If you love the Citroen Ami but need something a bit bigger and faster, Citroën has the answer - the Oli. The French brand is doubling down on its radical designs for electric cars with a concept which points the way to a new family sized electric car with radical features - including mesh seats and cardboard panels - to make it lighter, more efficient and more affordable.
And we’ve been just been granted an exclusive FIRST DRIVE around the streets of Paris.
Described by Citroen as a ‘laboratory on wheels’ which aims to buck industry trends for heavier, more complex and expensive electric cars, the Oli provides just what Citroën thinks customers need and want. Supported by the inventive use of responsible materials and a sustainable production process, its target vehicle weight of around 1,000kg makes it significantly lighter than most comparable compact SUVs, even those with petrol power.
But what is the Oli like to drive? Join Ginny in Paris as she takes to the wheel in what is one of Citroen’s wildest concept cars ever. Is this the future of electric cars? Would you consider a car like the Oli? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Citroen Oli
40kWh battery
1,000kg target weight
68mph top speed
Cardboard panels
240 mile target range
£20k estimated price

But isn't that just part of the appeal (or not) - some folk will not touch it, others will see it fit their needs. @jamesleate Год назад
@@MohamedTarikRochdi I laughed so hard when they revealed the Cybertruck. I genuinely thought it was a bad joke and the real one was hiding somewhere. I honestly hadn't laughed that hard in a long time. The thing is there is good styling and bad styling, it isn't subjective. A well styled car can be subjectively viewed as ugly or attractive. Styling is about cohesive ideas and a strong set of cues that portray those ideas. I hate all the bland clones too, but I would prefer to see an alternative that is better rather than an obvious mess of mixed boxes and random shapes with no vision other than to be as "different" as possible. The determination to be different can be a positive thing, but it can also lead to an incoherent mess such as this. At least the Cybertruck (however comical it looks) has a cohesive design language and looks like it was designed by an individual or a team working together. This looks like every element was shipped out to a different design house who were banned from ever speaking to each other. I'm certain that certain elements have been based on the crayon drawings of a toddler. It is simply poor design in my view.

I love the design and all the philosophy behind it. Most car makers are upgrading their traditionally most affordable models to upper segments to make them more profitable without giving any alternative, and here we have Citroën adressing the issue in a creative way. I get that making affordable cars with all the standard features we are used to is getting less and less profitable for car makers, but i think Citroën is hitting the nail on this one: instead of selling you an "outdated" cheap base car, they are offering a new one that seek to adress today's needs.

@powertothesheeple5422

Most automakers are converting their most popular and most profitable models to EV (at least in the US). That's why they are making electric SUVs and full-size pickup trucks way more than cars (the US LOVES that crap). Nobody is making new EV's on "outdated" base model ICE platforms, just not happening. And how is this not a cheap base car? The car is partially made of cardboard and it looks like Master Chief time traveled his truck to the 80's to have the interior redone.
@clorox1676
@clorox1676 Год назад
@@powertothesheeple5422 By "not a cheap base car" I mean it was designed from scratch to be unexpesive, instead of taking some existing model (sometimes old) removing features, which is typically what car makers do to lower costs in developing countries or what, for example Renault is doing with Dacia.

Really interesting car and I love how it breaks the mold in terms of looks. I wonder if the vertical front window is truly such a good idea. Yes it probably reduces the need for AC since there's less direct sunlight, but it also increases wind resistance. For city driving that might make sense, and due to the limited speed you probably don't want it if you regularly drive long distances anyway. I wonder if further city optimizations might have made more sense as well - it does seem quite large. And seems to have a good amount of cargospace. I'm not a big fan of the lack of a screen as well. Especially for navigation it makes sense, but considering that this is supposed to be quite modular, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a screen module available.

There are ways to get the air to just go above the flat windscreen at speed rather than hit it. Citroen have done that to a small degree with the gap in the lights redirecting air up to push air over the windscreen. It is a really good idea that can have clever work arounds to still have near equivalent aerodynamic efficiency. As for lack of a screen I would imagine putting one in yourself wouldn't be that hard at all.

Excellent piece. The effort Citroen have put into the OLI is what every manufacturer of products of any kind should be doing - right now. The ideas of disposable products and planned obsolescence were always stupid and nothing more than a convenient way for corporations to make more money all the while screwing us and the environment. I keep my cars a long time (16 years for my '85 GTI) and the OLI being "designed to last decades rather than being disposable" is music to my ears. All of us to some degree have bought in to the marketing hype of buying a new car every few years and wanting the newest, greatest thing at all times. What needs to happen now is for people to realize that is BS and that they have been manipulated all along the way. Cars and almost any product should follow the ideas in the OLI. It's not that hard to do and there are plenty of people in the markletplace who want their stuff to be designed and built like this. Example: I don't care if my phone is a few millimeters thicker in order to have a replaceable battery. Same for cars, computers, tablets etc.

