Resistance training - with body weight, bands, dumbells or in a gym is VITAL for any cancer patient.
It keeps your bones strong, can decrease the risk of recurrence and helps with so many cancer side effects, including fatigue

I am so happy about this post! I found lots of information for training during the treatment but nothing so far how to train afterwards. We would so love to do weight training again, climb mountains and have fun! We are over 60. Thank you so much! By the way - great picture of you at the gym! All the very best, love and hugs!

Dear Dr. O´Riordan, now we might have to find a way to prevent osteoporosis. Are there studies regarding aromatase inhibitor-induced bone loss? Does weight lifting help? What are your suggestions? Is medication really necessary? Thank you so much!

Hi. So pleased to have found you. I have always exercised and have continued after surgery. Now I'm trying cold water swimming but am dismayed to find i can no longer swim after radical mastectomy. The swim coach is v supportive and I'm using her rescue float and learning to do a side swim. However, v weirdly I can't push my legs back down once I'm floating. Its scarey to say the least and v disconcerting. My brain just diesnt know whats hapoening. I've read the centre of gravity is changed after radical mastectomy and that the core is weakened. Can you give me any advice at all in this please and where I go to get help. I really enjoy the cold water therapy and don't want to give it up but I need some help. Many thanks 🙏🙏🙏

Aerobic exercise that gets your heart rate up for 30 mins 3x a week and resistance or body weight training 30 mins 2 x a week / things like lunges, press-ups and squats

I was told by my doctor that after lymphnodes surgery I will be forbidden from doing my job ( farming) and lifting weights havier than 2kg in my right hand for the rest of my life or I will get lymphodema. Could you tell me if it was factually wrong? (Doing press ups puts way more weight on the arm.)

This makes me so cross. You can and should use your arm, lift weights etc. I lift and train heavy. It reduces the risk of lymphoedema

@@DrLizORiordan Thank you for the answer. It gives me some hope I will be able to work. I wish more doctors were as well informed and honest with patients as you are.
