Experiment with me as I test an Arduino controlled pressure sensor embedded inside a DIY inflatable of my own making.
I learn the basics of air pressure and sensor readings the hard way: failing. Failure is an important part of design and prototyping. Please enjoy my shame!

It doesn't work because it is a differential pressure sensor, if you put the whole thing IN the bag, the compared pressures are exactly the same, even if you hit it and it shows a reading difference, it is not operating correctly, you need a tube.
@BeckyMarshallDesign
@BeckyMarshallDesign 5 лет назад
I'm honestly not sure I follow - I understand why the compared pressures are the same, but I don't understand the tube. Do you mean a small tube fitted over the cylinder piece of the component? edit: also, thanks for the comment.
@greenspanfx
@greenspanfx 5 лет назад
Exactly, fitted over the cylinder piece... To be honest I'm not completely sure it is a differential pressure sensor. I just bought one of these, I want to use it on a pressure cooker at a certain distance and after a pressure gauge syphon, with a tube, I'll report back to tell if it worked. @@BeckyMarshallDesign

@@BeckyMarshallDesign Yes, you need a tube, and it is a differential pressure sensor, like Alexander Lang says in his blog and his shop where he sells his breakout board for this sensor. The sensor just arrived and i notice it has a hole beside the cylinder component, that is where it detects the "outside" pressure, in other words, the pressure that it compares with the pressure inside of the cylinder component.
@petermuller6923
@petermuller6923 5 лет назад
This is a differential pressure sensor. It has a small hole at the bottom and only measures the pressure difference to the air connector at the top. Otherwise, you could only measure the absolute athmospheric pressure, wich is useless in this case. You don't seem to be trying to measure the altitude over sea level of your lab ;) You want to measure the pressure of the inflatable relative to the ambient pressure, so you have to connect a tube to the air connnector at the top of the sensor and put that into the pillow or you need to use a t-connector at the output of the pump and connect the sensor there. Don't try to measure pressure while the compressor is running. Once in a while stop the compressor and wait for > 100 ms before measurements. The pressure oscilates massively due to the oscillating output of the compressor when it is running and for a short time after. I have built two complex machines using this approach and it works perfectly. I use the mpx5010dp (0-100 mBar) sensor for balloons and larger inflatables. It is not cheap (about USD 20) but measurements are very precise. You will need a sensor for higher pressures if inflating these small pillows so tight. MPX5050DP should be fine. It goes up to 50 kPa/500 mBar. You can calculate pressures in kPa or mBar with a very simple formula written in the data sheet.

I"m wondering if just the sensor tip should be inside the bag, and not it entirely inside. Maybe it needs a differential pressure to measure, putting it entirely inside there is no pressure diference.

Hi Becky, I spent hours try to get the little MPS20N0040D-D pressure sensor to work like you did. The problem is the "specs" on the internet are wrong. The OUT + is pin 4, not pin 3!!! If you try any of the examples on "The answer is 42" web site they won't work unless you use pin 4 instead of 3. Voila!

This video came up while searching Arduino air pressure projects. Interesting experiment and I like that you didn't cut out the mistake. We all have those moments. The sensor is most likely a differential/delta/relative sensor that needs to have a reference outside of the inflatable(may have an air hole or flexible membrane in the back of the sensor.) If it was an absolute sensor it should work inside the inflatable and give you a good reading. The down side of the absolute sensor is altitude compensation. Here in Colorado(5300 ft) my air pressure is ~12.5psi/84kpa and sea level is ~14.5psi/101kpa. That 2 psi difference could be enough for an inflatable to pop. Now you need a second sensor to measure the barometric pressure before airing up the inflatable. The best option is still the differential/relative sensor with a reference to the atmosphere(barometric) Note: the weather station barometric pressure is a altitude compensated value.

Nice video. Well, I've been working on making a water gun using 2 litre Soda bottle. The idea is to use the pump to fill the bottle up, once we get enough water take the input pipe (of the pump) off the water source and let the air fill the bottle hence building pressure in it. The output is the air compressor gun that throws out the pressurized water. I was looking to find a way to monitor or regulate the pressure in the bottle (don't want it to blow up). I wanted to stop the pump at certain pressure. Was very excited when I saw you using the same pump and doing exactly what I wanted. Will give your schematics a try, if I succeed, will let you know.

Hi, sorry not sure if anyone else has already commented on this, but that sensor is a differential sensor and you have put the both ends, measurement nozzle and the comparative atmospheric windows in the same space, which practically means that the gradient measured is 0, hence no reading.

