Alex, I used to be an auto mechanic for GMC. I am very familiar with the MDI 2 interface module and I'm even more familiar with the people that use that hardware... a lot of them aren't exactly " firing on all cylinders " 🤣

What type of tweezer type soldering iron do you use? It looks small and nice. I was searching for that on your website, but didn't find it. Any link to purchase it? Please.

The flux used on that job is rosin. The residue is not a problem since it is a good isolator, but of course it would have been better to not have a ton of residue.

I was not aware of that. I always thought "no clean flux" was not corrosive.

Well, there is a reason paths were laid out the way they were, that is a differential pair. Not a big deal, but one could have gone into the effort of making it the same length and keeping it as close to each other as possible. This will certainly do the job but, definitely not better than factory.

Awesome repair. Interesting what you run into, some elevator accessory boards are hand soldered, and they just leave the flux on. Doesn't look very nice, also makes it difficult to see the bad solder joints.

that is not flux residue, is kolophonium or colophony and is a soldering resin. When i was a little boy, in Romania it was the only flux available on the market

USB data lines (D+ and D-) should be of the same length in total on a PCB, especially for high-speed USB (such as USB 2.0 and above). This practice is critical to maintaining signal integrity and ensuring the proper operation of the USB interface (Signal Integrity, Impedance Matching, Crosstalk and EMI etc.). Maybe it's a bit theoretical and doesn't make a big difference in practice, but I wish this had been taken care of in this repair.

It won't matter. The idea is to have a specific resistance. And at those distances, from the connector to the resistors, 1 mm of wire will have zero effect. Also OBD2 is very low amounts of data, speed would have little to no effect as well.

have you ever repaired a Midronics Gr8? i have one that won't see the clamps. its out dated tech but its a good power supply and battery tester if i can get it working again.

Is there any reason why acetone and a natural bristle brush would not be used to clean a board of flux residue? VOC's?

Acetone is able to dissolve or at least partially weaken the epoxide resin the board is made of.

@@Manu-nr1yt Yes exactly, plus you wouldn't want it getting inside connectors where there are plastic parts! Only some plastics are acetone safe.

@@JustInspiredKentI have been cleaning the soldered side of cb's with acetone, for years now, without any issues. I have it in a squeeze bottle with a small orifice, right next to my soldering iron. I've tried Flux-Off in a spray can, but it doesn't perform as well as acetone.

In this video (guesswork on my part), I believe he is measuring in diode mode between the USB pins and ground 0V. In the first instance it was OL, leading to the discovery of the broken track, The 0.41V reading is likely due to reading through the inductor and the transorb, either leading direct into a micro or a USB transceiver (proving that these are all intact, effectively measuring the semiconductor interface via the inductor).

I have a laptop that is in a dock for years. When I attempted to use the keyboard on the laptop, most of the keys didn't work. I didn't take it apart, but if it's not dust, what is it? Did it oxidise from lack of use?

No it's not a clone MDI 2 , the Chinese rework them on a green PCB only, secondly the MDI 2 clone is a mdi 1 internals reworked on to a mdi2 style PCB layout . With the MDI 1 CPU daughter board and compact flash WiFi adapter, neither of these are present when Alex is holding it up for reassembly to big boss.

As an electrical engineer, you should know that those are high speed length matched pairs. There is a reason they are routed like that, and not just a straight wire like you did.
