I agree with your enthusiastic endorsement of the HH 52 cruising cat (not the racing version). It is magnificent. But I have to strenuously object to you comparing the helm station to Captain Kirk's chair. Other than an intercom so he could speak to the crew, Kirk had minimal or no operational controls at his station. Sulu was the pilot, Uruhu handled the radio, Spock handled radar, Scotty handled the engines and dingy (transporter) and someone, maybe Spock again, manned the machine guns (which next week I am having installed on my Hobie Cat). So, not a good comparison.

Nice review David, the HH52 is a spectacular boat! Keep in mind the hulls are not new tooling, it's the same as the old HH50, I love their marking idea to name it a 52 though to make people think they are getting more boat and not just 48' of waterline. Regardless, I love this boat too! So, when are you and Sylvia actually going to get out there and charter some boats and liveaboard for a week or two (or 10) at a time to start to understand what you really want out of a boat. Your reviews are entertaining, but you miss out on the commenting on the details that are the true pros and cons when comparing boats to one another. Get out there and go sail. If you don't start now, the dream isn't going to happen & I'm rooting for you and Sylvia to succeed!
@navalgazingatcampdavid
@navalgazingatcampdavid Год назад
Hi Kirk. Thanks again for commenting. Getting Sylvia onto a charter is still a step that needs some selling. Lol. Yup, that’s why this is a 5 yr project. I’m THAT far out. In the meantime, can you give me some guidance on the details that are the true pros and cons when comparing boats to one about. My approach and the items I compare has evolved significantly over the last year as I receive guidance and coaching from the audience, so if you can help me out, I would certainly appreciate it.

@@navalgazingatcampdavid So here is the thing, there is nothing wrong with your presenting the facts on these cats and providing your observations, it's great...but the issue is you don't know what you don't know. You have not spent one night at anchor, you haven't provisioned for 3 weeks and figured out where everything would go, you haven't sailed an overnight passage, or cooked dinner on passage in 3-4 meter seas, you've not walked forward on deck in heavy weather having to use all the hand holds and be tethered in, you haven't hung out in a secluded anchorage with all the toys, you've not lowered a dinghy into the water using the davit system, you haven't reefed a sail, flown a spinnaker, used a water maker, dodged container ships around hatteras, experienced sailing at 20+ knots, or the climbed into an engine compartment to troublshoot why the engine isnt starting. The list goes on and on and on. The things I see looking at all these boats (which are all fantastic by the way) is completely different that what you point out, it's not a bad thing, but you need desperately to get some real experience, as Captain Ron famously said "if it's going to happen, its going to happen out there!" My point is not to get you down, because I was in your exact spot back in 2014 when I caught the sailing bug. I've learned that what I thought I knew I didn't and what I thought was important really isn't. I learned all this and continue to do by learning. If you can't get Sylvia onboard now for a super comfy and fun charter in someplace easy like the Abacos or the BVI's you are just going to be bitter in a few years that all this effort dreaming and planning was for nothing. Hire a captain, get a really nice comfortable catamaran to go get a feel for what it is really like. Then go do it again, then take the ASA 114 weeklong training class as a couple...then go charter a 45' catamaran all by yourself. After you do, go re-watch a few of your videos and you'll see these boats in a completely different light. Sorry for rambling, I just see this journey not ending the way you want it to if you don't start doing some real sailing soon, and that would be a shame for both of you guys. Cheers!

@@kirkb3473 Thanks Kirk. I certainly need to do the charter thing with Sylvia! Totally agree and I have tacit approval. Lol. I have done a week’s formal training (live on board) on a 53’ trawler through the Gulf Islands and a week Royal Yachting Association training ( live on board) to Component Crew level again, around the gulf islands. In both cases I saw various weather conditions, the Pacific Northwest being what it is. Lol. Augmenting this limited exposure is a lifetime on lake boats in the BC interior. It’s far from passage-making experience or a background of live aboard but probably more that I represent on the channel. I AM looking forward to getting Sylvia on a charter and hope we will cross this important bridge in the next 18 months. Till then, the channel continues its prime function of chewing away at Sylvia’s resistance and engaging her friends in mush needed pier pressure. Lol. At least that is the evil plan.

