You are AMAZING!!!! I just found your videos and this has been literally the best lecture I’ve seen on this topic. One question though. Would the electron configuration be sp3d2 for the expanded octets?
@OldSchoolChemistry
@OldSchoolChemistry 8 месяцев назад
Hi Theegress, 5 electron domains are sp3d and 6 electron domains are sp3d2. Both 5 and 6 electron domains are expanded octets. I have videos in the bond playlist on VSEPR if you need more support. Thanks!! :)

I don't know if you have addressed this, but that is not the preferred structure for XeO4 if you look at formal charges. Xe does expand in XeO4
@OldSchoolChemistry
@OldSchoolChemistry 2 месяца назад
For stability it favors the octet rule. Thank you. www.google.com/search?q=in+nature+does+xeo4+have+an+expanded+octet&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS1071US1071&oq=in+nature+does+xeo4+have+an+expanded+octet&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCTExNTgyajBqN6gCALACAA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

XeO4 is actually expanded octet for Xe. Double bonds to O.
@OldSchoolChemistry
@OldSchoolChemistry Год назад
Hi TTT, this is a common mistake. It does not expand. Xenon does a coordinate covalent bond with each oxygen to maintain the octet, which is much more stable than expanding. Additionally, atoms cannot expand past 12 electrons, and double bonds to 4 oxygens would expand to an impossible 16 electrons. I hope that helps! Thanks.
