(long version)
The ukiyo-e prints are known throughout the world. However, few people are familiar with how these prints were made. In this demonstration for foreign visitors, we are focusing on the printing stage in the making of woodblock prints.
Hokusai’s The Great Wave may resemble a painting, but is in fact a multicolor woodblock print. Ukiyo-e artists like Hokusai made sketches and handed them to a skilled carver to create the blocks used to print them. When the blocks were ready, they were taken to a printer, who used them to create multiple woodblock prints.
The accomplished craftsmanship of ukiyo-e woodblock prints continues to this day in Japan.
