I’ve been out for over 30 years and still having anxiety just watching this. I was taught throughout my childhood that reading anything written by “the evil slave class,” as apostates were called years ago, would lead to demon possession.

Really great collaboration fellas! There’s something really profound in, as Wally and Falling tower said, being excited to find out you are wrong about something so you can correct it. It explains why christians, and religious people in general get so angry when questioned or challenged and take it so personally. They already feel that they have all the answers, and when that is your starting point, it’s so terrifying to realize that you could be wrong. It’s like you’ve finished the game, but could get booted back to level 1 and lose all of this “progress” you’ve made, start over, and perhaps never reach the finish again. Honestly, it was a huge struggle for me when first mentally free to not be angry at or even afraid of being convinced again by religious people, because after I examined the bible and the watchtower organization on their own terms, I now wanted it to be untrue and was afraid to find out otherwise. So I can understand how my believing family would feel on the other side of that debate, and from this place of understanding and empathy, I’ve become a better communicator with them.

Thank you for this insightful and intelligent panel. These things are so important in helping people immersed in this cult to reclaim their lives.

Hey guys… wonderful, wonderful roundtable. I was only inside the Hall once, but I’ve spent nearly fifty years peering in the window. Though I’ve never been a JW, one of my very best friends is an “ex” and my favorite cousin has been “in the truth” since the 70s (neither has ever felt compelled to limit contact despite the fact that I’ve always been “worldly”). Anyway, thanks for this informative, enriching - and occasionally funny - video, As a former deeply-entrenched Roman Catholic, I have some understanding of how difficult and painful self-extraction can be. My best to you all - with a special shout out to Riley for making this all happen!

@19:55 "no matter how good a person you are if you are not serving Jehovah you are serving the devil" I actually fell for this to become a JW. I was basically told that being devout while being in a church meant nothing because I wasn't doing "pure worship" to Jehovah

Excellent discussion..thanks guys..you are all amazing!! I would have loved to hear more of Wally's quotes..I LOVE Thoreau and his Walden Pond ..we attempted to explore Walden en route to a visit to Maine one summer.. Thoreau might roll over in his grave to see what an attraction it has become..and snooty in a way..we had our dogs and they would not allow us to bring them into the area.. I am always perplexed when they will not allow animals .. on a leash of course..into a natural area .. i find that humans leave much more non biodegradable waste behind than any biodegradable waste a dog might leave behind... however I am equally perplexed at how some dog owners do not pick up after their pets... Any ways we have visited many wild areas that would undoubtedly have appealed to Thoreau and I often reflect on his sentiments when in such an area.. these are the BEST places on earth... I hope all can experience the true beauty of such places.. when one does so it creates beauty inside the soul.. Peace, love and joy to all..

After the Watchtower filed the amicus curiae and the Swaggart case subsequently lost, they informed the BOE that the result of this case lead to the decision to no longer charge for the literature. The letter was shared by the BOE to the congregation.

I think the whole "the world is such a terrible place today" thinking is also bolstered by a natural human tendency: as we get older, we think the "old days" were better in many respects, and we don't like the new-fangled stuff, and we think "what's the world come to" all the time. I'm sure anyone over 40 knows the feeling. That totally feeds into the JW narrative of the last days.

I’m so sorry for what you all and everyone in this cult have been through. In my experience with ministering to the JWs that knock on my door it was always through the Watchtower magazine they would have me the week prior that I would bring the research the following week addressing all the footnotes and citing sources. The mental gymnastics tactics that were used on me didn’t work because of knowing the source material first hand. It’s the greatest tragedy that believers don’t put as much effort into knowing truth for themselves as cults put into twisting the truth and forcing their members to memorize it. I’m not a “pastor follower”. Everything I know I walked through with the LORD and the resources available for in depth study. Nothing too impressive here, just tenacity and perseverance to find truth no matter what. What grieves me even greater is that in the process of escape the results become a complete denial of the LORD Almighty. I understand how and why, but it’s like what the Seattle guy said about making mashed potatoes out of carrots...there may no longer be anymore carrots, but cauliflower doesn’t work either... even though it may appear to. (White, fluffy,...but the taste is NOT a potato). Being in a cult is synonymous to narcissistic/psychopathic/sociopathic/sadistic abuse. Gaslighting with Machiavellian fear tactics in order to gain full power and control. Cults heads do this to remain hidden by pulling the strings of its lower level leaders (also victims) who keep control through true conviction that what they were taught and are believing is true. Mormons are the same...so is SRA... One point I need to make is that the slightest twist on the context of truth makes a statement false, yet the statement itself, on its own, can still be true in its proper context. The enemy is crafty and has perfected the art of the counterfeit. There truly are only two options in whom we choose to serve...but the issue with the context of how JWs use it is that when they refer to Jehovah they actually mean the organization itself, not the Maker of Heaven and Earth nor the One Whom All things, seen and unseen, were made, Who was and Is and Is to come. Im sure it’s beyond frightening to consider, but if I may be so bold as to continue with one more point: the greatest lies have the greatest ratios of truth with twists and turns to subtly defile the truth in order to cause self doubt and thus cognitive dissonance and mind control ensues. A good example is the kids movie “Smallfoot”. Questions were taught to be pushed down because “the stones are never wrong...don’t question the stones”. On one hand this is what cults and abusers do. On the other hand the result is equally as dangerous when the “awoken” conclusion leads people to merely throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater and deny everything in one lump...that too is black and white thinking. It’s immensely difficult to sift through, I don’t deny that. Recover from the bright light that shines exposing the darkness, but don’t remain blind. Once our eyes are able to adjust is when it’s time to seek truth for the sake of truth. My prayer for all survivors is the pursuit of truth for the purpose of truth alone, not merely a means to escape the prison of tyranny and hypocrisy...no matter where it leads, and that this pursuit remains insatiable. None of us will ever arrive completely in this life. Yet, the core foundation of Truth is attainable and knowable...and contrary to this counterculture there is an absolute truth. It’s not relative. My prayers remain for you all on this Exodus journey. My heart goes out to each and every one of you, on the panel and beyond, who have endured abuse. I am truly grateful you have been able to escape the clutches of this organization, but I am so sorry this is the only means in which the LORD was introduced and represented to you. It’s not who He is....not by any stretch of the imagination. They’ve been feeding you sour grapefruit and calling it a sweet orange. It’s a lie from the depths of the pit. Yet, the sweet orange does exist and I pray you find Him. May the LORD of Hosts bless you and keep you, may He shine His countenance upon you and bring you peace (shalom). PS. Just know I’m not feeding a platitude or trite “believe and all will be well” slogan. Standing in the truth in this life is the hardest thing to do...how’s that for a “sales pitch”. Yet, if we don’t have truth, what else is there? What’s the point? All is rendered meaningless and void if there isn’t an absolute truth that leads to purpose and ultimately the One who designed that purpose eternally. Sorry for the length...it all just poured out. You mean a class case/suit I assume. Where a group of individuals files one lawsuit instead of each one his own and in the end that settles it (that's how I understand it, I have nearly no clue of jurisdiction)

1:49:52 Actually, that's not perfectly logical reasoning. That's a fallacy. I don't know the exact name but that's a fallacy of the form: A is a cause of X, therefore X is always the result of A. But A can just be one of multiple possible causes of X. For example, the punishment for stealing is imprisonment, but that doesn't mean all prisoners are thieves. There are other reasons for imprisonment.
