Exfoliation - Dermatologist reviews physical vs chemical methods.
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, thus improving skin texture.
🤔Why exfoliate: Removing dead skin cells can improve the ‘light reflex’ making the skin more vibrant &subtle. #exfoliation also allows better penetration of skin care actives such as #retinol, #niacinamide & #ascorbicacid/ #vitaminC
💡Types of exfoliation: Physical exfoliation is a mechanical method to remove dead skin cells, whist chemical, as the name suggests involves creams, lotions, gels & washes.
Physical exfoliation: Can be performed with a cloth, pads, abrasive washes or devices. #clarisonic is the most well known brand. Physical exfoliation can be combined with chemicals for the ultimate exfoliation.Scrubs contain particles such as apricot seeds, coffee grounds (DIY scrubs), oatmeal, salt & sugar.Microfibre cloths & sponges can also be used to exfoliate skin, the finer & softer the pad the more gentle they are. Don’t use a heel exfoliator on the face!
.
🍊Chemical exfoliation involves a quicker turnover of dead skin cells. This can be achieved via actual removal of dead cells, or a faster turnover of cell. The former is achieved via skin care acids, whist the later is achieved with retinol- retinoids. Skin care acids including #AHAs - #glycolic - #lacticacid & #BHAs including salicylic acid are powerful exfoliators. Lean towards BHAs if you have #acne prone skin or #blackheads. #retinoids can be employed as an exfoliator
.
Caution in: Sensitive skin, #rosacea & dermatitis. Exfoliation is also the quickest way to stuff up your skin if you don’t know what you are doing. If in doubt, consult/insult a skin care professional .
🛒Recommended Products: The #inkeylist has a really nice range of #skinacids as do many other brands. As always, titrate exfoliants into your #skincareroutine
.
🎬Action: @cliniccutis we exfoliate with #chemicalpeels, #hydrafacials, #dermaplaning & lasers. Chemical peels at $89 AUD (AHAs, BHAs, Super Strength Vitamin A/VitA peels)
.
😎Davin’s Protip: Don’t try exfoliation if you have rosacea or sensitive skin- chances are your skin will hate you. For patients with normal skin, exfoliation once to twice a week can form part of your skin care routine. If you understand your skin’s threshold, adding actives can further enhance the effects of exfoliation & vice versa.

I'm really happy to see a dermatologist confirm that physical exfoliation is not the devil. I have very sensitive skin and have had negative reactions to chemical exfoliation.

Exactly why I even came to this video. All these birdbrains feel real cute saying "ugh never use face scrubs they just tear up your skin, you need to step your game up to chemical exfoliants, blah blah blah. That stuff is bad for your skin." Um, No chick, you simply lack grace and scrubbed your face as if you were scrubbing floors 🤭. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Not once ever has my apricot, cornmeal, or even baking soda scrubs caused a breakout or irritate my skin. I have dry skin that's prone to hyperpigmentation so exfoliating is very important for me. And I'm lucky not to have sensitive skin, so I'll stick to what's been working for me for 10+ years with no side effects 😆 VS running after chemicals that will cause my skin to be sensitive to the sun 👀 Um, excuse me, but I'm Caribbean. Sun sensitivity is a complete no-go 🙅🏾‍♀️. Why would I ever bring such an inconvenience onto myself? 😖😅

I exfoliate twice a week. The two times a week I use a chemical exfoliation one day and a physical exfoliation the other day. Basically, I chemically exfoliate once a week and physically exfoliate once a week.

