Being a pastor myself you are always in the eyes of the public, sometimes no matter what you do its never right. Was osteen wrong? Im not going to judge I'm just going to pray for the man. PEACE 1 glad you asked, we have family there! Church volunteers aren't trained first responders, and at their church they were told to stay put safety at home till the storm is over and if your not dealing with your own home disaster then come help. I just am looking at these terrible comments and thinking that these people commenting must be clueless or just hateful. They told me that Lakewood is doing a wonderful job, and truly they are victims too. This is unwarranted criticism and shallow. Hope you will help educate the people you come in contact with. It's unbelievable how a rumors can become fact for some people.

He stated that the building had flooded before, they weren't prepared, they didn't have the staff in place. It's easy to criticize when you're not the one handling the logistics or taking the heat if anything goes wrong. People need to understand that there's more to making decisions than acting impulsively.
If I remember correctly from what he said in another interview, he said that it had flooded before they got the flood gates, back before they bought it when it was still used as a stadium. He wanted to make sure the flood gates wouldn't fail, and apparently it was much safer for people to be outside or in a building without flood-gates than inside his building. I'd say it has to do with fear of lawsuits. Better they get hurt outside than take the risk of them coming to harm inside his church, where he may be held accountable for them, the thinking goes.

I’m just gonna say what needs to be said here and what everyone else is afraid to say. I wonder exactly how many of these victims actually showed their thanks to God by going to church after they depended on the church to help them so much? I can guarantee you that there was more people at those doors who were needing help from the flood than those who actually show up every Sunday morning to give God thanks. I bet that number is just astounding. That’s how it is. When people are in need, they all of a sudden want to cry out to God for help and the number of people who we’re practically knocking down those church doors was extremely high in statistics. Opposed to when it comes to actually getting up every Sunday morning and going to give thanks to God for providing that help. That number I can assure you all, is at an all time low. They only seek Gods help when they’re in need, but then claim “they don’t have time” to get up and got to church to give him thanks when he provides that help.

People shouldn't criticise the Osteens for delivering 'motivational' style sermons loosely based on the Bible. They deliver that style because it's what is currently in highest demand. They are simply catering to people's needs. People have changed, society has changed over the past few decades and the spiritual/psychological needs of people has changed. The reason Lakewood church is so popular is precisely because they have adapted to these changing needs. Don't criticise them for giving people what they want.

The weather predictions greatly underestimated its impact and yet the death toll is still somehow far less than Katrina. On a social and political level the ball was dropped somewhere because residents should have had designated safe houses ahead of time. The city just didn't think it would be this bad. I agree that as a pastor his doors should have been open but there's proof of flooding on his property and like I said before this stuff takes preparation.
