7:26 UPDATE from Dr HSU himself - _The Crossover in/out affects all incoming signals - speaker or line level. When set to out, the amplifier sends all input signals to the subwoofer, bypassing the built-in crossover. You can set the crossover frequency to 30 or 90, it does not affect the result. 100, 200 Hz would still be reproduced by the sub. You set the crossover to in, and dial in the frequency only when your controller does not have bass management - like in a two channel stereo system._
So happy HSU is getting the views they deserve. Bought a VTF-15H Mk.ii in 2017 for $899 and they are definitely still worth the $1300 tag in this day and age.
I have the older version of this for 15 years: VTF-3 MK5 HP Subwoofer. Now paired up with the Zu Dirty Weekend and NAD M10 V2. And when you call Hsu Research, Dr Hsu will pick up.
Hsu is the best. My first Hsu sub was a VTF-1 that I bought in 2007 and finally replaced it in 2022 with a ULS-15 MKII rosewood veneer, which is awesome.
I bought a HSU 10 inch sub 10 years ago simply because it was so low priced. I have been very pleasantly pleased and satisfied with it ever since. No one believes me that it's awesome because few have even heard of them. Musical and packs a punch. Easy to blend.
Finally Z gets around to my sub..... I have two of these and they are next level.... And super accurate.... Theyre an outer body experience.... Dr. HSU is a genius 💥💥💥
Same here. I had 2 of these in my dedicated basement Dolby Atmos theater with Paradigm Studio speakers and Parasound amps. Sounded fantastic 👏 Retired into a big 5th wheel RV and use 2 SVS SB3000 now. Really good, but damn I miss those HSU subs, especially for music !
I have stf2 subwoofer , bought the sub in 2012, it's still strong. Sound is plain amazing. Also usingthie HB1 mk2 bookshelf speakers. The sound amazing too
I have two of these in black paired up with 2 Klipsch RF 7 and center rc 64 from klipsch. powered with emotiva. In a 10 x 12 room after the first night cracked all 4 walls that had plaster on them. I spent the next few weeks redoing the room and now cranked up its truly the cheapest solution for my needs where when I need that bass ripping through my chest I get it and when I need to relax its clear as can be. I couldn't be more happy to be honest.
I had one of the original Hsu round 12 Inch subs from way back in 95/96. Just stopped working in 2016. Will be purchasing either 2 vtf 3 s or 2 Vtf 2 s. We will see. Hsu subs are solid products. You cant go wrong!
HSU subs are one of the best in the industry, I would say top 5 in the world. I love your videos man, spontaneous and funny at times. Keep it up! Cheers!
Im contemplating getting these for my studio to replace my dual SR 10's. Also I noticed this as a feature "For those who are worried about the size, it’s been designed to remain shorter than typical sofas so it can double as an end-table."
So, 32:15 says everything that needs saying. I already know I want this, just based on how you described the sound - I've always like that type of soft, liquidy bass. Tight bass is fine for some things, but when I want to just chill and enjoy something I like that softness. It just wraps around you and you can sink into it. So yeah, another thing to spend my money on, but this has to wait a bit as I have some serious things that need attention first. But yeah, that one sentence is the most important point - this is the one you'll have when you're not reviewing something else. ;)
T I bought this shortly after the MkII came out, so several years ago. I’ve been able to trim them to a variety of environments, but two really surprised me. First, I have a pair of Klipsch LaScalas (42” base horns) which really don’t need a sub; but hell, they pair well with the Hsu. That was for music. Then we retired, downsized, and I eked a home theater space from an enclosed sun room (ELAC 9.1.2 Unifi reference system). All those itty bitty speakers and the giant Hsu is more than up to the task. It comes closer to the theater experience than any others I’ve tried. Bonus tip: I set mine up as an end table (yes it’s the right height) at the side of a sofa. Turned out to be a great position too, and it makes a great wife pleasing table. I’ve learned that the crossover, Q control, phase control, port foams, volume can produce a wide variety of results and suit a side variety of needs. I’d love to justify a second one, but this shakes the whole house.
Been running nothing but HSU 15's since about 17 years ago. Sold my original 15H for the HSU 15 MK2. Sold my original for $700! These boxes of articulate dynamite are built like tanks and have the best bang for your buck sound and GODZILLA TACTILE feel that will crack your foundation in half and punch your entire body into vapor! Great review of the KAIJU of subs! Now i have to go repair my home from all of the damage my beautiful monster has done. (if you like to feel bullets and bombs then this sub will make you smile while it slowly turns your insides into goo, but you will die with an on your face. NO other sub can do that unless you spend thousands more.
