I learned many years ago when our family visited the Soo locks that water actually isn’t pumped into the locks, it is just allowed to flow from the higher level of Lake Superior into the lock, which raises the water level and any ship or boats that are in the lock. Conversely when going from the level of Lake Superior to the lower level of the St. Mary’s River, water is simply allowed to flow out of the lock, lowering the ship to the level of the river system. No pumping required. Valves control the flow of water in and out of the locks.
