That was an awesome interview Dan. Tim is quite a caracter and he looks much younger than his age. I'm Canadian, 59 and moved to Mexico and although my expenses are nowhere as low as Tim's, I was able to find a beautiful fully furnished brand new condo overlooking a lake and located in the most upscale area in Yucatan (which is known to be the safest state in Mexico) for just $659 per month and it includes EVERYTHING : electricity, water, gas, internet, solar panels and access to all the amenities of this beautiful gated community. Huge pool, pet friendly park, tennis, club house, water sports, you name it! It took me 2 months to find this gem and I'm so happy. I get all my groceries delivered at my door: Got the best fish, poultry, beef, vegetables and fruits , I eat like a King for approx $280/month. I walk with my dog regularly, I find no need to buy a car since Uber cost me only $4 to get practically anywhere and I rarely take it (about 3 to 4 times a month only !!!) I could never have that kind of lifestyle in Canada!!

🎉 Thank you Dan For continuing to do these great interviews with foreigners living and retiring in other countries successfully. I am a single solo female foreigner residing in Mexico for almost 2 years now. Tim is a true inspiration for me as it is my dream to have my own little place a couple of roosters and chickens and growing my own food. A life of abundance on many levels.

Hi @destinationmax, Tim is an insperation and there are many others living the dream here in Mexico. I happen to live in Queretaro, Mexico. Dan interviewed and posted my interview about a month ago. Titled: Retired on $658 a month. I teach English for a living online, but whether you grow your own food or whether you go to the local markets for your food you can live on a lot less here in Mexico, if you get your feet on the ground and look for yourself. DON'T go by the so called Expert Gringo Expats they pay through the nose for things instead of looking for the real life Mexican experience. Have a great time here in Mexico!!!

So how is the last few months treating you? This winter is so mild: My tomatoes and peppers still have flowers!! Still getting a crop everyday. I expanded my chicken runs and do agree it is time for rooster just as experiment. I'm planting big amounts of spearmint all over the property and in containers- All from a cutting I bought last April. These seem to discourage the gopher which are a problem without cats on the property (Cats also a threat to my chicken) In the middle, I'm getting a pond ready for the next big rain. My water collection is about full atm- So looking to create pond. Again, just as experiment. I usually don't start tomatoes from seeds until Feb: but this year? Getting them in the queue now. Best wishes! You can do it.

Hello Dan, This is Aaron from Queretaro, Mexico. I thought I had gotten a good deal at 658 a month in Queretaro, Tim just blew me out of the water. His story and my story show that you can still live cheaply here in Mexico, you just have to get your feet on the ground and find these types of deals. You don't find deals like Tim or I did, if you ask regular expats, because they don't know the real Mexican economy, they still are doing the Gringo deal even in Mexico. Again Dan Thanks for my interview and to Tim for coming out with his story.. Keep up the GREAT WORK!!!

@lailaatallah1857 Hey!!! Thanks for the kind words!! I pay Maintenance as I go. For example, I installed a front door and front gate to my driveway. This week I will put in an enclosed chicken run (plan is about 300 square feet dedicated. I want to see if the chicken will raise babies) After the hurricane, I got a pond ready - I salvaged the liner and dig myself. I did replace, completely replace the roof on the main house, two years ago. And I had a certified electrician for electric repairs. Also, I started teaching English at our woman's shelter. An extreme honor, as they had alot of people wanting the opportunity: I use the "Natural Acquistion Method" so I welcome children, teens and adult women to class. There are some costs I pay of that, but again- I just pay as I go. Just like everyone else, in age 60, you are at the highest income of our lives: Me too. So a great time for life. Best wishes to you!! PS: Are you a sister wolf?

yet, your question deserves consideration: Could you tell me about these "quotes"? Quotes from who? Quotes where the technology of solar and water is not common? Yes, you are right about "useful today": You don't appear to "be a wolf or to understand what is "wolf". Perhaps you mean "expat" and "expensive" and do the American way while guest in another country? If you wish to come to Mexico (and treat me consistantly respectfully) I will show you how you "MAY" do the same on $15,000, today. Do you see this? This is internet. Anyone can do this, IF they put in the work: There will be no "quotes" involved!!! BTW: Everything else, is the same for today: All the utility prices. All the supplies for chicken and food. Did you watch the video? I mention a place in town renting for $60 month where my friend lives: There is an elegant apartment for $225 all utilities included. Happy to share more if you wish.

Really TRUE!!! As I mentioned, I really was considering a place, much closer to the orphanage, for 26K: It was bigger house in a fine location at the very tip of a developed area- walkable or bike. Another American woman had an elegant two story, with stunning brick exterior, asking 30K, about 6 blocks into the development- both were built to their lots- not much room. So the place I found was at the end of the development in the other direction- 2/3 of the land NOT developed giving me room to breathe. IF I wanted to lower cost it? I saw a place for $7K, but the house was turned "funny". Yet this was not an 'ace"- it is a good strong Queen, but there were two opportunities that I saw later of far better!! Not for regrets- but better. IMHO- I only bought what I could live on, to protect with my physical presence. Best wishes!!!

Question if medical in Mexico is so cheap why did he say that he goes to USA for dental, spending over $1000. per year, other youtubers claim dirt cheap state of art dental services in mexico.
@timisaac8121
@timisaac8121 Год назад
Hey, how you doing? I have trust issues particularly with dentists. I need specialized dental services and have the same dentist since 1998. Also, my dentist donated his service for much of the time as his way to help with the orphanage. At that time, in 98, few dentists worked with mercury poisioning: I had to remove all my filings, from the military, and replace them with a relatively new product. That is my experience. However, my daughter, now 17, uses local service of "braces doctor" (what is that called?) Very good job and I am pretty happy with the result: It was about $200 to start and $20 per month for the past 18 months. The result is comparable to kids I know living in USA. Hope that is helpful.

