In 2009, former Welsh rugby sensation Gareth Thomas came out and since then has become a role model for other young men who are struggling with their sexuality. In this deeply honest documentary, Gareth reveals how we became a master at "playing the straight man" but how he also got angered by the stress of keeping his secret for so long.

Thank you for standing up, to not only make peace with yourself, but also to help others to see their piece of sunlight in our daily living. You seem to be a very honest, a person with feeling for others, and for me, it is highly appreciated. May I wish you joy, happiness, peace, tranquility, blessings and prosperity.

Second time of watching. It breaks my heart to see such pain. This will help lots of other people, but in 2024 we should be able to just be ourselves.; we may have moved on a bit. Lovely comments below.

Absolutely agree. Ridiculous that anyone should go through such pain. Accept a person for who they are.

What a great man. He has done his country proud not just for his accomplishments in the greatest sport there is but also for the amazing things he has done for sports personalities and the general public. Great man and just a plus that he is also Welsh.

He's my idol and my hero and I simply love him because he's so genuine and so honest and sometimes brutally honest I was surprised when I found out he'd been suicidal so many times I've been there but I've been there for a different reason a devastating reason I lost my beautiful strong inspirational brother on the 22nd of August 2015 and the man who killed him was aquitted of killing my brother and ten other men. Jacob was my hero my best friend and I miss him everyday I have had so many moments of wanting to just follow Jacob and hug him again one more time....

That’s so awfully sad to hear. I’m sure your brother Jacob would be super proud of your strength and that you are living for him now too. On your difficult days remember he would want you to be happy and fulfilled and to never give up so stay strong. He’s still with you always. 🕊️ 💛 🕯️

It took me until my 30s to come out and nobody believed me as I always seemed to “straight” and during that time like Gareth I was always so angry and so ashamed of who I was and in some way I still am.

I can totally relate to this story. Keeping a secret, creating a fake lifestyle and lying to friends and family. I was a professional soldier with rank I in the 80’s, and having tell lies and create deceptions was something I did very well, but emotionally you pay a price for that. In the end enough was enough and I came out as well, and it was actually much easier than I expected.

Funny part was everyone called me terrible names but no one asked me why, or what made me such a target for the bullies throughout school. Writing my book, A COLOURED IN FULL FLIGHT, THE BOY FROM THE BARRACKS, made it clear I was abused and bullied in the name of teasing.

Seems introspective, but its really about being who you are. That's all that matters. I wish it wasn't such an isolated part, from previous times. I know there is more progress for the future against homophobia. Myself I feel more complete as a person and I was really young coming out. So, if anyone is struggling then its a journey to oneself. It take courage to be open. Liked this documentary.

@@jackthomas3613 His story is uncannily similar to mine. I was diagnosed in 2004. Someone who I once considered a friend and confided in at the lowest point in my life used to hold it over me as a way to manipulate me and control me. I told my friends and family about my diagnoses so that she could no longer terrorise me. I will never forget that very lonely time. I wouldn't wish it on an enemy. And I am a nobody! Can't imagine how it must have been for Gareth being in the public eye. My heart goes out to him. Hope he is doing well.

Why not ask? re the dad? People struggle alone. People don't necessarily view themselves as others can- especially in sexuality in ways others can see or recognise. Befriend and ask, but do not betray. Betrayal is a disgrace.

I think it’s more a result of society sticking their nose into people’s sexuality and making them feel ashamed of themselves. He must have been tormented for years and that’s no way to live a life. Society is to blame for both his and his ex wife’s torment.
