By far the funniest thing about Lysandre's Trump Card is that almost immediately after it was banned, Enrique Avila placed second at US Nationals with a 0-energy stall/mill deck that sat on Wailord-EX for 20 turns and waited for their opponent to deck out
@@fluffyspark798 dunno if there's footage but there are a lot of breakdowns of it. It was a rather amusing concept in that the deck basically just focuses on keeping your wailord alive and nothing else. I think it included stuff like the hammer cards to remove energy; helmets to reduce damage by 20, full/max restores and the supporter equivalents, etc. It was VERY annoying to play against because pretty much ONLY a deck that had wailord's type weakness or could block all forms of support could beat it. As an example, even the night march decks need 2 turns minimum to take out wailord...woops, item card returned it to the hand, back on the bench you go!
"They would attempt to identify and ban cards that had the potential to make a major negative impact on an opponent before they get a chance to take their first turn" Boy how things have changed
Boost Shake into Galarian Weezing with Neutralising Gas is a nasty turn one combo that negates all of your opponent's Pokémon's Abilities while they're in play
@@SMitchellG115 Garbodor DRX Kleflki SS is more worrying than Galarian Weezing. In addition, Trevenant, a card that was a huge part in Wally being banned is using boost shake for turn 1 going 1st item lock
Not really. There is no deck that sees competitive play and success that keeps you from playing the game if you go first. None. The worst thing you may see is Empoleon V or Miltank, and those don't even stop you from playing. Just hinder you.
What's cool is Pokémon bans the problem cards first instead of the supporting ones. Like how Konami waited so long to FINALLY just ban Halq instead of banning like 5 different tuners which is what made it so good.
I don't play the game so maybe I don't know, but I like how at least in this video they see a problem coming a mile away and try to make bans that don't completely screw over the new powerful card, but aren't afraid to pull the trigger when it's gonna get out of hand.
Looking at the reply, I think that's the main problem that many ygo players have with how konami handles bans. crystron halquifibrax is an incredibly powerful card, but it benefits from being able to play so many strong tuner monsters to summon it. konami kept bonking the tuners while allowing halq to stay around because it was a new, powerful card they wanted to let people play.
Haha that's funny because Pokemon doesn't ban cards. You're really underestimating how long these cards were legal for until they got banned, only in Expanded. Don't worry bro, it will rotate out :)
actually, Pokemon tends to have a history of banning the wrong cards. For example, Wally was banned due to cards that allow item or ability locks turn 1 ...but those cards weren't banned, allowing them to be instantly played on a player's second turn with other means. Removing wally crippled a ton of decks including one of my favorites at the time that was just a for-fun deck that used dragonite that gained an extra prize card upon KO ; meanwhile, the problem cards remained and could just as easily screw you over turn 3, turning the game into a coin flip of whoever got their combo onto the field first based upon turn order...
MtG also makes some cool vids and articles about it. It is surprising that Konami was able to get away with this, though it is understandable that a good part of it is to keep ot fresh (aka out with the old and in with the new). Farfa slightly tackled this in his vod about the Ban List history. There is a complex topic to be further discussed.
It'd be hilarious, but it'll never happen. "Yeah uh that Crystron Halqawhatever card you guys are using is causing a lot of people to stop playing so uh...we banned all the tuners. Thank your for playing Yu-Gi-Oh!.
I feel like the video missed an important part of decks with Maxie or Archie. Exeggcute with the ability Propogation for hand-fixing. The ability allows you to return Exeggcute from your discard pile to your hand, and due to how private/public information works in Pokemon, you can use this ability multiple times on the same turn with the same card. This was an important hand-fixing card to get down to exactly Maxie/Archie in hand because some hands can be almost impossible to play down to a single card, but with Propogation you can do things like have a Maxie and an Ultra Ball in hand, Propogation two Exeggcute from discard and use them as the cost for the Ultra Ball to remain with just the 1 card in hand, whereas without that ability you'd be stuck with no way to get rid of the Ultra Ball and couldn't use the Supporter that turn.
6:05 to anyone who got here from the sister-channels and is wondering, if a player is ever unable to place a pokemon in the active slot, they lose the game on the spot. Since placing a pokemon on the bench (to be able to take the active slot if needed) is an "on your turn" action, it doesn't matter if they're currently holding any reserves (which they probably wouldn't be since a full bench is useful and Shiftree sends victims to the deck), if the last active pokemon leaves play they're hosed. This usually only happens if you brick hardcore and most tournament decks are tuned to the point where it's impossible without significant disruption (which is half the reason disruption effects are so rare and tend to be ban-magnets), but Shiftree exploited this rule and the game's general lack of out-of-turn interaction (put simply, Pokemon does not have counterspells or hand-traps).
I distinctly remember the Lysandre's Trump Card ban being a bit controversial at the time, after all it had been nearly 13 years (the previous ban was Neo Genesis Slowking in 2002, Sneasel was banned over a year earlier btw) since a card was banned from standard, but looking back LTC might genuinely be the worst designed card ever made.