Omg SAME. Chemical exfoliating RUINED my skin. I used it for almost 6 months and my hormonale acne around my month got worse and i got hyperpigmentation. I went back to physical exfoliating and my hormonal acne calmed down and my hyperpigmentation is slowly going away thank god. It was a nightmare😪

Thank you for this Dr.Lim!!! i follow religiously and have a few yrs now.... i wld like to add please.... Apple cider vinegar is an amazing all natural AHA and 1 of the most excellent hands down EXCELLENT exfoliants i use. Like you said, understand your skin, i use only once or twice a week as it is highly potent but nonetheless acv works wonders you can google too, its also what Scarlett Johansson uses. I don't have to dilute mine but some need to.. Its all based on your skin type. Thank you for this vid!!! Just wanted to add that for a holistic alt/ natural option (i use tretinoin as well, i do a combined approach to keep my acne at bay), n this reduces appearance of scarring as well. Thank you again!

I'm finding Tretinoin isn't enough for blackheads (been using for 7 mths). I'm happy to drop it one night a week to use The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. How else can I incorporate another BHA 2% that I could use potentially every day? Would I have to use it in the AM? Or could I use it before the Tretinoin at night? Thanks!

Thank you for the excellent video. I always learn a lot from you. What type of anti aging ingredients would you recommend for people with couperose, rosacea or sensitive skin? I am hesitant about azealaic acid because of some studies stating that it can cause hairgrowth. Niacinamide makes me break out, I have tried it several times to see whether its just purging or not. It unfortunately seemed to just cause me to breakout. Do you have any advice?
@spydula1
@spydula1 4 года назад
Fragrance free products. Mineral-based broad spectrum sunscreen. Weighing out the risk/reward ratio of Azelaic acid, it's significantly less likely to cause hair growth as it would be likely to reduce inflammation and even out texture. Rosacea is a particularly finicky affliction. If possible, seeing a dermatologist directly to have your skin assessed would provide the most effective treatment. Dr Sam Bunting has a number of videos on the subject. - Here's a video on Rosacea by Dr Sam Bunting ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f70o1AMGTGQ.html

@@dtb8008 I really like this Korean brand sunscreen. It's called "[UNSCENTED] PURITO Comfy Water Sun Block". It's SPF 50+ (UVB rating) and PA++++ (UVA rating). It's not greasy at all. My skin tone is a Fitzpatrick 3, and it doesn't make me look pastie. I'm pretty sure it's available internationally (I live in the states). I highly recommend checking out review videos of this product; they do a really good job of conveying texture and result of application. :)

Note - not all facial brushes are the same. The cheaper ones are cheap for a reason. Look for ULTRASONIC technology in a facial brush (they have them with silicone heads as well, not just bristles). Ultrasonic cleansing is a deeper, more effective cleanse. Other brushes just basically spin. Btw-Clarisonic went out of business, but there are others in the market.

I just love my acids. Somehow my skin has acclimated to kojic acid, ascorbic acid, glycolic acid, and a pinch of salicylic acid. Although, I can't use my 20% glycolic acid pads every day now that I'm using an exfoliating wash cloth in the shower. I have been using the washcloth along with a Koji San kojic acid soap with good results, although it is hard to tell from all these actives I've been using. I tried alternating glycolic acid with retinol/Differin, but my skin threw a fit. I tried Differin without all the acids for a couple months, and I was not impressed. I ended up with blotchy skin along with the pimples. Glycolic acid is my favorite acid out of all the acids I've tried. My husband told me I have glowey skin! 😊

Dr Dray is a fantastic dermatologist based in Houston, you really should sub to her channel if you haven't already. Maybe if you contact her via email or something she can recommend a good doctor in your area. Don't give up just yet!

I used to use a gentle super soft spin brush for my face but stopped because youtube aestheticians said it was bad. I switched to chemical exfoliants and it was the worst thing I could’ve done to my sensitive skin. I didn’t get any chemical burns but my skin started to breakout wether it was lactic, glycolic, salicylic acid etc..my skin is wayyyyy to sensitive

That’s because AHA/BHA/PHA ‘s really cause skin purging or breakouts at first. Ideally, once starting out the acids bring out the already stuck dirt from down under which is why it seems that way, but results are so so much more worth it after skin purging

I prefer cleansers with aha or glycolic acids and facial scrubs instead of the face brush