Nice work. I’m curious to find out if you eventually get that sensor working. So I subscribed. :) I’ve been working on heat sealing polyethylene shapes for a few years. Seems like pretty useful thing to have a low pressure warning on some products, or the self-inflating feature you’re working on here. I haven’t made any videos yet but might do so someday.
@BeckyMarshallDesign
@BeckyMarshallDesign 6 лет назад
Derek, thanks for the comment! I've got a heat sealing experiment video coming up soon (spoiler: lots of fails!), and I'm dying to know what YOU know about it! I started making these videos because the info was not out there on the internet, and because I like to teach and mentor. I encourage you to document your experiments too! My ultimate learnings about the pressure sensor: air pressure changes when the volume of air exceeds the volume of its container. In an oxygen tank, we can increase air pressure without breaking the metal tank. But in a vinyl inflatable, not only will the container pop, but it will expand and stretch until the moment it pops. So the reading I experienced here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SSQb03E6DUo.htmlm30s is when you see the pressure sensor working. Essentially, I learned that the pressure sensor wasn't right for this particular project, and if I wanted to monitor air loss, I'd have to find another way.
@webderek
@webderek 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply. Btw, before I forget again: I found your video by searching for “diy inflatable”. I inflate my creations with hand pumps, one of which I bought from a kitesurfing store and it has a pressure gauge on it. Most inflatable kitessurfing kites are inflated to 7-8 lbs per sq. inch. My inflatables can only handle 1-2 lbs per sq. inch. Now that I think about it I didn’t look at the units on the guage. Maybe it’s lbs per sq. ft. I’ll check.
@webderek
@webderek 6 лет назад
The units are psi.
@webderek
@webderek 6 лет назад
When I inflated my shapes to 2 psi the 4 mil polyethylene (PE) sheeting I used started to bulge and distort. This stretchiness severely limits how much weight an inflated PE tube can support. However, there are still applications for low pressure inflated PE cylinders, such as kites or other toys. I was thinking it would be nice to have a wireless pressure loss indicator on my kitesurfing kite that would let me know if it had a slow leak. That was one reason I was interested in your pressure sensor experiment. I wish I had time to pursue the idea, maybe someday...
@webderek
@webderek 6 лет назад
I think one of the reasons that there is not a lot of information out there on making inflatable‘s is that there is a lot of potential for patenting new ways of making them. Also, people who have an interest in creating inflatable‘s commercially may avoid patenting their techniques or tools, because they prefer to keep them as a trade secret. I am in the process of doing a patent search to see if the things I’ve created are already patented. If it’s not, I’ll apply for a patent and make and post videos of how to build them. If it’s already patented, I’ll then be able to make and post videos sooner. It’s super fun to make a breakthrough and I’m itching to share the discoveries I’ve made. Especially since I’ve benefitted from other people posting their discoveries.

Hello, Everything was good except for one small point that caused incorrect results. The sensor needs two different air pressures to measure pressure. One is the reference air pressure, where the sensor is located and against which it measures the secondary air pressure. The second is the secondary air pressure, which differs from the reference air pressure, and we intend to measure this difference with the sensor. For the sensor to function correctly, the sensor body must be outside the measurement location, where we have the reference air pressure. The air pressure we want to measure should be directly connected to the sensor's tube interface so that the sensor can read the pressure difference between these two areas. When the entire sensor is inside the chamber, there is no reference pressure to differ from the secondary pressure, and the sensor will have no output regardless of how high the internal pressure rises because there is no pressure difference.

Hello, nice work dear, but for the sensor to work we need to put it out side the bag and only connect a little tube inside the bag. this is because that pessure sensor has a little cavity in the bottom for mesuring the amount of distance in a very little diafragm.
@jerryocrow1
@jerryocrow1 5 лет назад
Instead of a bag, try a blood pressure bulb with hose onto nipple of little tube. But, this might be two extreme as to up and down. You might "T" into a bag. Then, squeeze bulb to raise pressure into tube/sensor/bag. Read results. Release bupb knob to release seal which allows air out which lowers pressure which is read and reported. Science is trial and error. Mostly error..

I got a suggestion just to check it out I guess u may have to place sensor to a rigid area where the force of air acts only one one side of sensor may be (Top) as the sensor is just placed inside the transparent bag kind of pressure is acting equally at all sides so the forces are nullified and no much difference in reading is seen..... pressure is as same as force...if we want to calculate we have to fix the base of sensor to rigid surface and force has to be applied from opposite side. ..Give a try ....might help you Thanks 😊
