In this episode of our Newbie Tank Build series, Jimmy and Mark discuss entering the experienced reefer mindset. Join us as we share the rites of passage many reefers experience before considering themselves "experienced," including handling major water spills, tank meltdowns, and feeling ready to add more corals/hard corals.

Newbie here too! Love watching your series, it makes me realize I’m not alone in this. I started my first saltwater tank approximately 7 months ago….everything was going great until my last fish (#10) that I added in September had Marine Ich and wiped everyone out in 10 days (and it was QT’d and treated….or was “supposed” to have been, all of my fish were QT’d and treated. I paid a professional to do it yet this still happened). What took me 5 months to build, set up, time spent researching on how to strategically select fish, stocking order, and let’s not forget the money invested, was completely gone in 1 1/2 weeks, I was devastated to say the least, they were my pets….I had names for all of them 😢. I was inches away from quitting all together until my husband said, “just get rid of all of the rock and sand and start over”. When he gave me that green light, it was the spark I needed to take what was a very sad experience, learn from it, make changes based on the knowledge I’ve acquired so far, and rebuild my aquarium better than it was before. I can truly say I’ve learned a lot from this recent setback and feel that I can tackle anything….I may not be successful at everything, but I know I’m capable of pushing through. So maybe after this, I’m not quite as much of a Newbie anymore either! Thank you for this series, it’s fun to watch!

100% Not quitting will give you a tank that you can be proud of. When you first start its easy to have more lows than highs, if you over come them then you start having only highs and the occasional low.

Going into year 5 of reefing and 3 "serious bumps" later, and I don't think I'm experienced or advanced yet... I love and adore the scientific theories behind how tanks function. But I don't think I'd be comfortable calling myself "experienced" or "advanced"... I think I'll comfortably sit in the "intermediate" group for sometime. It's a fun exercise, and a well illustrated point: how that line is so very different, between different hobbiests

You need to get your nitrate @ 10-20 ppm and po4 0.03- 0.10 and try a 48 hour blackout ....could also help to have UV running but try without UV and you outta see it clear up

@@Sammy31Deethanks, I’ll give it a try. I do have UV, (aqua ultraviolet), but my nitrates are hard to keep up…I have to dose to get it up to 2. Feeding frozen twice a day.
