I actually started out doing graphics for Elf Mania but pulled out of two reasons. School / collision with semi pro pixeling. But mostly because I saw how tech / visual focused it was and that the gameplay aspect of it was not taking into account at all. Like it was no way it was going to play well. Both tied to the joystick but also that we had both space allocated for decent amount of moves and animation frames

I used to love overhead racers but these days I find them a bit frustrating. Funny thing because I absolutely would have played ATR back in the day. Behind the Iron Gate was certainly compromised visually but it is at least it’s own thing. Not one to bother with. You introduced me to Benefactor & I’m glad you did because it’s a gem. The characters are tiny but beautifully animated & the puzzles get challenging without getting unfair. Definitely one to play if you love the Amiga. Never played Banshee in the day as I moved to PC instead of AGA Amiga but playing it emulated now it’s as good as some arcade shooters of the time. Base Jumpers is another one you introduced me to & yeh, 1 player is playable but multiplayer is fun. Funnily enough I can say the same for Chaos Engine… 1, Chaos Engine 2 is disappointing any way around. Citadel is really impressive but I missed out back in the day as I’d moved on to PC & the Play Station. & FYI I’ve played Doom in a postage stamp on a point of sale till. Deluxe Galaga is another I never played originally but would recommend to retro gamers now. Doman’s graphics have a very hand drawn look that reminds me of some early Windows games? Shame it never got an English release but I doubt it’s hard to follow? Elfmania adds a different spin on the beat-‘em-up with the fantasy basis but doesn’t look like that really adds much to the game? Fun video, thanks. A lot of the games here are relatively late in the system’s life & it’s a little surprising they were exclusive but I guess by ‘94 - ‘95 the gap between Amiga & PC was getting bigger & harder to manage?

I'm not sure what my favourite overhead racer would be... I liked Super Cars 2 a lot, ATR seemed kinda tough to me always. Fun, but tough. And then all Skidmarks games had a certain charm to them (racing cows!), but they really spread their wings on systems with 2MB of RAM, which I did not have. And finally, I moved to DOS, and Death Rally was one I played the most there. Oh, and Rally Speedway on C64 was amazing! Behind the Iron Gate was something I could never get used to. It seemed not to know what it wanted to be. And didn't even had the presentation to justify it being so odd. Definitely not my cup of tea. Benefactor I love! To this day. It's great. And, would really benefit from a modern re-release or remake for Game Pass. And Banshee was impressive. Not my fave on the Amiga, but one of the best shooters on it, no doubt about that. I don't like Base Jumpers alone, and neither any of the Chaos Engines. I like them all with someone else. Odd, I know, but that's me. xD I played Citadel a lot on my A500, but if I'm to be honest I probably run it twice as much just to see the intro... If I was left on a desert island, with access to electricity and Amiga, and could only pick one game to keep, Deluxe Galaga would definitely be in a top 5 before I would pick the winner. But despite how much I love it, and that it's probably my fave Amiga game, I wouldn't have picked it. Doman is an unofficial follow-up to Franko: The Crazy Revenge, shares the dev, same graphical style, similar gameplay, but it's just a tad bit better. Objectively speaking, cause to an average polish former Amiga owner, Franko would be better. It takes place in one of the cities, and caricatures the times it released in very well. At least in the country. Yeah, few newer games in this one. And these are best to show off what could be done on the Amiga, but there'll be some older games too. Don't worry about that. :)