Pardon me for not reply sooner: In the "tourist area", visas are not needed. Within Baja North, very little is done in the way of requirements or enforcement. In the whole Mexico, about 1M USA people reside. About 90% of those have no paperwork at all. When I went to court, the court required me to get a 180 FMT: it is issued on request at about $25. It depends so much on your needs: There are USA people who drive without Mexico insurance, which is a felony if you have an accident, yet they do it. Those people? Well, usually, when something does go bad? They complain and blame someone else: Usually Mexico. Hope this is some help.

There needs to be another alternative for lower income retirees who want to become expats. Specifically, I mean the standard warning that you should never move to a country without visiting first. I definitely understand the wisdom of this advice, having failed to follow it it myself. But the fact is, if you're looking for a country where you can live on $1,500 per month and that's all you have, paying for those extra plane tickets to visit becomes problematic. Now I do have a credit card and I do know how to buy plane tickets cheaply. But I am not in a position to visit a half dozen different countries before I decide which one I’ll settle in. Maintaining my home base while I'm gone is daunting enough. Is this an insurmountable barrier? Is there no way to be prepared for the culture shock without experiencing it? Probably not. But do you think there is a way that a low-income expat wannabe can successfully negotiate a transition without a ton of extra expense? How might you approach it?
@timisaac8121
@timisaac8121 Год назад
It looks like we are pondering the answer to this very sobering and important question. It is hard to answer bc of what we have seen: the nice people who don't make it, the ones who go back to their home. The problems, legit actual real problems, that come up. Everyone is so very different. AND- some people don't realize they are "*/&3~~". For example, I have offered to help people, yet their situation is FAR from what they represent. Some people are so suspicious, they think I try to trick them. I warned a woman she was dealing with con-men: She lost $10,000 (but didn't seem too bend out of shape about it). Only you know if you want a private personal car? Use FaceBook on your phone? Want a housekeeper? Are bothered by noise that is different everywhere? It happens I went the volunteer route and worked (8 hours a day) for room and board to live locally. BTW: to me? 1500? a month? is a fortune. Go local!!

Wow 65 where?!?! He brought his electric bill but Imma need to see a birth certificate 😂. Lemme go ahead and start this life. I’m 44 and just started traveling full time with my kids but my ultimate goal is to find a place to retire along my travels. We are currently in Mexico and love it. My mother retired in Baja California. I’m gonna see what the cost of real estate is and have a little compound for my family and retirement years so I can look that good at 64! 🎉

hope it is working for you!!! If you wish to purchase AND reside continuously on the land you MAY consider ejido land: in Baja north, that is south of San Quintin. If you can live with morning fog on the coast? El Rosario would be my choice. If you are willing to go far south? Bahia de Los Angeles (where it gets so hot in the summer, people sleep outside for a couple months) I'm not good at city life: If you are, Tecate could be so great. It is alpine village and you may never leave!! I only found the down town "local" area bc of a detour. It is so charming. On the mainland, I would go to Jalisco and never look back! Best wishes!!

just saw your post today: Pardon my delay: Bus/Taxi is in-expensive and most anyone can use it to get to work and back home. In cities, like Ensenada Tijuana and Mexicali, it is extensive, though often requires more than one link, just like in NY or Chicago. If you haven't used public transport before, it can be really truly "over whelming". Best wishes! PS: in Mexico, I find it cheaper bc everything I do is seen as "oh, okay. That is good idea, I've heard of that". In cultures further away, my actions are seen as "weird or bizarre or the like" just culturally. Again: from Dan: "how you live"...

I'm a permanent resident of Mexico and people must know that medical story as told is very particular, not the norm. There is no healthcare in Mexico like in Canada except for basic care provided by INSABI, very basic. Otherwise most expats take heath Insurance that can be costly with deductible and coinsurance. I live in Puerto Vallarta and it's getting as expensive then in Canada: rents at $2000 dollars are not uncommon. Food is getting expensive. Restaurants have almost doubled in price over the last 2-3 years. With the valuation of the pesos getting higher every week, Mexico is getting expensive.
@timisaac8121
@timisaac8121 Год назад
@lb9007 May I reply and take much care not to offend you? yes, you are somewhat correct. During the covid, people with ISSSE (sp?) insurance got priority of the available oxygen tanks. And you had to go and get it. And while you picked up the tanks, other people, with Popular Insurance, looked at (in this case: me) with mixed emotions. How could the gringo, with long hair and badly dressed, be priority for healthcare while other people are dying from the oxygen that he is picking up? @Dan: Maybe I am offensive, so I will stop here and see if he/she replies. I dont argue with his experience living in PV, apparently in an ex pat community, where the people have private insurance.

No one ever mentions the cost of real retirement over seas. The cost to return to your country of origin every 6 months to every year or so to keep your documents up to date.. visa etc... I am going to guess that it is going to be at least 1 grand or more for every 6 months to a year or so.. that means you better have the money put away to do so..Also if you do not have family or friends that check your mail allow you to stay or allow you to use their address... So if you do not have a place to stay you'll need to handle that as well on your return trips back to your home country.. I would put most around 3K per year extra to be able to handle the legal issues travel and stays in order to keep your visas and documents in line.. to stay out of trouble.
