FROM OUR ARCHIVE: During her time as Chief Juvenile Judge in a northwest Indiana juvenile court, Superior Court Judge Mary Beth Bonaventura saw a vast array of juvenile cases during her time on the bench. Judge Bonaventura ruled on a range of juvenile cases, from child abuse and neglect cases to juvenile delinquency cases, to termination of parental rights and adoption cases. During this extensive sit-down interview, Judge Bonaventura reflected on everything she had seen during her almost three decades on the bench, and what she wanted the public to know about the kids and families who came before her. She discussed the detention process from the time of arrest through all juvenile court hearings, how she often reacted to various cases as kids and families testified in court, reflected on the case of former gang member Rodrick Brown and the inspiration she felt after watching him change his life, and how the vast majority of kids in detention are good kids who simply make bad decisions early in life. In her personal life, Judge Bonaventura also adopted a young boy who came into the detention center as a runaway, recusing herself as judge so she could welcome the boy into her family after his time in the system. She expressed how the boy, Sunny, changed her life and made her a mom for the first time.
Update: Judge Bonaventura is now a private judge. Sadly, her son Sunny died from a sudden illness at age 28.