Behind the Iron Gate is using an interesting Sub-Wolf 3D ray casting technique. MIDI Maze, the first FPS, used an untextured ray-casting style technique on the Atari ST in 1987. This game seems to be doing something closer to real ray casting. Most of the surfaces have no textures, but the walls basic shading with extreme banding due to the hatching involved. I have to wonder why they couldn't have used different colors for different blocks of wall. The movement is a little jumpy, there are some billboard sprites, and it a few of the items on the wall look like they're being scaled and rotated as well. I have to wonder why there isn't an Amiga port of MIDI Maze/Faceball 2000. As a rule, if the Atari ST could do it, so could the Amiga. The Amiga was still viable in 1991-1992 when the Faceball 2000 ports came out on consoles. Benefactor is in this category which might be considered the "Lode Runners". "Space Panics" may be more honest since it was first, but "Lode Runner" was the breakout and the lasting name. Single screen puzzle platformers where the guy is smaller than a normal platformer and climbs a bunch. Banshee - It's Core Design, so of course they know what they're doing. Base Jumpers - more like an arcade platformer. The "climb to the top while the screen moves" genre was largely from the golden age of arcade games and earliest consoles. Crazy Climber, Spider-Man for the 2600, Alpiner for the TI-99/4A. Except this game is a platformer, kind of like the climbing levels on console platformers where you suddenly couldn't go down, except this is a pure platformer with clear Mario inspiration. It's a clever mix that someone could probably remake today into an indie game. The 4 player competitive feels would have been right at home in the world of quirky late 1980's early 1990's arcade games. Even The Bitmap Brothers knew the Amiga was over in 1996. Wikipedia claims that two of the Amiga magazines that previewed the game in 1995 weren't around to review it. I'm surprised this wasn't ported to PC like the previous game, but I suppose they figured that they needed to turn the lights off on the system. I don't know how much of the game was the old game engine, it might have been a really cheap project. Citadel is like what you expect from a system that doesn't have the math to do 3D. The developers made the choice to have the bad framerate. Gamers now may think this is horrible, but we dealt with much worse on flight sims in the 1980s. It's a brave effort, even if those Storm Troopers might have crossed the line of the game was released more widely outside of Poland. If Citadel's Storm Trooper might cause a few copyright issues, "Deluxe Galaga" is a cease and desist order. Doman: 1995 is also pretty late for a clunky looking Barbarian type game, but as a two-person effort that actually got published in 1995 it's not so bad. I feel like you'll be able to find these generic fighters like Elfmania until the end of time. The developers had their twist, but almost none of it involved gameplay which they didn't understand. It was all presentation. And even if they're good at it, that doesn't fix the game (the Shaq Fu problem). The game has a very early 1990's arcade look, and it is good but generic. The purchase model is like Activision's pre-SF2 fighter Tongue of the Fatman, but you have most of the same problems. The fighters largely play the same and throw similar "Normals" (basic attacks) which have very short range (even the guy with a hammer). I haven't seen any special moves in the gameplay footage and there are no supers/other resources during the fight. There are only six fighters, which is near the basement end, and while they are professional looking, they are small by fighting game standards. They have all the character of any basic arcade game enemy. Sound is again professional, but wrong. The game decided to keep the violence low, but there's little intensity. The production quality is above the trash SF2 and MK clone end of the spectrum, but this is not a game I feel like playing.

Well ST and Amiga shared the CPU, and while the ST's run a tiny itty bitty faster, Amiga had dedicated chipsets, which ST lacked. At least in the same quality. So yeah, what run on ST, should run on Amiga. :) I get why you consider Benefactor one of the Lode Runners, but it is soooo much more. It's really one of the most underrated Amiga originals out there, and a really fun title if you can give it your full attention. I once (as a teen) simulated being ill, not to go to school and play Benefactor for two days as much as I could. I got far but never completed it. xD Base Jumpers... I agree. It's very 8bit. And other than the multiplayer gimmick, it's nothing special. Citadel is an odd one. It actually scales with the speed of the system it runs on, but kinda in an early DOS games way and not reasonably. Meaning if you try to run it on a way too fast system (which luckily hardly anyone had), it would be unplayable. xD Doman doesn't look like it, but it's actually really, really fun. Especially with a friend and on a beefy system for all the effects. Though, if I'm to be honest here, other than some extra sound effects and a little reduced loading, I see no difference between running it on a basic Amiga and a really powerful one. Elfmania... Elfmania... You know how Thomas was the tank engine that could? Elfmania is a game that should. But failed. It had all the makings of a great fighter short of the most important thing - gameplay. xD

@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames 11 месяцев назад
Yep, Dangerous Streets was a very special kind of $hit. xD It looked so good on the screenshots, that it could easily lure you in into getting it. But then you had it, you slide the disk in, with a shaking hand, right into your Amiga's disk drive. And it sat there comfortably. Burping and farting as it was loading up. You picked a player, a bit more of those sweet sweet farty sounds, and suddenly it loaded up. And the sounds were quickly met with a smell, a stench, a stink of how bad the game run, how choppy the animation was, and how terrible of a production it was. Clearly well worth the sounds the disk drive made. xD

Those goggly eyes on Batman, omg! XD And the guys in Doman possibly have some implants for some extra muscles where muscles don't normally exist. Are those a thing? Muscle implants? Like breast implants, but for body builders. XD I like the weather effects in Banshee, they're a nice touch. Since you control a plane, does the storm have any effect on the gameplay? That would be an even nicer touch. :D I think that a lot of the game developers making games for the Amiga when its future decline was obvious were aware of the situation and were making those games purposefully. So they did a good job of it, maybe even in the hopes of rescuing the Amiga.
@OldAndNewVideoGames

Long long long time ago, in the ancient times that we know now as the 90s, people were built different, and had different muscles than we do now. And no, the weather in Banshee is mainly cosmetic.