@@navalgazingatcampdavid Sounds good and I wish you guys luck! Why don’t you just get a group of her friends with husbands to join you guys on a crewed charter. It’s not that expensive and this will expedite her willingness to get going sooner! Speaking of sooner, why in the heck are you waiting 6 more years before retiring? We are close to the same age and I just lost one of my best friends to cancer who had “planned” to retire this year at 55. Life has a funny way of changing when you make plans, so please don’t wait until you can afford a $2M boat before you start living the life you want 👍🏻

3-31-24 Re: Performance Cats an HH cruising cat.. Everything is cost vs effective value. The HH design team is at the forefront of carbon fiber innovation and HH management just won't use anything less than the best when it comes to its sails and all other components. No question they do make fast racing cats. Reportedly however Cats and Mono hulls in general spend about 98% of their time on anchorage. Nothing more enjoyable then drooping the hook in a smooth BVI cove and have other sailors dingy over for a Sundowner and maybe a movie. . HH knows this and that's why the 2024 Cat of the years is their all electric hybrid HH44OC. There is the in-depth factory video coverage of HH44OC hull#3 owned by Jason and Nikki Wynn who filmed the build process for their RU-vid Channe l "Gone with the Wynns", Its a very good look at what is probably the future of all hybrid electric cruising Catamarans. Their well built HH42OC can use its twin turning hydro propellers to generate electrical power for the battery bank while under sail.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I certainly share many of your points about HH, although I would not exalt it quite as highly as you might over others such as Balance, Windelo Outremer or Portofino. The electric wave is intriguing but a bit over hyped, in my opinion. From a true carbon footprint perspective, the mining and manufacturing of battery banks that big is brutal and, other than the MODX 70, they all still have diesel on board anyway. As you said, they spend 95-98% of their time at anchor so one might think that a Leopard, with its amazing multiple entering areas, is just the ticket. The great thing is that there is a burst of innovation across the cat and momohull markets that gives more choices than ever before. D

@@rumbepack Hi there. This is Seth from HH. As of May 2023, a similar spec'd Outremer 52 is $1.6m USD and a HH52-OC is $1.7m. Sure, if you add our EcoDrive and Carbon sails the HH52 becomes more expensive, but if you compare like for like offerings the HH52 is basically the same price. The pricing I have for the Outremer 55 is quite dated (as of October 2021 it was the same price as the Outremer 52 today!). My guess is the Outremer 55 is around ~$2.2m fully loaded today (same as a HH52-SC). Hope that all helps!

Dave. One might get the impression that you really like the hh52! You didn’t talk about the hybrid propulsion system. It’s only $! Not a consideration in your case? Agree with your Naval Gazing thoughts, like the hh44. Best of luck in your endeavors.
@navalgazingatcampdavid
@navalgazingatcampdavid Год назад
Hi Steve! Thanks so much for watching and especially for your note. Yup! I love this thing! It is soooooo beautiful in every way. Re the hybrid propulsion. I actually talk about that in an upcoming episode but in summary, the electric drive just doesn’t deliver enough benefit for me to consider it yet. Especially the parallel configuration which is not future-proof. With the series configuration like Windelo or VAAN, at least when the battery TEC makes an electric drive reasonable, you can simply swap battery banks. With the parallel system you have to do a total RE-power. Having said that, I would consider a series electrical drive IF it used articulating rim drives. This system would then give you: 1. Complete single handed docking maneuverability 2. Almost no maintenance costs. 3. Drastically reduced exposure to prop fowling 4. Enhanced efficiency …in addition to silent motoring, fantastic torque and the ability to generate your own “fuel”. That would be enough to push me over. The environmental angle is not as shiny as everyone thinks as the carbon footprint generated to produce 40 kWh batteries is far greater than that of just using diesel for the same purpose. So there you have it. Thanks again for watching!!! Tell your friends!! Lol.
