Latoya Temilton, Laerskool Queenswood, drowned during a school leadership outing.
Latoya’s family claims the school hid the Grade 7 pupil’s accident from them until she was due to return home.
Anele chats to a parent, whose child attends the school, about how she feels about the incident.

Swimming is a vital life skill, yet the expense of lessons can be prohibitive for many families. To address this, governments should consider offering free swimming lessons to all children as part of their educational curriculum. By incorporating swimming into school programs, every child would have equal access to learning how to swim, promoting water safety and healthy living. This initiative would not only remove financial barriers but also ensure that all children, regardless of background, could benefit from this important skill.

I went to a public school and swimming lessons were free, they were part of the PE program. We'd do it once a week, every week. This is where I learnt how to swim. There was no pool at home as I grew up in the township and mom couldn't afford extra swimming lessons. So what you are saying is true and is very much doable.

If tourism sites and campsites provide facilities for the public that involves water, they should be required by law to have life quards and all safety precautions available or risk being shut down.
@tshegofatsothegreat
@tshegofatsothegreat 7 месяцев назад
The parents need to sue the school for negligence. The Department of Education should make a law to never allow schools to take students to trips that involve water at campsites unless if it is a swimming gala where all the safety precautions are in place. Campsites should be required by laws to have life guards at all times around big bodies of water expecially if they cater to schools groups. Parents let's teach our kids to swim, please. If Latoya knew how to swim and this happened then this has to be investigated further.

My condolences to the Temilton family, BUT my question IS where was A teacher OR an adult appointed to supervise the children..?. Someone, or ALL the teachers who travelled with these youngesters MUST to be held accountable. Why were the kids left unsupervised, these were minors that their parents entrusted the teachers with their kids to keep them safe at all times. As a parent im hurting, BUT i'm mostly angry, i'm pissed off..

I remember going out on a school outing myself at Heidelberg Kloof all the way from Soweto. I went on the water slide not knowing how to swim and obviously dropped in like a rock. I struggled to come up but flapped myself up. Thank God it was not deep. As I was struggling the other learners nearby were laughing thinking I was playing. I have a feeling the little girl got in the pool thinking she could stand and most probably unfortunately slipped. 💔💔💔😭😭😭😭

Why would the school tell the parents not to say anything? Seriously..!!! One thing Parktown did very well was dealing with the parents who's children were involved when Enoch tragedly passed away... Seriously we cannot be losing our kids due to teachers neglency...we pay a lot of money to these schools for teachers to just relax around our children

Yoh this school needs to be investigated and any self respecting parent must take them out of that terrible place. They are negligent. And even worse covering it up. This is unacceptable, people that don't have common sense or proper qualifications and some psychological background check to deal with primary school kids should not be allowed to have children near them.