IK Slowking was only busted because WoTC just screwed up translation to the point of making it busted by accident (the JP card was actually more balanced)
I just found your channel and I've been enjoying your videos. It's taken me down memory lane of my competitive time throughout me playing competitive TCG. I get war like flashbacks every time i hear the phrase "quaking punch" keep up the good work I look forward to watching more of your videos and see what you upload in the future
I played Lysandre's Trump card in a fire deck based deck and me recycling my energy and resources made games very long and I agreed with my bro to not play that card
@@dmitrisemenoff6455 they mispronounce a LOT of names over the videos, quite a few of which are well-known pronunciations due to other methods such as Genesect's movie

So what I'm seeing here is you could theoretically use one vileplume (or omastar) to shut down item cards, another vileplume to shut down basic pokemon attacks, and then archeops to stop all evolution and prevent your opponent from playing the game. I like it
I’m foreign to the Pokémon TCG, but from the little I know about Magic and Hearthstone I can make sense of what you’re talking about and it’s really interesting. Keep it up!
LST is interesting in that it was banned immediately after arguably winning world's single handedly. The winning deck that year was able to draw the entire deck in one turn, then LST on the next turn to avoid deckout. This basically allowed the winning deck to play with a ~50 card hand.
I had this steelix card that let you do 50 damage times the number of heads you roll consecutively. Stops on tails. I remember thinking it was sooo op. Then i see some of these. Geez
If this series does well, I hope you could cover any banned cards which were around in the pre-Expanded Format sets. Or maybe they'll get covered in those "Top 10 Cards from x Gen" videos I see you've already made one of.
It wasn't the most powerful or consistent deck, but I had a lot of fun using Forest of Giant Plants with Evolutions Beedrill to fill my board with bees that could do up to 160 damage each turn
man, i played a lurantis, decidueye gx deck when forest was still legal, it felt disgusting being able to output 80 damage in the form of 2 damage counters a pop before your opponent could do anything on turn 1
Dude you have a Pokemon channel too? That's amazing I love the Pokemon tcg :) If you haven't already, would love to see you do a video covering the fan made Gym Leader Challenge format :3
Forest of Giant Plants is wild for how much havoc is caused in Expanded, what a mess of a card. It's a lot funnier to me as I played in the tail end of the 4th era with Broken Time Space, but of course with that card never reaching Expanded, its never been in a format where it's been broken. Just funny how FoGP feels more broken to me despite being a weaker BTS. Guess its because BTS was only ever legal in a controlled format.
I think the fact FoGP is limited to Grass-types makes it better than BTS though, since it means your opponent is unlikely to be able to take advantage of the Stadium effect.
The Shiftry+ Forest of Giant Plants combo was what made me quit playing the Pokemon Online TCG. It got to the point where 2 out of 3 opponents were playing that garbage FTK.
Seismitoad EX was such an oppressive card. Virizion EX and Genesect EX, the "Horse and Buggy," were a godsend. Fastest I had ever bought singles to make a deck.
I remember playing an Item-lock based deck with the Vileplume and a Noctowl who raised the damage of its attack by the amount of Item cards in the enemy's hand, was pretty nasty
I think a really cool video to make would to show how much cards pokemon players draw. Yu-Gi-Oh and MTG players would slay all the angels and demon in the multiverse to draw 3 and I stg I have the hardest time explaining to new players that discard your hand and draw 7 is unequivocally the best card draw in the game.
I played in Madison regionals just before it got banned, and played Seismitoad Slurpuff at the Madison open the day after I failed day 1. (Slurpuff has the tasting ability, where every turn you can draw 1 and if Dlurpuss is the active Pokémon, draw 2 instead.) That thing was everywhere in the tournament for good reason. Ruined decks.
here's a card I want to know about. Lt. Surge's Strategy. It came out in a set towards the very end of the sumo block. unbroken bonds. I remember there being tons of cards based on mostly kanto figures, specifically using let's go art since I think those games were not to long ago. "during this turn, you can play 3 supporter cards". ok, so you play surge first, and you can play 2 supporters. I was only watching some poketcg channel, but I'm pretty sure I saw a few videos about the card. so many supporters out at the time for draw, hand ripping, other crazy supporter effects. I never stuck around long enough to see if the card ended up being as powerful as it seems it should be.
yes LST was banned after because of a degenerate combo allowing you to win easily on turn 1-2. Control decks are insanely OP in Pokemon, and the player base in general dislikes them because of DONKs (FTKs if you come from a Yu-Gi-Oh background)
I'm sorry to break it down but Lurantis-GX is a pretty bad card lmfao. It's not a good example of a pokémon that would abuse Forest of Giant plants, i think it would acutally be pretty balanced. A better example was the golisopod-GX which can do 120 damage for a single grass energy. Much more practical. I wouldn't even have mentioned lurantis lol.
@@ratsausage2543 I would only play the card for its GX attack, and even then its kinda underwhelming. It wouldve only been playable in a venusaur-genesect deck, a deck that was never really that good. The 120 heal 30 is rlly bad for 3 energies tho. I stand by what I said bad card.
