! He was screwin' & impregnated the 16 year old niece (whichever one of those 16-17 year old children came first) at the same time. Talk about "flaws". Chile, bye!!
Awesome book! Jan "holding back"? Read the book!!! Then you'll know, she's not "holding back"! She's a very sincere and honest lady, and it took a great deal of courage to write such an honest book about her bittersweet relationship with Marvin.
She was definitely used😕being exposed to the industry by her family then Marvin!!! All the drugs an freaky partying..Marvin loved her but he had been turned out himself....🤐
I'm glad Janice got to tell her story. I hope that she got permission to reveal details of other artists drug use & lifestyle because she really exposed a lot. It's sad that she didn't have the best example of parents, which caused her to begin the process of destroying herself at such a young age and use her body as her gift. I'm super glad that she got cleaned and I pray for healing for her and all their families.
May she rest in paradise and be one with Marvin again. Even though he was toxic, they both were on drugs at the time and both did things that weren’t good but that’s life. Their story is beautiful and Jan is one of the luckiest women in the world for getting such an experience. Much Love to them both❤
@@SUBLIMEGOD He was extremely unhappy with Jan. Marvin was unhappy in general and really needed therapy. However, how happy or good is a relationship when all you do is stay faded and strung out? And he helped her get strung out...and pushed her to sleep with other men. That's not love. Their relationship was built on lust, sex, drugs, and a codependency. And then he didn't want her anymore. You say he was miserable with Anna, but he made sure Anna was by his side in the last year/s of his life.
@@SimplyBeingTT I read her book and his biography and he always said Jan was the love of his life. Do your research goofy. No relationship is perfect. Their relationship was of it’s time. It was the fucking 70s. Lots of relationships were very open and Influenced by drugs at the time. Doesn’t mean she wasn’t the love of his life.
Thank you Jan for your honesty and insight into what Marvin was like. He touched the heart of so many millions of people. You were there for him and I respect you for sharing your life with him. Much love to you Jan! ❤
He is a good interviewer. Network news channels should take notes. He does not interrupt her every second. He asks questions and listens as she responds.
This book was very good. Marvin had some ways. I left with more music to add to my music library. He was a very troubled man near his end. His brother Frankie and others tried to help him to no avail. Love you Marvin.
I have always been obsessed with the relationship between Marvin and Janis.I have always listened to the I Want You album and just knew he was singing every word to her.Her book was amazing. However,I love and respect Anna Gordy-Gaye.
@@christyjackson4835 it doesn't mean that he didn't love her. AND let's not forget how petty he was with, "Here My Dear". Masochistic Beauty is just the pain talking...... Marvin was simply an artist who couldn't come from any other place but one of truth---he was angry AF w/her and that's how he felt at the time. he's said in his other works that if she ever left him that he'd be heartbroken/devastated----i believe that losing her drove him over the edge.....he didn't last much longer past their relationship ending....
@@plmitch girl. Listen. Marvin used Jan. He used her and fell out of love. He fell out of love with life itself because he became an ADDICT and lost his passion to sing and create more music. Read 2 books: My Brother Marvin by his sister Zeola Gaye. And Divided Soul by David Ritz. Marvin beat Jan. He broke her ribs, turned her into an addict, and wanted her to fk other men. She refused to let him see his children in the days before he died and that also hurt him deeply. I have read so much and watched so many documentaries on MG. You are romanticizing his relationship with Jan. They were just people like you and me. Jan accepted my Facebook friend request years ago and we inboxed each other many a time through the years. She told me once that she was like any other woman in an abusive marriage -- that she was a "victim of domestic violence", her exact words. This woman was just a young girl at 17 with a superstar who introduced her to hard drugs, orgies, and his insanity. Jan had affairs with Rick James, Frankie Beverly, Teddy Pendergrass, and all kinds of other men because she and Marvin were in an open relationship and she was just as screwed up and promiscuous as he was. Some of your facts and statements are off. You are obviously a MG fan like me but you are perhaps younger than me and therefore not as wise or mature enough yet to see that this man tormented others, including Jan and including himself because of his own unhappiness and mental illness. He wanted to die because he hated himself. He hated his father. He wanted his father to kill him. Keep reading about him and unpeeling the layers of this onion. It's much deeper than Jan. It goes back to his childhood when he was beaten by his father and raped by his uncle at the age of 14. Y'all need to grow up. His story is about more than this one woman. He was not in love with her when he died. He hated her. He was paranoid. He tried to commit suicide multiple times. He beat his Father many a time prior to the day he was killed too. Jeez 🤦🏾♀️ it's so much you obviously don't know.
