I worry all this heavy drinking and chain smoking will bring him to his demise, prematurely. Ironically, it's probably true that his best writing and performances happen when he's off his face.

It's a live auto tune chorus effect. The problem is pitch correction still requires you to be hitting the intended key. If you're off too much it jumps up and gives the slightly robotic effect.
