Only the brightest and most hardy of men in Nepal makes it into basic training to begin with, since historically, everyone wants to join the Armed Forces of either Britain, India, the Singaporean Police, or since the early 90s, also the Nepali forces. The pre-civil war Nepali forces was very small and your chances were nonexistent compared to becoming a British Gurkha or Indian Gorkha. Evidently, some spooks in Russia knows this about Nepali society, and they've pumped the airwaves in Nepal with a whole lot of lies. Especially in Tik Tok. Exceedingly few ex-servicemen of Nepali roots will be susceptible to Russian lies, for anyone who has fluent comprehension of English (read: anyone who has served in the British, Indian, Singaporean, or Nepali armed services) will know how ridiculous Russian lies are. But Russia isn't trying to recruit the cream of the crop. Russia is going after the average worker who daydreams of an army contract that is forever out of reach for most of Nepali men. Until now. And that's the sort of folks who gets sent to the meat grinder. People who at best know only basic English, and thus wouldn't have much of a chance at understanding the news about what's actually happening in Ukraine. Gorkha and Nepali Army troops fought against the Imperial Japanese in Myanmar, forcing back the brutal Imperialists at Imphal and Kohima alongside their Indian and Commonwealth contemporaries. In their occupation of postwar Japan alongside the British, they conducted themselves civilly and with utmost discipline. Nepali constables staved off racial violence in mid 20th century Singapore, and did their part upholding Malaysian sovereignty against Sukarno's aggression in that same time period. When Yugoslavia fell apart, British Gurkhas and Nepali Army troops did their part in Bosnia, and Nepali armed servicemen from all branches are a cornerstone of UN peacekeeping operations ever since the 1990s. Frankly speaking, I never thought I'd ever seen Nepalis among the russian invaders. But such is the power of russian disinformation combined with desperation of the vast majority of the men who didn't make the cut against a very selective recruitment process across 4 nations and their many branches of armed services. To fight in this war is not a trivial commitment. All I ask is that aspiring, informed, and qualified Nepalis be given the opportunity to do the right thing and give their family a chance at greater opportunities. Its very sad that the russians are corrupting the traditions of the Gurkhas. This guy was actually wrong about something. It is legal for Nepalis to join the british army and serve in the legendary Gurkha regiments. When Nepal became independent that was kept between the two countries because of the proud traditions that the Nepalis built up serving as Gurkhas. But the standards to join and serve are very high. The difference is that the Gurkha regiments offer a long term career path and they are very well cared for and led.

If they work in logistics and logistics help the fighting part of the army to perform and kill, then a logistics worker in the military is accomplice in what that military does, incl. k!lling people. As for 'mercenaries', no, not 'by definition'. They fit the definition of mercenaries except on one important point: They are officially part of a national military which in turn is officially responsible for them. Mercenaries are not. Wagner fighters are mercenaries. They moment they (those who did) signed up with the russian MoD they instantly reverted from mercenaries to being legal fighters in the russian military. For this point alone these Nepali can't be mercenaries by definition, but might (or not) be it in mind and soul. By definition they are legal fighters.

Nepalis need money and jobs, they are tough people not cry babies. The only issue is technical education is worthless. The British understood their hardy fighting spirit in a battle in 1835 and incorporated Gorkhas into the army and still do. The best thing is Ukraine and supporters employ them.
Big number of Nepalese men used to be recruited in Indian army’s Gurkha regiment. Current Nepalese government tilting towards China made them ban their men from fighting for India. Result- In desperation these guys will now fight as mercenaries for anyone.

Nepalis are in general very good at basic conversational English. Reading comprehension for world events and history would be more suspect among regular workers, hence why they remain susceptible to russian disinformation and deceit.
English is good (enough) because next to Nepali, English is the next language widely received in school. You go any corner of Nepal, almost everyone speaks English with the exception of old folks and village farmers.
@carlustin4034 I don't think so. It has been a trend in Nepal to work logistic labour overseas like cook, cleaner, laundries etc. in a war-torn countries. Nepalese took labour jobs there knowing the risk that one day they could be bombed. This kind of jobs started with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars hired by multi-national countries through agents. Can you guess which supers countries? Nepal is a landlocked country sandwiched between the mercy of China and India. People there knows no seas or global political knowledge of other countries besides the two aforementioned countries. Inflation is high there. Many gets lied to and thrown into the gaunlet with rifles to move forward. Either the Russian shoot your back or you move forward. These Nepalese have no combat experience. There are just civilian in a foreign land. I know they are on the wrong side of stick with carrot hanging but I know many are lied to.

Many of them join thinking they will work in logistical , working in warehouse or driving a Truck far away from battlefield and would go back home with money . Once reached they are sent to the battlezone with a promise to be called back in 2/3 weeks which never comes .
Nepal has a long mercenary culture , soldier are recruited into Indian,British, Singaporean and Bruneiss armies . So it is not surprising for them to join Russian or Ukrainian sides just to make a living he is quite true with his word and just a victim of circumstances

This is a problem. Nepalese make possibly the bravest soldiers on the planet. Even this guy, he was stupid, but he jumped to the occasion without a second thought. Ukraine and US should do something smart like education campaigns and/or, even better, invest in some local enterprises to reduce poverty in Nepal. Because they also make excellent workers.

Aside from that you should know the US and other western countries already have these programs instated for decades. However in these cases it's simple, it's not Ukraine's responsibility to educate invaders. The Nepali "volunteers", as a group of say 4000, add 4 days of absorbable casualties at the now normalized going rate of 1000 casualties a day. Throw in all the foreign "volunteers" and they probably add a month at best. Not much, but it is something.