@@christyjackson4835 Nope.....I actually read ALL those books and i came to the exact same conclusions that you did. as far as me being young, i'm not really that either. i am from Detroit, MI and i had a family member who worked as a domestic for Anna (and Marvin) when they were married, so i know quite a bit about Marvin's life (in his 1st marriage) prior to him starting up with Jan. that being said, artists are different than other people----i am an artist myself and i understand how they view things. Jan can only tell you things from HER OWN point of view, but she can't give you perspective FROM the man who created---you have to listen to HIM for that. if you looked into the lives of MANY a creative, you would most likely find many things you would find displeasing, distasteful, sometimes even deplorable (as in this situation), but it's often times where creatives, "muse". WE ALL romanticize what it takes to get to the art we're consuming---and i think that's the greater message here. i loved Marvin as a CREATIVE, but i am NOT AT ALL romantic about anything having to do with his life....and i'm sure, through a lot of their experiences, abused people as well as their abusers (often the abusers were abused themselves, as in this case) would speak differently about what they thought, "love" was to them. as someone who has (and currently IS) studying human behavior (to work in the healing arts), i don't like to completely dismiss feelings and actions---it's better to dismantle and then process them in a healthy way....
Just Finished Jan's book. in my quest to soke up every word, video, and song pertaining to my favorite artist ever. i must say was skeptical going in but i thought the book was honest and excellent. was very pleasantly suprised. thanks for sharing Jan
Great interview, no one knows her story but her. Next time you are interviewed Mrs. Gaye, please tell us about those ballads Marvin would sing to you. The "Bobby Scott" recordings. I read your book, I truly enjoyed it, the writing was beautiful.
He has always been My favorite male singer of All time, but the more I learn about him , I learn that he was a very Sick, confused, craze individual, on a personal note, maybe that’s why he was sooo talented!
Janice was gorgeous when she was younger.. but possibly one of the greatest albums ever created was inspired by her, her love, and her beauty. "I Want You", - :Soon I'll Be Loving You Again" is my favorite song on it. What's yours?
yeah. like the song "Janis Is My Girl" . It was in Let's Get It On" album. At the time it came out I was like, who us this Janis chick? She sho got Marvin's nose WIDE open. LOL
well unfortunately, I wasn't alive when those albums were created, but I came across his musical catalog over 10 years ago, help me through some of the best and worst times... A person wish they could've found love the way they had!!
I have a few favorites. I want to be where you are, come live with me angel, feel all my love inside, soon I'll be loving you again, and since I had you.
First off, Janis is /was fine. Remember, Janis is damn near 60 years old. People age. Though she was the one-time wife of a mega-star, I don't feel that she, post-Marvin, necessarily lived that "Rodeo Drive" lifestyle of Hollywood once-royalty (facelifts, personal trainers, regular injections, personal chefs). She seems to be pretty natural in her physical appearance, and I'd like to repeat, she's almost 60 years old.
Yes she's VERY beautiful and to be honest she doesn't even look that seriously. Fame ain't for EVERYONE it requires entirely TOO much just like you said surgery this surgery that gotta fit in with the damn Hollywood women ect. She much rather stay out of the limelight and was a mother for her kids. I wouldn't have wanted my kids always in the spotlight either.
I don't think she was beating around the bush at all. Usually when a person is being interviewed about a book, they don't want to reveal too much. They'll give you just enough, so you can buy the book.
Tammy Terrell was a gorgeous woman, with her beautiful skin and hair and a body to make any man sweat and want to chase her down the Motown hallways! Her voice was delicious, in my opinion, like butter, and perfectly tuned to sing with Marvin. What a great duo they would have been over the years...sad he died.