Been using this sub for years with ML Montis electrostats, Once yu get the HSU dialed in i find the accuracy of the MLs mixed with the "sloppy" HSU really mixes well especially with music. Sadly only have 1 but definitely plan on getting a second down the road
I settled on getting 2 HT1508 Predators, the price was incredible at the time and they are super fast. I was super close at getting the Hsus. At some point you reach a certain level of quality and we are here!
HSU research was and is my first choice for home theater years ago! It's pronounced "sue" and formal pronunciation is "shoe" Research. It's the last name of the owner/designer.
Have had Hsu circular round tall tipsy water heater subs that started their company with the big external amp and crossover. It was great to see how much they spanked the competition for so little $$$ back in the day. I only ran one (most ran 2 of them) and it felt like the room was coming apart. Had a great experience with Dr Hsu getting replacement drivers as ups decided to damage the top heavy cat scratching tall cylinders. Great to see they still are great value for the $$$$. have always been what I would recommend for a good hit and music sub. Only other sub I want is a small rel for music and 2 channel. That is what rel is known for. Have a rel for music and Hsu for movies .
I ran 2 of those in my system for years and they're actually flat down to 16-17 hertz I bought them when they were 899 plus shipping and they are to this day some of my favorite subs I have dual rhythmic f18s that are monsters and I like them but you are right they have such a pleasing sound signature
That HSU looks really nice in NutRose. My setup, Running 2 SVS 12 pros sealed and 1 SVS 16 ultra ported in my theater. More bass then needed but it's very clean and has plenty of punch. The App is great and very handy. More subs really help with the feel of movies and concerts.
I have that sub in black paired with Polk RTAi9 towers in a 5.1 system. It's great for movies and music. You should hear Chris Stapleton's version of Tennessee Whiskey on the Hsu sub; it's awesome.
This subwoofer, along with it's VTF-3 MK5 'little brother', are the best bang-for-buck HT subwoofers on the market today. Period. And that's an objectively measured statement. Also, it's pronounced "shoe". But I still say H-S-U by habit.
I run mine with one port open. My only complaint is not being able to turn it more often up because my wife doesn’t like things rattling around upstairs. Great sub!
If you open both ports you will unleash HADES! I never run one port...I have a lot of room gain and 2 ports open give my body a better beating since it's in the 30 to 50hz.
I’ve had my VTF-3 MK5 for 6 years and it’s still awesome! It has to be the best sub for the money (around $800 when I bought it).. best bang for the buck!
Never thought an anime could be used to demonstrate bass information, but I'm intrigued... one day I will have a subwoofer, but apartment living is killing my dreams
I own four HSU subs, three are optimized with a MiniDSP together. Epic tight bass. Best value in subs. Hint: set your Q to 0.3 for the tightest bass and most headroom (vs 0.7 for most output).
Appreciate the review, glad you're not just saying this sub is this and that amazing, if anything it just solidified my stance on wanting a rythmik fv15hp or fv18 someday because I care more for refined accurate bass than absolute heft.
The sub wasn't calibrated correctly in the video. My VTF-15H has performed incredibly for the past 4+ years. Tight and accurate (no noticeable distortion).
@@waverunzzz I mean I think it's more about knowing my space. Absolutely nothing I said would change because of a room correction since the subwoofer is being corrected by the receiver. It is actually a good thing that I has a different sound than just a clean neutral subwoofer. That has the abilities that others subwoofers do not.
We've intentionally designed it to be shorter than most couches so it can double serve as an end table. Fun fact: you can also place the VTF-15H on its side and it'll perform the same in case you need some tetris-ing in your room.
@@Hsu-Research I have it on its side...I this Kevin or Dr. HSU? ha ha...thanks for your help along with your dad MANY years ago when I got my first 15.
Bought 2. I waited until Black Friday several years ago. No regrets. I chose HSU because all the reviews I read and watched agreed that the HSU had the most bass for the money. If I could afford more I’d go with JTR. If you have a limited budget HSU is a fantastic sub!! I disagree with Zeos, your budget for subs should be at least 3X greater than the rest of your system!
I cross-shopped Hsu and Rythmik at one point (the Hsu ULS-15 dual vs the Rythmik F18, to be specific). Ended up going with Rythmik for the sake of easier future upgrades and reduced floor space for now (and slightly higher low frequency performance), but I have no doubt that both were amazing choices.
