She's from Manipur so technically she's a Manipuri but not a "meitei" the dominant tribe there and the one which many people associate with the term "Manipuri". She belongs to the Kom tribe which is related to the Kuki-Chin-Mizo tribes. Her real name "Chungneijang" is a Thadou-Kuki word which literally means: Chung= up, above; nei= to have or possess; jang= light as in feather light.