I read the book and I loved it! Show me a different side of Marvin Gaye, the human side. He suffered a great deal and mostly did it to himself. I assume he felt it would make him a greater artist and it did. He suffered for us.
@@rosewelton2904 I didn't know the man, do you? Why do you think this lady is tell her story? Just because someone was talented and famous don't mean they didn't have their own demons that they was living with.
@@melvincarter9640 if you could write and sing like marvin, i and a ton of other people would be saying you helped us through some stuff. instead we just say "don't knock the prince of soul"
I met Jan back when we both lived in LA. She was working for a small film production company. We met there and about two weeks later she called and asked me on a date! We dated for about a year-friends for many more. Very surreal dating/being "part of" Marvin Gaye's life...I'm listening to this with my eyes closed-hearing Jan's voice as I have a thousand times on the phone...missing her.
@@TempeSoldier123 Not that I need to prove myself to a rude person like you but; Of all the people on the planet, you really think someone who make up a story about (a little known "celebrity) like Jan Gaye? IF I was going to make up a story it would have been about someone everyone knows-like Madonna-not someone so few know.
@@leonardodalongisland wow, just wow. Your lies about Jan are something else. Did you date Halle Berry too? Let me guess: you impregnated Whitney Houston before she married Bobby Brown, huh?
I am currently reading the book Marvin did have some Ways about himself Like any human but he was a very trouble soul.Streaming from his childhood .Janis wasnt holding back thank you for sharing your story❤️RIP MARVIN 💕💕💕I love his music and I love him
24pekanpie Lies. She told so many lies. Did she mention the part where she poisoned Marvin’s marijuana supply after she and her mom took out a $1 million life insurance policy on him . ??
I finished the audio book in 2-days. I feel Jan was very truthful and I wish she had narrated the audio book. It was so insightful. She did a fantastic job.
I read the book.I loved it.Made you feel like you were right in the room with him. She didn't touch on his so called bi sexual relationships. She did refer to an incident when he told her that he was attracted to a movie star in passing but she never flat out revealed it .Quincy Jones was the one that referred to his association with Marlon Brando. Even though he had a serious drug issue he was highly intelligent and seemed very likable. Thank you Jan.
My question is, how does Quincy know 🤔???? And, why isn't Quincy speaking on his own liaisons with men. Marvin is not here to confirm or deny, so therefore, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
@@thetarotdetective3363 A tell all of lies. And yes, I'm aware that Q is probably bisexual. That's why he feels the need to lie on a man that he desires.
That’s so messed up, she was so beautiful and innocent. He got her into drugs, perverted sex, abused her mentally and physically. He manipulated her and God bless for her breaking free of that nonsense. It took her years to get over drug addiction and their daughter Nona had become an addict as well. To think, Marvin’s dad was an abusive mess and I’m sure he went through as well - so sad the pathology
Cocaine is a helluva of a drug, it can have you getting aroused by some perverted stuff. I think a lot of Marvin's sexual perversions was coke fuelled.
Thank you for sharing. I still remember vividly the day I heard Marvin Gaye died. I remember the room I was in, where I was standing, the time of day. It's like the shock of hearing it, that moment, I froze in time. Marvin was a very gifted man, and left us with so many beautiful songs. I'm just thankful for the time, we had him, with us.✌
I think he admired and respected her, (Anna) more. He loved Jan just in a more twisted and sadistic way. She was too young and did not know what she was up against. She was seeking his approval and validaton; whereas Anna could take himor leave him, she chose herself rather to destruct with him. As the aying goes there is a danger in loving someone too much. On another note: "Anna 's Song" is out of this world, it speaks volumes. That entire "Here My Dear" album does.
Jan and I were in a Mass Media class at Dorsey High school a group of talented 11th and 12th graders from L A city schools about 10 of us, it was a great. We would travel to meet at Beverly Hills High School . She went to L A High. We were friends, I was young, didn't realize when when she would walk with me across Dorsey High's campus that she liked blackness. We would be at my locker and the sisters would eyeball us. I didn't know how to take it...then, it wasn't cool, boy was I stupid. She married Marvin. I didn't/couldn't see that she was half black. The sweetest girl.