Which was more accurate in your opinion? I recently bought Rythmiks, but I’ve never heard any other sub. I just heard rythmiks were very articulate and extended lower than most subs.
@@deankim6687 I never actually had a chance to listen to the Hsus, but I can say pretty certainly that the F18 is amazingly articulate in the deep bass. There's a certain scene in John Wick 2 (in the catacombs) that really shows off how good it is since you can feel the difference between each gun being fired. It's also worth noting that in my room with my AVR and my measurement mic, the single F18 was registering as flat to 5 Hz at - 20db.
plz re-review the HSU CCB 8's with your new better amps an listening spaces, I have a pair setup in a 7 foot triangle with the speakers crossed Infront of me so the right speaker fires over my left shoulder an the left speaker fires over my right shoulder, this make it so your are listening to the horns of axis by 15 degrees, this is how HSU intended the speakers to be listen to. By doing this an running them on a class A/b warmer amp you cut back on the harshness of the horns an get a sound stage an mid range that will rival any $2000 dollar pair of speakers, My amp is a Marantz pm8006, an my dac is a topping d30 pro.
Yep,. The CCB 8's do great at off axis sound, so they can sound great above or below a tv. For a time, I had mine mounted up 6 foot high on a shelf, think of them as Sport Utility Speakers that can handle unconventional placement.
I didn't want to buy 'Atmos speakers' so I just mounted normal bookshelf speakers on adjustable tv stands to the ceiling and pointed them at the couch, works pretty good
Hsu notes that the subs are designed to be end table height for WAF. How the hell do you put anything on the “table” without using Gorilla Glue? At least your drink stays adequately mixed!
I bought one of those pioneer Elite amps from the thrift store for like 20$ and I think it’s from 95 or 93 but it does not work but it way to beautiful to throw away so it became a shelf queen PS-I’m not a horder in don’t have a lot of stuff like this man 😂😂
Solid review. Glad HSU is getting more traction. I have the VTF2-MK5. Would you consider VTF-15H MK2 "end game" for its price point? What are its direct competitors?
@@ZReviews I bought mine directly from the good Dr. and he tried to convince me to get 2! A single one already failed the WAF and it knocks pictures off the wall when playing Miami Bass Wars! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JgxYvuNvr2I.html
Great review!!! Im in the market for a sub… to replace my PB SVS 1000 for my 18 x 24 room with big sliding glass window… The HSU is the winner over the PB3000???
@@ZReviews bro we could start a business where we make custom washer and dryer facades out of wood 🤣 many leather bound bottles of detergent, rich mahogany smells and all
More like Godzilla in a box. He treats baby Godzilla very tenderly but mess with his son...he will atomize you with his nuclear breath. That is HSU in a nutshell.
Want some real endgame system performance on the CHEAP? DIYSG Titans + 1 or 2 GSG Audio Full Marty subs (driver is dealers choice, you can go mid-bass or ULF focused). Couple weekends to build, but they simply cannot be beat without spending around $30-40k.
Klipsch RP-series look really good. They're huge, but no replacement for displacement. Just to mention another option for murderous subs. The RP1600SW... I'd be surprised if that didn't manage to do something as unlikely as shit on that Hsu.
Klipch? Really? You must be a young one...just like sex...you need more bass experience and listen to ALL of the subs...I did, but I started 17 years ago.
@@docwho10th88 Being an old fogey is no excuse for not knowing what's out there before you comment. 😉They spent years on the RP subs and it shows. Massive wattage, huge cabinets, redesigned slot port for less port chuffing, and stupendously long throw gigantic woofer elements that need support structure inside the sub just to carry the magnet. The 16 incher is a monster that can go toe to toe with stuff like SVS PB 16 Ultra for less money. Plus a 5 year warranty on all of it.
SVS are garbage Walmart subs...we used to do shootouts with 14 different subs and of course the Danley horn loaded monster almost the size of a piano, Orbit shifter and DIY subs ruled. When it came to the regular subs,,,,HSU, and Rhythmik had much better articulation than SVS . Another joke was the Earthquake sub...2000 watts in a tiny cube. That thing blew up when we pushed it lol..and no where near the SPL's that the big boys had. A total waster of $$$. Been doing HT for over 40 years...I have seen and heard more than I can remember. Ahhh yess the Captivator made the fellow reviewers the most violently sick during reference scenes and the HSU 15 made the room and couch shake the most with only a 300 watt amp! Klipsch was always worse than SVS...they never would make it past the first round, at least SVS would make it into the second round.
