Following the eventual melting of snow from the 'Beast From The East', Abbie heads over to Exmoor to explore one of their favourite routes along the East Lyn River.
Their walk begins in the small village of Brendon and then follows the river on a tranquil trail to Watersmeet House. A few more miles of undulating path and wooden bridges and Abbie arrives in the seaside town of Lynmouth. The adjoining town, Lynton, has a fascinating history - Abbie visits the flood memorial hall, explores the Cliff Valley Railway, and makes a compulsory cream tea stop.
Finally headed back, Abbie ventures onto the other side of the river,. spotting wildlife along the way back to the car and the end of the walk.

I’m a fairly new subscriber which is lucky because it means that I can watch two or three of your videos every day and they’re helping me to feel connected to the world outside. Hi Abbie, I did this walk with my daughter whilst house-swapping in Northam. It was a great walk. We, however, had our cream tea at Watersmeet - yummy indeed. Thanks for the video so I could be reminded of the wonderful time we had in the area. The Valley of the Rocks was also awesome at sunset. The goats were also great. I love the U.K.

It is, indeed, a fantastic walk on all levels (no pun intended) and that was a fantastic video. Don't blame you at all for having a cream tea. As you say, it just has to be done! Seeing that heron gliding down the valley clearly made your day. Thanks for sharing.

I agree Abbie. That sense of place is important to me to. We take it in - absorb it all and it simply invokes some rather wonderful visions. This is certainly the place to see all the good within. Wow - I was very surprised at how impressive the river valley was and is. And that cream tea matched it. What do they say? 'When down and lonely observe a Heron taking flight.' Fabulous outing. All the very best. Mark

A Gentle Warning: I did the walk to Lynmouth and back on Saturday 30 Oct. However, it was not the doddle I thought it was going to be after watching Abbie's excellent video. I started late from Brendon, spent too much time in Lynmouth, and had to finish the walk by the light of my headtorch. Furthermore, I didn't have a map (I've since ordered one) and I had left my walking poles at home thinking them more of a burden than a help for such an easy walk. As it turned out, it would have been nice to have had both. The path on the right hand bank as you go down to Lynmouth is well maintained, but is by no means flat, with lots of up-and-down and rocky and muddy sections. If you have children, keep an eye on them, as there are some places where they could fall in the river or fall down a steep embankment. The path on the other side of the bank is not so well maintained and is, frankly, somewhat chaotic. My suggestion is that unlike me, you don't treat the outing as totally trivial. (And also be warned: Lynmouth prices for food and beer are seriously on the high side.) For all the above, this was probably the most beautiful walk I have ever done in my life -- and I lived in Switzerland for 10 years! Thanks Abbie!

Lynmouth and Lynton are amazing places, good walking area, walked to Watersmeet many times, also there’s a pathetic up to Countisbury, personally I have to recommend the food and beer in the Rising Sun in Lynmouth and the beer in the Blue Ball Inn at Countisbury, my ex wife and I used to go there at least four time a year, if your looking for a B&B Ingleside in Lynton is extremely recommended, Diana & Keith run a brilliant establishment, superb breakfast and evening meals, I just love and miss going to the area, if I walk up the mountain opposite wher I live, I can see the area on a good day, takes four hours to drive there though.

Loved the video and did the walk last Tuesday. The scenery was magnificent and the noise of the river was very calming as we walked along. We didn't see anyone else until we arrived at the Riversmeet café and even then it was fairly quiet. The cream tea in the pub was a bit disappointing but maybe chose a day when the chef was off :-) Overall we had a fabulous day and will be returning to do this walk again in the Autumn. Thanks for the video Abbie.

@AbbieBarnesWILD
@AbbieBarnesWILD 6 лет назад
Hillbilly Sikh Great question! A cream tea is a scone (or two - a kind of cake thingy that you chop in half) and cover in jam and cream. The debate across the country is whether to put jam or cream first! Different counties do it differently you see. And then with the scones come English tea in a pot :) it's a great treat!!
@hillbillysikh1513
@hillbillysikh1513 6 лет назад
Abbie Barnes | Song Thrush Productions Let me see if I have this? Cream tea is the act of having tea and a scone w/ cream & jam. So having a cream tea is an event not a type of tea? I think I’ve got it.

Abbie- instead of turning left out of the car park, could we turn right towards the Rockford Inn, and then cross the river on the small footbridge to join the trail that you took? It would save a bit of walking for those of us not so young.

I expect that Abbie is leading a walk in Outer Mongolia, and has no Internet. LOL So I went down to Brendon yesterday, and can confirm that it saves quite a bit of walking if you go toward the Rockford inn from the car park at Brendon, and go over the footbridge to join the trail to Watersmeet. It IS a fantastic walk, and I enjoyed it immensely although I am paying for it today.

Her walks are clear proof of why England is much more civilized and comfortable.... Europe in general, was civilized by walking path, and not by major roads, so much more walking paths, USA is totally non existent to civilized European standards (has no walking paths going from a town to b town)
