I did my flight training at PDK in 1988. It was a busy airport then. I can’t imagine what it’s like now. I just finished a complete restoration on my 1978 Grumman Tiger. Paint, plexiglass, interior, avionics, engine (added powerflo exhaust too), prop, you name it. She’s like a new plane. It was expensive but still a heckuva lot cheaper than a new C172 ! Tigers are great performers for their class and relatively economical to own. Keep up with the great Tiger vids !

Thanks for talking about the annual, and for the flight video. I remember going up in a Grumman 2 seater with a friend, back in the early 90s. Very cool plane. :)

Great info Krish, $10k is much more than a "normal" annual, but sounds like you got some big repairs completed for that price. If I remember you are in a partnership with a couple others so hopefully that makes the big repairs a bit easier to manage. Keep it flying!!!!

$10k is not an unusual cost for an annual It all depends on if the aircraft has been maintained properly for many years. No maintenance for 34 years? Expect a $25k annual! You CANNOT base the cost of a single annual on anything! It requires many years of history to have any relevance.

Could you post a summary of the expenses of the Annual? Parts, labor etc.. That would be more educational than just saying we replaced some things and it all added up to $10k.

Nice Tiger. I’m looking for one for family travel but I’ve never flown one. How’s the shoulder/elbow room? Is it comfortable for long flights (3 hr legs) with two in the front?
@AV8OR51
@AV8OR51 Год назад
I would think 3 hrs is probably the at the limit. I haven’t done many flights over 3 hours. I am sure that’s case for most airplanes in this category. I am not very big, so it works. I have had large people without too much trouble.

@@AV8OR51 Thanks, I got my first ride in a Cheetah when I was 9 and it seemed huge inside. I guess I’ll find out this weekend. I’m going to look at a tiger! The owner only flies a couple hours a year and he likes that I’m going take my family on a cross canada tour this summer. Hopefully, I can convince him to sell. If so, we’re going to fly a couple of 3 hour legs a day and fly coast to coast.

Hi Krish, any recommendation for a flight school in the local PDK area? Thanks
@AV8OR51
@AV8OR51 2 года назад
Hi Rudranath ji, I am familiar with Skybound and Aero Atlanta. Aero has new Cirrus aircraft while Skybound is more affordable. I often fly with instructors from Skybound as well. There is a flying club in Gwinnett county (LZU), if you want to go that route. I can find more information, let me know.

Would you purchase the Tiger if you had to do it again?
@AV8OR51
@AV8OR51 Год назад
Absolutely! Still a great airplane! I think when you own a 40 plus year old aircraft, things needs constant maintenance. Similar repair in a modern airplane such a Cirrus would be even more expensive.

@carlbandysr5058 Год назад
What do you know about wing spars needing to be replaced?
@AV8OR51
@AV8OR51 Год назад
@@carlbandysr5058 I remember we looked at that concern when we bought the plane. Can’t remember exactly now but it was either doesn’t apply to our plane based on the model year or the number hours before the replacement being upwards of 10,000 hrs or so

@flyer617

@@AV8OR51 The largest cost was due to a lot of worn bushings and struts in the landing gear. I have a retract and all three gear assemblies needed a complete rebuild. New bushings and other parts, all 3 struts rebuilt, brakes rebuilt (one was leaking). Then everything properly adjusted and tensioned. Then a cracked engine mount bracket needed replacing which took a lot of removing and reinstalling parts. Followed by a muffler with disintegrated flame cone. Flap roller bearings were all seized up; luckily they freed up when soaked in solvent. But that meant removing and reinstalling flaps. Then a lot of less major things. It better not cost me twice what you paid on my next annual or this will be unsustainable and I'll have to bail.
@AV8OR51
@AV8OR51 10 месяцев назад
Sorry about that! Hope it doesn’t cost way too much and more importantly, I hope your plane don’t go offline for too long!
@flyer617

@@AV8OR51 The winter season here in New England can be challenging to fly in due to icing. So I will have the annual done early, during that part of the season. I will push for it being done several months ahead of time even though it is not the best choice financially to have an 8 or 9 month annual. But only the first time as I will want to do that every year. It better not take 2 months again.