They changed the rule and unbanned wally, stating they would make an effort to not make cards that could prevent your opponent from having a vital first turn, and then not even 6 months later printed Boost Shake, making the Rules change completely useless. Granted we have not been able to truly see the impact of a Boost Shake Trev deck in Expanded due to the lack of Large Scale expanded tournaments, but you see my point.
something is missing about this video.. oh yeah 2 questions. can this card would be unbanned? how could be change to make it unbanned (but still playable)
i'm still angry and upset, that the pokemon company banned Puzzle piece. i love the card and its gimick, of needing 2 copies of the same card, to gain its more powerful effect when played. being able to just grab and 2 cards from the discard pile was great, and i remember using it a tun, back when i was playing the game. but of course some people thought of silly "looping" strategies with Oranguru, so it was banned.
I made a vespiequen and ray ex deck with forest and when i found out it was banned i was very upset cause it was one of my first decks i made when i came back to the tcg
as someone who is familiar with the rules of pokemon, i gotta wonder how some of these cards ever got printed. isn't preventing your opponent's pokemon from attacking absurdly powerful?
While I love Expanded, I would advise directed content to it to be prioritized after. I have no clue how the algorithm exactly works, but unfortunately Pkmn hasn't been supporting it to popularity ;-;
While the Expanded format itself may not be as active right now, looking back at why its cards were banned is an excellent gateway into the history of the game at a time when playing retro formats is becoming increasingly popular. Pokémon also likes to print cards with similar effects to ones that have come before, so learning how effects were utilized in the past can inform deck-building in the present!
@@jakegearhart Jake is here :D I do get those points, and the topics are always treated with the best effort by TDL, I was only referring to how maybe first tackling Standard could bring more eyes to this. I mainly play MtG and I would like to see this (another) channel of TDL burst like TheManaLogs did :)
> 4 minutes of talking about why Forest of Giant Plants was stupidly powerful me, who played back when Broken Time-Space was a thing: whiners (for reference, it was basically Forest of Giant Plants but not type-limited)
Fossils historically were given broken abilities because they were harder than average to put into play. The real problem cards have always been the ones that circumvent the Fossil mechanics. All other circumstances, Fossils never see play because they're bricky, slow and inconsistent Vs. plain Stage 1 decks.
As of upload the next set has a Lugia V Star that can cheat out the new colorless Acheops the same way Maxie could, which then can accelerate Special Energy. In Expanded you even have Wally again, who works on Pokemon V because Wally explicitly excludes EX Pokemon, so this can pop off Turn 1 going second.
You still can't play Wally turn 1 because you can't play supporters turn 1 so you can only use the VSTAR power turn 2. And the new Archeops doesn't disable basic gameplay for the opponent.
@@flagrama Turn 1 going second can play Wally to evolve Lugia into the VStar, drop Archeops with the VStar Ability, Archeops drops 2 special energy on Lugia, you drop the third as your attachment and swing for 220 plus destroying stadiums on Turn 1 going second. Banning Supporters Turn 1 going first made going second completely over powered, and honestly neither player should be able to attack on their first turn to even things out. EDIT: should also mention that 220 will KO any Pokemon V, netting 2 prizes since going first means you haven’t gone VMax/VStar yet.
@@piratebear3126 being able to set up going second is fair in my opinion. I don't play Expanded at all, so maybe it really is massively different and could be a problem though. Doesn't seem like TPCi think it's going to be a problem at least since there aren't any Expanded bans for Silver Tempest.
@@flagrama I don’t think it’ll see much in tournaments due to consistency issues. You’re burning your once per game VStar ability turn 1 and you have to dump Archeops into the discard (granted that’s not too hard with Ultra/Quick Ball and Battle Compressor). It’ll make a great aggro ladder deck online though, since it wins or loses quickly, and it’s a wild combo to have a wincon turn 1. Pokemon desperately needs another format or two considering how high Expanded’s power level is getting, but TPCi seems to not care about anything but Standard recently.
@@piratebear3126 the need the equivalent to MTG's Modern or Legacy formats or even something lower power along the lines of pauper (I know pauper is very powerful, it's more so about there being less flashy things to do).

Funny thing is I did look up how to pronounce it and all of the top results are gene-sect. One of them is even a pronunciation guide with a pokemon in the bg of it, but turns out they're all wrong lol. I'll make a note that its JEH NEH SECT for future videos
@@thedexlogsdexlogs To be fair to you, the community doesn't always pronounce things the "official" way cause some of them sound very weird (best example being the intro to this video : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3HZO1ZW6XX4.html)
If I'm remembering right battle compressor was also banned recently, mostly cause of it breaking V-union cards. If it was still legal it could also get 3 lost origin gengar into play basically. Honestly surprised it took this long for battle compressor to be hit
"Oh cool, a new pokemon TCG channel, this should be GOD DAMN ITS YOU AGAIN" You have like six channels at this point, man. Holy shit. Also, it's Gen-E-Sect, not Gene-Sect. Sorry, it's my favorite legendary, I'm kinda anal about these things.
