Following Little Mister's journey, reminded me of a young colt that just didn't have the appropriate growth spurt once he passed the 6 month stage. The vet finally had a good look inside his mouth and discovered a molar with a crooked alignment. It wasn't enough to cause obvious bleeding, but just enough irritating his cheek that made him an unenthusiastic eater. The solution was some dental file work. We had to keep a close eye on things thereafter and the occasional touch-up with a file, when needed.

Thanks for including the Ile-De-France rams in your video. I imported IDF ewes and rams from Canada to Iowa 2 years ago. The sires of the rams in the auction came from the same woman most of mine came from. I started a RU-vid channel a month ago to show my stock that I raise. I liked watching Arnie in the fields with his older smaller equipment as I farm with older smaller equipment as well. Most farmers around me have big fancy equipment with autosteer. Thanks for all the great content you both provide for all of us to enjoy.

It depends. If I got triple for them, we'd make more. But to do our own private auction, which many people are doing these days, i think after time, work and expenses, we'd be no better off. However, if we had lots of Colonies here, which we don't have any, then it would be a no brainer. At that sale, one Colony bought 40 rams at close to $3000 a piece. That is fantastic for The Pound Maker sale!🙂

Live auctions are so stressful. When I was a kid, and even as an adult, buying sheep at sales was always so nerve-wracking--especially when there was one or two in the sale that you REALLY wanted. For me, the worst was when my second choice was earlier in the running order than my first choice. Major heart palpitations! Anxious to see the rams you bought. I'm curious... What did those rams have that you don't already have or constitutes an opportunity to improve your Dorsets (other than new genetics)?
@EwetopiaFarms
@EwetopiaFarms 4 месяца назад
Yes, inevitably your second choice goes first which really adds another level of stress to things that's why we usually always buy two if we can. Inbreeding is a big problem with our Dorsets now and the Dorset gene pool in Canada is much smaller than the Suffolks. And now that we've experienced the heavier set Dorset rams like Sheriff and Hamish, we don't want to go back to the taller, more tubey Dorsets which are more maternal. We love the terminal style sheep. So aside from both rams being unrelated to each other, they are also unrelated to ours and are nice deep bodied rams which are not so common in Ontario I find. Plus they have the more Dorset phenotypes we are looking for as well 🙂
@alisoncummins2726
@alisoncummins2726 4 месяца назад
Congratulations on your new rams! 67L has that big rammy nose you love and 97L has all that space between his legs. Very nice, both. Standing in the straw like that I can’t see their pasterns but I imagine you’ve gotten a good look. What’s the difference between how western sheep are raised vs Ontario sheep? You make it sound like the sheep at the national are all from hobby farms with individual troughs.
@EwetopiaFarms
@EwetopiaFarms 4 месяца назад
Western sheep tend to be working sheep so they are eating basic food like we feed, they are very hardy due to most living in harsher conditions than here, they are bred to be practical - good conformation, high capacity, good muscling, and raised in larger flocks so they are used to competing for food with other sheep. Our breeds in thus area tend to be more "showy" sheep, smaller flocks, more TMR fed, and especially with Dorsets, don't have the depth, length and width we are looking for and breed type as well. Now, that does not apply to all Ontario breeders but we are really specific in what we are looking for and I see lots of that out west on ranches.
@alisoncummins2726
@alisoncummins2726 4 месяца назад
@@EwetopiaFarms I think you said that out west they have larger flocks, like yours. Meaning Ontario flocks are very small? And not “working sheep”-they’re pets and for show?

It sure looks like you do not charge enough . I'm sure people wanting to buy your sheep would hate me for saying that because everybody's looking for a bargain but.... There is This Psychological thing in business that if you sell your Product At too much of a discount people automatically think of it as a lesser quality product that they will buy only at the lower price. I realize different styles of marketing, You target customer base also make prices different. I wonder if they get more at auction just because there's more people looking at them at one time. That's typically what you're hoping for at an auction If you're the seller. I'm sure it's kind of scary to sell at an auction though. You don't want your pride and joys going to just anybody if they might be treated bad.... Either way... You definitely do not have a lesser quality product!! ❤

I totally understand and agree with what you say. Unfortunately in our area, sheep farmers cringe when I mention $1000 let alone $2000! However, I truly do believe our rams are worth $2000+. But you also have to be able to move your product and we do sell lots of rams.
