The smaller tiles are what you use when the larger tiles don't work. It takes longer to get where you need to go, but that is what they are there for. I agree the game can be brutal if you are not paying attention, but figuring out if you should lay a tile or wait for your opponent to do it or just try and make a run for the NW passage was very fun for us.
I totally agree. The theme and concept are awesome but the game is just really not that fun at all. It's way too thinky and you're never sure that somebody won't mess up everything you just planned out to do. It's unfortunate because the game looks so cool.