So in '92, he bought a Citroen AX, brand new. Drove it for 9 years, gave it to me dad. He drove it for 6 years, sold it to a friend, who then sold it to someone else, who ended up selling it back to me dad. For fifteen year's me dad drove that thing, fixed it, repaired it, looked after it. Another five went by and we gave it a paint job, looked absolutely gorgeous. Dad's retiring this year and since i got me license, he gave it to me. I drove a little 125 keeway chopper but he insisted: "Motorcycles arent great for rain, so keep the car. Peek at the water and the oil every week, and let me know if it blows up, i got great insurance." 675,238 kilometers. Same engine, clutch, wheel's, panel's, seat's and just about everything but the tires and paint are original from the assembly line. I'll likely die before that car does, but it does speak volumes over the quality and craftsmanship of Citroen WHEN they put actual time and effort into designing a reliable and durable car. I think most people need an all rounder car and that just makes it miss that mark imo. I’m curious to see how the upgradability will translate to production cars. Super exciting

My grandma lives in the Beauce region (S-W of Paris) and she bought the Citroen AMi last year. I drove it when I visited France last summer and it was absolutely fun. I loved it even though the speed limit and power are rather limited, but the area is very flat so it's not much trouble. However, she will move to the Cantal in a couple of years and this concept car would be a great upgrade to the AMi for that hilly region. Let's hope the OLi will be in production by then. 🤞

If you look at the Cactus concept car vs the production model, its virtually identical, which bodes well for the Oli. I love the quirkiness of the Cactus, (which in fact weights less than the Oli at about 990kg )and the Oli takes that to a whole new dimension with its design, practicality and affordability, the fact that everything can be replaced and modified, even 3D printed is pushing cars into the realms of science fiction. My son is seriously into Lego, builds his own designs, I can see him embracing 3D printing and modding his own parts for his car in the future using recycled plastic. My only issue is the windscreen, I can see it being slightly modified to be sloped, other than that, I love it!

I think this looks fantastic, its a bit like a baby Hummer. You know what, that is a very fair point about the internal tech, although I do like having a bigger screen for the sat nav. The materials sound very interesting, I love the wheels.However, thinking about the materials on the outside if its light, is it still safe? I would be very interested to see what it scores on the Euro NCAP. I do really like the utilitarian look of the car. This is very exciting, Citroen are thinking about the long haul.

from the video, the carboard panels are used on the roof and bonnet - so not where the car will be taking impacts. Also remember, a lightweight car has a lot less energy to absorb in a crash.

this car is excellent and the people who designed this clearly understand what the consumer wants. an affordable car with a good range that lasts a long time. the top speed of 68 mph is ever so slightly disappointing, but that speed still allows this car to be used on the motorway, which is what a lot of people need. citroen, please make this car a reality.

It looks cool but Citroen completely misses the mark in my opinion. It could have been an affordable successor to the VW XL1, but they ruined its potential by turning it into a city car. At first I was really excited about how light it was for an electric car, but when I heard its speed is limited because of the massive vertical windshield, they lost me. There's no point in making a car light if you then give it a needlessly high drag coefficient. And for what? To make the windshield easier/cheaper to make? Why are the side windows still curved then?

Wow, that is amazing! I love all of the concepts here. Just bring one out in more relaxing colors, and I'd be happy to buy one. Perhaps a more tilted windscreen for highway driving (living in Finland, range is more important that shade), and a 60kwh battery, but then I'd be really happy in that car!
@clarksonbarry
@clarksonbarry Год назад
With a lowish top speed the benefit of a more "Tilted" windscreen are questionable. Hot in summer. Ice in winter. Heavier. More expensive. Requires thicker pillars. Worse visability especially in rain. More expensive wipers requiring heavier wiper motor.
@sebastiansandvik825
@sebastiansandvik825 Год назад
@@clarksonbarry I get what you are saying. There is an idea behind this, but there could well be a similar version with a tilted windscreen for people that do more highway driving in colder climates. There's room on the market for both.

I think that as it's aimed at city and town driving and being a kid taxi the rear doors would be better if they were sliding doors rather than rear opening ''suicide'' type doors. Being a current Berlingo Multispace owner it's amazing just how useful having sliding rear doors is on a car especially in tight parking spaces.
